That is, the dusk appearance sensed by the pilot's eyes near sundown is about 1/2 hour later than the actual time. Try Todd's Canopies, in Ft Lauderdale. 954-579-0874. He's easy to wor k with, and turnaround time is good. My first canopy was $350, modifie d for taller people, 1/8th thick and tinted. My second was a thinner ( lighter) canopy he's making for the European market, where they're mor e weight conscious. They ran considerably less, and if you can stand a minor optical flaw, he may have some real bargains. But shipping is a bear. Back in June of 2006, it was $48, in Feb of 07, it was $117. Canopy #2, the unmodified, dropped right in. Don't ask me how I know a bout replacement canopies. He'll also mark front and back. (In my case a 4" grinder). With one guy to help steady it, it was an absolute breeze. Noisy, but easy. Cut both sides to accommodate my side rails and locks in less than an hour. It seems to be a wonderful short field airplane which is good because I have a very short field that I want to fly out of. The runway is 800 feet long. Is it realistic to expect to operate off this runway? I might add that the approaches are excellent from one direction but not so good from the other where I have to come in over a building which itself is setting on ground higher than the runway, so I would be high (30ft) over the fence. I painted comercial vehicles for about 15 years with at least 10 of them with catalized polyurethanes and urethanes. I suspect that the wrinkling in the paint is actually a fault of the primer used or the surface preperation rather than a failure of the paint. If there is any way for your gas to get thru the paint surface and down to the primer or metal surface it will soften or destroy the primer bond, the same will happen between the primer and metal surface if the metal is not prepped perfectly. Around the filler is the perfect place for this to happen because there are edges of aluminum, and rivets in close proximity. This area holds moisture, and contaminates when you clean, and etch and alodine, and then as you say the gas works on this area after the plane is completed. On comercial trucks I have seen a paint job which still looks good(good, not great) after 25 years using Ditzler Durethane, But I have also seen paint jobs which had the wrong primer, or poor surface preperation which after a month they started to chip and when you got under an edge you could peel paint off in pieces measured in square feet. Without knowing the exact process and materials used it is hard to tell the cause, but my opinion is that the polyurethanes are exceptionally durable and will stand up to almost anything short of really good paint stripper. The down side to them is that continued exposure will eventually end your life. I wouldn't do my fly off hours at home. I have two runways, one is 1300 ft with 150 ft high power lines about 400' from the approach end and fairly tall trees at the other end, and another one that is about 800 ft with a lower power line about 30 ft high. I fly my 701 with a 100HP Rotax out of an 800 FT strip at 6500 in the Southern Sierra Mountains of California. Take offs are the most fun. I have 1300 Ft from where I start to the first 75FT pine tree and I usually get about 75FT of clearance. Landings are interesting also, you come in over the pines throttle back and sink like a rock. Then just before touch down add a little throttle and smooth it out to a soft touch down. It only takes around 175FT to stop in a very relaxed manner. So far Ive never gone past the half way point. I do not know of many airplanes with that kind of performance. Good luck on you future project. I flew mostly in the desert near Mohave but also all over the central valley and central coast near Monterey. For flying it can't be beat. I was just looking at the "bad" approach on my purposed runway and with a little "S" curve on final I can get the wheels down very near the beginning of the runway, I would say about 100 ft in. Does the 701 really stall at 28 kts (or mph?) when light. That seems impossible. My last plane was a Tailwind that would drop like a set of keys below 80 mph. How slow is slow flight? I am really looking forward to Sun N Fun to see the plane and meet some of you all. It is best to locate them with the attach brackets that are behind the firewall and attached to longerons. It would be best to drill pilot holes in the center of the face of the brackets, locate the brackets, then drill the holes in the firewall. After way too long (we're talking years) I finally finished an outboard wing! It's good to make some progress. Now the bad news, and a request (along with an excuse). I built my ailerons several years ago following the hand-drawn plans available at the time. Even with kit parts, it seems I managed to screw them up. I misread the plans and matched the inboard end rib of the aileron (where the aileron crank attaches) to the inboard wing rib rather than just following the "line" of the wing rib. So, when I recently fit it to the completed wing, I cut it the aileron too short on the inboard side. Rather than being past the end of the rear zee, I cut it at the inboard rib. (OUCH!). There goes about $200 worth of parts. While I lick those wounds, I'm going to trudge forward with the left wing while I save my pennies. Does anyone have a good photo of the clearance required between the aileron and the rear zee, on the inboard side of an HDS? I want to make sure when I get to the left one I don't make the same mistake. Also, I already know the left aileron ribs are in the "wrong" location but I can still cut the aileron to the right length. Basically, the aileron rivet lines will not line up with the wing ribs (they'll shift 4 or 5 inches inboard), and the larger gap will be on the outboard edge, rather than inboard. I've got that question into ZAC, but any thoughts here rather than cosmetically if there would be any concerns with that? Listers - how does one go about finding the center of the firewall? My firewall came with two tooling holes pre-drilled. I could obviously just draw a line between them. But, when I stick my square on the bottom edge, the holes are not perfectly aligned - the top hole is approximately 1-1.5mmoff the line if I center the lower hole. The flanged bottom edge is not a perfect line itself, so I'm not sure it is the best place to square, but there are no other options. Also, in terms of side-to-side measurement, the darn thing is curved so it is tough to simply measure a centerline that way. I'm sure I'm being dumb, but suggestions appreciated!
