Les,
I'm at the same juncture as you. After obtaining advice from my tech counselor
and others on this forum, I've decided to go with an electric flap system. I've
purchased Bob Nuckoll's 'Aeroelectic Connection' for assistance in wiring.
Also, someone on this forum suggested the following site for linear actuators:
http://www.surpluscenter.com/sort.asp?UID 07042010494297&catname=electric&keyword=EALD
Although installing an electric flap system will obviously cause a weight penalty,
I think it will be a superior system to any manual flap system. That's my
two cents. Good luck.
Blue side up,
Dan Ginty

Dan,
The entire Liberty Field Flyers club plans to attend this event in
Cloverdale on May 5th.
The Liberty Field Flyers consist of about 25 UL and LS flyers who currently
fly out of Petaluma Ca. This event has been very good in prior years.
Michael Heintz, who operates Quality Sport Planes, and sponsors the Fly-in,
has been a real help to those of us who build airplanes. He has demos of
aluminum construction set up at the fly-in. We (Liberty Field Flyers club)
run the all-you-can eat BBQ concession ($5).
I know that several Challenger will be at the fly-in. My CHII-LW is one of
them. I have a special interest in going because I am building a Zenith
CH701 STOL plane (Quality Sport is the West Coast US arm of Zenith
Aircraft). Our group has 3 members with CH701 projects or completed planes.
The 701 is a perfect LSA upgrade for a LS Challenger owner like myself who
want a little more speed and a lot more range and carrying capacity, but
still wants very mild stalls in the 30 MPH range and doesn't want to pay to
much.
If you are interested in the Fly-in, see

See you in Cloverdale,

We've never driven the coast, so we thought it would provide a good opportunity.

We look forward to meeting everyone down there.
I guess I should ask.. Would there be any interest in me bringing down a Dynon

What is the advantage of electric flaps over manual? I can imagine the
flaps might be slightly more difficult to deploy at higher speeds without
electric, but other than that, what's the deal? I kind of like the idea
that you don't need electricity for manual flaps, especially since I know
what it's like to have a complete electrical system failure at night.

Subject: | 601XL manual flaps? |
I went and searched through the archives looking for data on the manual flaps installed
on
the prototype XL. I found nothing useful. Does anyone know why they were abandoned?
I have a strong preferrence for the manual and had been thinking of solutions
when I saw the image of the detent quadrant and handle on the web.
Has anyone asked Zenith about it? What did they say (in as much detail as possible).
Thank you!

List Members.
There has been some talk of an easy way to change the Dwyer pressure gage face
to better suit the LRI that some of us a installing.
This is what I came up with. Below is a picture of the finished gage and the vinyl
overlay I used to put over the top of the factory face.
It took a little practice to get it positioned right but it came out good.
I had to have a sheet of 16 printed out and have some extras, if anyone is interested.
The first sheet was a little expensive, but now that the art work is
done additional sheets won't be as much. They cost me about $4.00 ea.
Let me know off list.

Sorry all could not make it to Sun N Fun. We had a wonderful time. Wish everyone
could make it next year. This was my first time at Sun N Fun and I learned
a lot about building at the different sessions each day. The quality of each
class is great for learning. I think The wife and I made 14 different classes
and each was well planned and presented in a usuable way. Hope next year
all zenith folks will be there. Besides it is just a lot of fun.
We will be leaving in the morning heading toward Millsap, Tx. Hope to get
there sometime sunday nite.

Subject: | 601XL Manual flaps? |
Do not archive
I have no info on the prototype manual flaps. However, when in doubt,
plagiarize. I dug out my old Thorp T-18 drawings and have been thinking of ways
to
adapt these manual flap controls to the 601XL if needed. Advantages are a full
40 deg travel, fast up/down and the T-18 also uses flaps for roll trim. Does
this by a threaded knob aft of the flap handle that individually adjusts the
flap "up" stops. Cute. John Thorp also designed the PA-28 Cherokee and it shows.
I looked at this when a builder posted that he could not rig more than 20 deg
down. That in turn spawned msgs about retro rockets, speed brakes and drag
chutes. I need at least 30 but I want more than 35 deg. I'm buying some land for
a small farm strip and don't want to change projects in order to use it. It
will be a while before I'm rigging flaps. Hopefully I can stick to the design.
Wife likes electric's. I used to fly Bird-dogs with 60 deg electric flaps
(retrofitted in the 50's/60's). Its ugly if you need to do a full flap go around.
It takes forever for electric flaps to creep up from 60 deg to less than 40.
Manual flaps, before my time were a better deal. I don't want to start
anything, but I cant get the idea of about 7 deg of reflex flaps out of my head.
(Like
a Maule.) Forget I said that.

Subject: | Zenith Gathering |
Attention all Zenith builders, friends, and other interested people:
Recently there have been several mentions of organizing Zenith
gatherings in the Zenith Newsletter and on the Matronics Zenith email list.
Here in the United States Mid-Atlantic area (NC, VA, WVA, MD, PA, NJ, DE) we
have a lot of Zenith enthusiasts. I have always wanted to find a way to
bring together more than the few Zenith/Zenair planes I might see at Oshkosh
or Sun-N-Fun. Informal gatherings at Sentimental Journey in Lock Haven
Pennsylvania have been just a taste of what I'd like to see. With that in
mind, I have contacted the local EAA National Capital Chapter 186 in the
Virginia suburbs of Washington DC about having a Zenith event in conjunction
with and as part of their Fall Flyin and Cruisin. With lots of details
still to work out, the Chapter has endorsed the idea. It will be an event
within an event. As part of the EAA event, we will be able to utilize the
EAA flyin facilities. A pancake breakfast, lunch trailer, car show, Young
Eagles, necessary facilities, and other activities are all traditional
aspects of the Winchester flyin. This year, a Berlin Airlift C-54 will be
part of the Flyin. I envision a large Zenith/Zenair tent with plenty of
room for hangar flying, maybe a building display or demonstration, whatever
literature and goods I can gather, and a continuous video show like that
seen at the Builder's Dinner at Robbin's in Oshkosh. Next to it we will
have a reserved space high on the airport grounds to tie down and show off
whatever number of Zenith aircraft I can entice to fly in. And we will
have an eating event! I have some seed money already available for the
event. This will be a social and educational aviation event and a chance to
have a good time with others interested in Zenith aircraft.
The EAA Chapter 186 Fall Flyin is held at the Winchester,
Virginia Regional airport (OKV). OKV is located just west of Washington DC
outside of the Class B airspace, away from Camp David, and outside the Air
Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). The Winchester airport is just off
Interstate 81 at Route 50 for those that are driving. Plenty of hotels are
available for those that would like to stay overnight. The area itself is a
tourist destination for the Apple Festival, numerous nearby natural caverns,
Skyline Drive, the Charlestown Race Track, historic Harper's Ferry, civil
war battlefields, Sky Bryce Resort, and other attractions. Flying in the
area exposes a bonanza of exciting scenery. The Flyin will be held
September 22 and 23 this year giving me time to organize and for you to make
plans.
I would like to gauge the level of interest and in particular,
get an idea of who might fly their Zenith's in. All I need to go ahead is
an indication of a significant level of interest to make the effort
worthwhile. Please send a short email to me either on the Zenith list or
direct to zenithgathering@earthlink.net. If enough people want to
participate, I'll make this event happen. I'll send out the results in a
week or so.
Please let me know of any additional ideas or questions or
comments you may have about the gathering.

Simply put, I don't care for the location of the flap control handle. It seems
to be in an awkward place. A simple flap control switch located on the panel
makes a bit more sense to me. Regarding an electrical failure, I don't think
losing your flaps on this airplane is a major issue since it can easily land
anywhere flaps up.

hi everyone,
can anyone provide an actual measurement of a 701 with the folding wings. i just
started my kit and am building a (garage/hangar) by my house for it, but
i can't find a measurment with the wings folded. zeniths' website shows the wings
folded parallel to the ground while in photos i've seen they look higher
than the rudder? length and width won't be an issue; however, the height is critcal.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!! Thanks in advance! john m.

I would like to see your Dynon panel. I bought a Dynon unit but have not
installed it yet, so a little demo would be great. I know Quality Sport has
room for your display, but you should check with Michael Heintz to make
certain its OK. You can call Michael at 707 546-6272.

I agree that electric flaps could be an unnecessary complication and adds
weight. Keep it simple and less can go wrong. However, I have been told that
lowering the flaps can be difficult without some addition mechanical
advantage when you are near the top of the allowed speed for lowering them.

Les,
I'm at the same juncture as you. After obtaining advice from my tech
counselor and others on this forum, I've decided to go with an electric flap
system. I've purchased Bob Nuckoll's 'Aeroelectic Connection' for
assistance in wiring. Also, someone on this forum suggested the following
site for linear actuators:

Although installing an electric flap system will obviously cause a weight
penalty, I think it will be a superior system to any manual flap system.
That's my two cents. Good luck.
