Michael;
I believe that the gear at ACS is 2 piece. This would be a redesign for the adventuresome,
with complicated bending and load transfer considerations.
Michael Valentine <mgvalentine@gmail.com> wrote: Going through the archives, there
still seems to be very little about alternative landing gear. So, I will
ask again...! Does anyone have some specific experience to share regarding installing
either Grove gear or the composite gear? Speaking of which, I can't
actually find Grove gear for the 601 - the sites only seem to list gear for the
701. Specifically, what Grove gear are people installing?
BTW, I spoke with the factory and they said that although they are exploring the
composite gear, it is only going to be offered to European customers. Has anyone
here actually installed the composite gear from Aircraft Spruce (NK-03A-550

gears for the AMD factory built airplanes.

Subject: | Grove Gear for 601XL |
I have the Grove gear for my 601XL/TD in the living room, not installed
yet. I ordered it from the factory with the gun-drilling and I have to
say, "They are a work of art." Especially compared to the factory gear,
which is about 15 lbs heavier. They are 4.5" wide and .875 thick across
the flat, while the legs are tapered.
They make them with a multi-step process from 7075, which involves
cutting the blank and doing the gun-drilling and machining for the
axles, annealing and primary bending, 1/2 heat treating, secondary
bending, final heat treating and final cold check and touch-up. The
fore and aft edges are radiused in the leg part for lower drag without
needing full fairings. The factory finish is mill, but I have done a
wet sanding pass with 1200 on the legs and am sure they will polish up
really nicely.
I also ordered a pair of "radius blocks" from Grove which I will attach
to the gear brackets parallel to the centerline, which insure that the
gear does not torque load the fuselage and that the gear will deflect
straight along the axis when it bends. I plan to use the standard
rubber strip and bracket on the bottom.
Finally, the narrower width of the gear means that I will have some
leeway in fore-aft positioning to fine tune the take-off and landing
characteristics with regard to the final CG location. My plan is to use
temporary plywood blocks during the test phase and then replace them
with permanent aluminum when done.

I've got no dog in this hunt (thankfully) but let me interject something
into this thread. 7075-T651 is NOT a corrosion resistant alloy of
aluminum. I would LOVE to save 15# by using one of their gear but
cannot see it for something that's going on floats.
Chris made the 601/701/801 from 6061 for several reasons, one of them
was it's more corrosion resistant than 2024T3.
7075 is WORSE than 2024T3 in that regard.
Certainly this fact can be mitigated to a certain degree by proper
coatings and increased maintenance/inspection. The rear spar fittings
on my Glasair have been replaced twice due to intergranular corrosion, I
was told (by Glasair) they are 7075t6. Last go-round I welded some up
from 4130.
Not trying to talk anyone out of it or throw any rocks at a product,
just making a point that someone might not have considered.

there is no shim under the bracket between the 2 top rear Longerons. Does
it just get riveted onto them and the top triangle rear panel 6b3-6?
There is a 40 thou gap should this also have a shim just like the bottom hing between

My empty XL weighed out at 799 Lbs with the CG at 290 mm.
It is probably a LOT heavier than a stock XL as I have 600x6
tires/wheels/brakes all around (nose fork from a 801), dual aux tanks &
gauges, dual sticks, dual brakes, ldg/taxi/position lights/strobes plus
EFIS, AS & Alt steam gauge backups, xpndr/alt encdr, com. stereo

The Zenith 700 lb figure is probably a zero option, min required

Chris,
I do not like shanked rivets, which you have without a shim for the
center rivet. I put a shim in - In fact, I believe I made it a working
shim (doubler) by extending the shim and tying the shim down with two
additional rivets into the 6B3-6. By tying in the shim, you minimize
bending loading of the aft center rivet.

When I was considering the Corvair I was worried it would be heavier than o

Folks:
For those of you who are worried about strength (everyone) and corrosion
resistance (not me, I live in Arizona!), here is an excerpt direct from
Grove describing their metal:
----------
Standard Finish=97All Grove landing gear are hand finished to remove any
blemishes, scratches, and dents that may have occurred during the
machining and heat treating processes. Our landing gear is manufactured
from 7075-T6 aluminum which provides superior strength but also requires
corrosion protection. The most common method is to apply epoxy primer to
the entire gear and then finish with a suitable top coat. If you choose
to polish your gear, you should be sure to prime the unexposed areas and
to maintain a protective coating of wax on the polished surfaces.
----------
FWIW, I do plan to prime and paint the center section and areas inside
the intersection fairings and wheel spats, while polishing (and waxing)
the legs. Effectively, there are no "unexposed" areas on the TD gear.
It's all outside the fuselage. That also means it is very easy to
inspect.

Hi Guys,
This week was mostly bicycle work, finishing travel stops and some tow
bars, but flying would have been seriously compromised by very windy
days. I ate lunch with the guys at the Hy-Vee and continued to add to
the instructional and pictures of the recumbent. Its getting close to
the end, save the molded fiberglass seat. Friday, Cy called to say a 601
was being assembled at Moline #1 hangar having been imported from a
Polish manufacturer, so I drove the Corvette out to see it. It could
have been called a knock-off of a 601XL but the workmanship and the
engineering were taken considerably further than one might have
expected. A Polish mechanic was hanging the dry sump Rotax 912 engine
when I got there and within an hour, I helped hang the wings on it. A
nice plane to be sure and it should be for the nearly $100K it cost the
buyer. Lots of fiberglass fairing work and a nice split-flap design with
short ailerons at the ends of the wing. A totally IFR instrument panel
was completely fitted and the mechanical approach for dual sticks was
done with serious engineering talent using proper soft stops and
construction that Zenith might well envy. Theres a lot said about good
engineering and this one was very complete aircraft down to an entire
structure of bucked rivets. There were diagonal pieces at every frame in
the fuselage. The heat muff wrapped around the exhaust muffler as a
separate stainless entity that could only be compromised by CO2 if both
containers were pierced. The firewall was stainless and the fuel lines
were also special stainless tube and the battery sat in its own nicely
made stainless box. Nose steering was differential braking, which I
would not care for, but the two-piece spring steel tapered main landing
gear were very small and nicely integrated into the bottom side of the
center spar structure. Even a tow bar was latched in the rear baggage
compartment and there was a tailskid for the possibility of contact. The
canopy acrylic was quite different by its slightly pail pink UV
protective color, and though it still tilts forward, there was a sliding
air door on each side of the canopy for flying or taxiing. The
overhanging edges of the instrument panel took ducted air pressure to 4
small adjustable air vents for good circulation in an otherwise
hot-bubble environment. The upholstery was nice, but the steep angled
side padding and narrow center panels suggested that people with wide
bottoms would never become really comfortable where it counts.
Its going to be a nice plane, but I dont think it will really ever be
called a 601, though the initial similarity was remarkable. Perhaps it
was the fire engine red and white paint job. I can't wait to see it fly.
Stay safe,,,,,,,,

Subject: | Re: Gear Questions |
Michael,
I purchased the Grove Gear for my 601XL QB kit. Grove does not specifically list
it on the website but if you call them they can give you a price. The main
issue will be the mounting of the gear. I plan on using the original Zenith
mounting brackets but I will have to hog out some aluminum saddles to take up
the extra space. Aaron Gustafson sent me pictures of his installation on his
HD. He drilled a hole in the center of the gear for the attachment of a lateral
brace to keep the gear from sliding side to side. The HD mount will not fit
the XL but the concept is the same.
I have included pictures of my gear and of Aaron's mounting hardware.
Regards,
Bob Tezyk
