Eddie, The wings are not swept forward. Scott Laughlin just did his wing attach
last weekend. He had the same question. What you're seeing is the result
of the wing spar being tilted back. Lay a straight edge along the spar (up between
the wing and fuse--with the wing attached to the fuse). If you run a string
from wing tip to wing tip, the straight edge should hit the string dead
nuts. So,,,,,the rivet line is straight as a string --wing tip to wing tip if
you "tip" your viewing angle the same number of degrees the spar is tilted back.
Hope this helps.

Subject: | CH701 Rudder Tip Beacon/Strobe |
I am nearly finished my rudder and am struggling with the choice of beacon or strobe
to mount on the rudder tip. Zenith has told me how to reinforce the tip
rib if I do so but I cannot seem to find a "real" aircraft beacon that will fit
in the small space on the front of the rudder tip rib.
Anyone have any ideas of choices for a rudder beacon for the 701? Red strobe would
be good or flashing red LED. I've looked at Aeroflash and Whelen and I'm
just looking for other possible options.

The way I understand the geometry and the way I did it:
The rivet line of the main spar will fall beneath a tip to tip string only
when the main spar is vertical.
If you lower the tail until the wing spar is vertical, the main spar rivet
line is directly beneath the tip to tip string. The wings are in the
required position.
After rotating the aircraft to level the dihedral of the wings sweeps the
tips forward.
In this position, the main spar rivet line is behind the string at mid wing
span.

Hey Jerry:
Care to tell us the price of such nice hole saws? If you use
flanging dies, hole diameter is not critical, but what is critical is
after you cut the holes with any tool, be sure to sand around the inside
of the hole until it is smooth enough to run your finger around inside
and feel NOTHING. If you leave ANY nick etc., the flange can easily
crack while forming. How do I know this? From "experience". And a
fly-cutter works fine with the right setup in a drill press.

A few days ago someone suggested using a fly cutter rather than investing in multiple
hole saws. The choice is a personal preference of course but I thought
I'd offer a hint in favor of using a fly cutter.
When you have completed the adjustment and the cut you will have a circle of waste
material with the 1/4" pilot hole in its center. My advice is to store those
in a box somewhere handy. You might want to identify them with a fine Sharpie.
Later on, if you have to find the center of the large hole you just cut out,
the waste material will make it much easier to do that. For instance you might
be using a finished piece as the layout pattern for another piece. In that
situation, being able to set the waste piece centered in the hole is very helpful
in locating the center pilot hole for the next piece.
That doesn't work as well with a holesaw because the kerf of the holesaw removes
more material making repositioning more difficult.

Subject: | Re: Metric hole saws |
I just took a look at the Morse web site and they make several models of
hole saws. If you go this route, I would definitely recommend the fixed
arbor model. The style that uses the detachable arbor allows the saw to
rattle unless screwed down tight on the threaded arbor, where the drive pins
usually don't line up. These saws are made to go through lumber quick. I
believe their teeth may be too course for thin sheet metal. I would do test
holes before using on a valuable part and would try for the most rigid setup
possible in a drill press.

Alex--
You can check out both Stratomaster and Dynon. I'm running the Dynon on my
601XL and am hapy with it. Or if you are looking for a stand alone unit,
I've used a Navman 2100 for the last few years in a kitfox. You can check
out this link:
http://www.discount-marine.co.nz/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=130&products_id=3031
If you shop around you might be able to get it for a little less. I think I
paid about $95 3 years ago.
The installation is very straight forward and the calibration can be
completed with a few tank fulls.

Subject: | Lightening Hole Tolerance |
Regarding the acceptable tolerance of lightening holes, it would seem to
me that the important thing would be to not oversize them, and to have
the centers properly aligned. If they are too small there is a weight
penalty, but not a structural one, I would think.
As pointed out there is a lot of room for imprecision when using a stick
with a slot in it for flanging.

I'm very happy with the fuel flow gauge/function in my Grand Rapids Technologies
Engine Information System. The accuracy was very close with the initial calibration
and is spot on after a small adjustment.
Most (all?) the fuel flow gauges use the same FloScan sender. I've read that it
is important to have six inch straight lengths before and after the sender. Also
recommend to have the sender after filter, pumps and to have fuel flow "up
hill" slightly after leaving the sensor.
On cross country flights where I want to maximize the range I run one or two tanks
dry and know to within a few minutes of when a tank will be empty.
(N601RT has two 11 gallon leading edge tanks and a 7.5 gallon right side wing locker
tank)

It seems few people buy the exact prop they need as the purpose changes
depending on where they go.
I'd recommend the Warp because very minor adjustments yield considerable
performance differences
between climb and cruise. Short landing and takeoffs etc. The fixed
prop is not a way I'd want to go.
I don't think there's any reason to try to guess on this one.

I've not used any of the fuel senders mentioned. However, a Navman
transducer was use in a VariEze that caught fire in flight, resulting a
fatal crash in Canada. See:
http://www.cozybuilders.org/Glenn_Saunders/Use_Of_Non-Aircraft_Parts.pdf
The Navman manufacturer stated that the unit was for marine use, not
aviation use. Evidence is inconclusive. However, I'd recommend that any
builder read the report before installing the Navman in an aircraft.

Interesting reading. Let's see if I have this straight.
The engine installation, which was the first time that engine was installed in
that airframe, was flying illegally and somebody wants to blame the fuel flow
sensor because that was pretty much the only piece of the wreckage they could
identify.

I probably should have mentioned that the transducer for the Navman I used
in my Kitfox was/is mounted in the cockpit and suspended to relieve any
stress on the unit ends---not in the engine compartment for the above
indicated reason.
