I have finished the rear end and one wing and I am half way through the second. I having been thinking hard about which engine to use. Seeing as I am in Australia I am leaning towards the Jabiru. I like the extra power and the inherent smoothness a six cylinder would give so I am thinking about the 3300. Has anyone fitted one of these engines in a 701 and if so do you have any advice or performance figures, cruise, fuel consumption etc? Does it have to much power for a 701? Any other thoughts on engine selection would be appreciated. I own a 160 cm dia prop from HOFFMANN which I intend to bolt to the business end of my HDS one day. It is mechanically operated and has 3 pitch settings: 1. Take off, 2. Cruise, 3. feather (sailplane operation). It originates from a Grob G109B touring motorglider and was swung by a 2500ccm VW based engine rated 85hp. the G109B was introduced in 1983 (and sold in considerable numbers to the British RAF as trainer) so this is not new at all. From: "steveadams" I'm not a painter either, but here are a couple of tips that may save a bit of work. 1. You can probably skip the Lacquer thinner cleaning on aluminum surfaces. I did the same initially, but then discovered that the sharpie marks are removed completely by the alumiprep/scotchbrite. One less step and less chemicals to deal with. 2. Use the scotchbrite pads when cleaning with dishwashing soap and alumiprep. It will clean up faster and scuff up the surface nicely. You won't need the additional step of going back and scuffing up the surface. I won't get into what color of scotchbrite to use. 3. An engine hoist makes a great mobile, adjustable hanger for the parts for cleaning, drying, and painting. Parts will still swing around a bit, but you can keep the lines short to minimize movement and adjust the height of the boom to put the part where you want it. That's the extent of my knowledge for what it is worth. I also like the idea of a non-electrical system for the flaps. But why would a screw design be needed. I have flown Cessna's and Pipers with manual flaps and they all had a parking brake like lever. Is the force needed to extend the flaps on a light XL so much larger than on these heavier planes I would think a screw design would make it impossible to quickly retract the flaps if needed. You'd get more climb and faster descent, but not much improved cruise. There are several engines that wouldn't impose problems that go with the excessive horsepower. The stress on your firewall and mount don't have to be that high. I'd advise you look just a bit longer at the problem. It can be done, but I see the 3300 as a mismatch for the 701. As I've put my 701 on amphibs over a year ago I do not need the gear I removed. This includes the wheels and main gear and nose gear. Only have about 90 hours on them. Recent inquiries require a second response to what I found. The wrinkled paint was easy to remove, but the spots that weren't took a lot of sanding to feather edges. I primed and used a micro roller for finish coat, as most of it was under the bottom wing joint cover. It was then sanded and second coated to finish. A polish rub out would blend it to the rest of the paint, but I dont think Ill take it that far. Im comfortable with the durability of current water borne urethane processes, but Bingelis was absolutely right about good brand name acrylic enamels being much less work and much less costly for the amateur builder. Im pleased to see some builders here showing very fine work with that paint and process. From: "Gig Giacona" While I have no interest in manual flaps in my XL I don't see why it would be that complex to replace the electric motor with a parking brake type system. The only reason I can see why anyone would do it is to not have to worry about the electric motor failing and I don't worry about it. There are plenty of folks that are flying the XL and NOT using the flaps. Not to mention all the 601s previous to the XL that didn't even have flaps. I like manual flaps over electrics for these reasons: Manuals weigh less, Manuals don't have to be monitored during operation to get a predetermined position. Manuals are less prone to malfunction. Manuals can be operated during an electrical failure. Manuals require lower total electrical power. Manuals give you tactile feed back if you inadvertently try to deploy them at too high an airspeed. Manuals don't require a multimeter to troubleshoot, only a flashlight. Manuals retract fast. You could salvage most of this from an old Toyota. My wife likes the effortless operation of electrics and that is a consideration. I have all the parts in the garage. She also likes the operation of the hydraulic flaps in the Mooney Mark 21. You just put the lever down, then pump another lever three or four times to pump them down. Lift the first lever and they smoothly retract. These would be too hard to adapt though.
