As this discussion continues, I must interject how much I disliked the Cortec. I found it to be very easy to apply, but crappy thereafter. It was sticky and held aluminum chips/shavings in tight places. It liked to peel, like Elmer's glue - especially when two pieces rubbed together (like when you move the wing skin around on the ribs). It also sucks to mark on with a sharpie afterwards. I will admit that when I went back to mess with one part about a year later, the stuff had dried much better and held to the part better. But, that was literally a year later. I am now using the Dupli-Color self-etching primer that you get at auto stores. I have to go outside or in the garage to spray (with a regular mask), but it is so much easier and nicer! Has anyone tried the VW conversions? Great Plains has a couple of 100 hp versions. I know the Rotax 912 is popular but I have not heard anything about the competition. How about 80 hp vs 100 hp? Are most older 701 80 hp? Jerry

Im using Cortec also and Ive experienced the problems stated by Michael bellow however, there are ways to mitigate this. I typically roughen the surface with scotchbrite and clean it well before applying, then I let it dry for 24 hours and this avoid the problem of peeling out. To remove chips/shavings of metal stick in the aluminum I use a cloth slightly damped with denatured alcohol for open spaces and a brush for the tight places, this un-stick the chips and after that I vacuum them out of the assembly. Even with this inconveniences, I thing Cortec is still easier to apply than any other method. What I dont know is if it provide equal protection in the long run . Gerry, The ZAC website lists a lot of custom engine installations. I chose the Jabiru 2200 because its a standard installation and within the 100 hp and 200 lbs installed weight limitations for the rev-4 and later 701. Earlier models are limited to 130 lbs. (they can go over this but will no longer comply with TP 10141e design standards) there has been one VW with redrive installed North of me, but last I heard they were having overheating issues. Because the 701 flys slow, the cooling flow available is limited. There is a Corvair installation South of me but the engine is up for sale and being replaced with a Jabiru. I dont know the reason but heating and weight would be likely. Most others here are 912 or 912s. The 912s is not so popular as they shake things to bits, that may have improved now with the new ring mount frame. Almost the same performance can be had from the Rotax 582 or Simminoni Victor. John, I asked Cortec a similar question because I wanted to paint over some of it inside the cabin area. This was their response: Gordon You can apply any acrylic coating as a top coat to VpCI 373. This would include most products that you find at local hardware stores. You can also apply virtually and urethane coating. If there is a specific coating that you would like to apply, please let me know and I can advise about compatibility. All- As you know, sometimes you save time by taking sthe time to research. I don't think this was a stupid question, and I think it's one that anyone considering a Corvair install should think about before punching holes in a hard to replace firewall. Thanks to all for your input. Unlike the cattycorner brace question, there is a definitive answer to this one, and now it's in the archives for future builders to refer to. It took me a week to get an answer to my question, probably because I didn't communicate exactly what I was looking for well. Now do all you listers see the need for a place you can go to get definitive answers to questions that have been puzzling builders since Moses was the foreman at Zenith? Thanks Ralph, I have spent most of today on the internet looking at engines. Like most everyone, I like small engines that pump out a lot of power. If only the AeroVee was 100hp...... But, I am such a beginner here. All I want is enough power to get out of my pasture (800 ft runway). If 80 hp would do it, that is what I would go for.
