Subject: | 701 elevator cable.Weird problem |
Hello all.
The plans call for a bungee from a starboard side fuselage stiffener to the top
elevator cable. I just did a hookup of my elevator cables. Alone, they work fine.
Picture this if you will.
I set aileron control to central. I tension the elevator cables. I work the elevator.
Works fine. Now I move stick right to move ailerons. The elevator cables
tighten up. Move the stick left and the elevator cables go slack. I have done
trial hookups before and never noticed this. Maybe I didn't move the ailerons
at those times. I cannot see anything wrong with the assembly. By design, the
Torque tube is on fuselage centerline so that means the elevator bellcrank is
off center, to the right. Looking at it that way, it makes sense that this tightening/slacking
would happen. However I've never heard discussion of it here.
Now, back to the Bungee. The plans make comment that the bungee is necessary
to stop the elevator cables touching. Is it a fact that the bungee will also
correct this problem of tensioning. In my head I can see how it would work. Am
I the last one to know or do I have a weird airplane/assembly.......Geoff

Hi Larry;

Hi Guys,
This week was mostly bicycle work, finishing travel stops and some tow
bars, but flying would have been seriously compromised by very windy
days. I ate lunch with the guys at the Hy-Vee and continued to add to
the instructional and pictures of the recumbent. Its getting close to
the end, save the molded fiberglass seat. Friday, Cy called to say a 601
was being assembled at Moline #1 hangar having been imported from a
Polish manufacturer, so I drove the Corvette out to see it. It could
have been called a knock-off of a 601XL but the workmanship and the
engineering were taken considerably further than one might have
expected. A Polish mechanic was hanging the dry sump Rotax 912 engine
when I got there and within an hour, I helped hang the wings on it. A
nice plane to be sure and it should be for the nearly $100K it cost the
buyer. Lots of fiberglass fairing work and a nice split-flap design with
short ailerons at the ends of the wing. A totally IFR instrument panel
was completely fitted and the mechanical approach for dual sticks was
done with serious engineering talent using proper soft stops and
construction that Zenith might well envy. Theres a lot said about good
engineering and this one was very complete aircraft down to an entire
structure of bucked rivets. There were diagonal pieces at every frame in
the fuselage. The heat muff wrapped around the exhaust muffler as a
separate stainless entity that could only be compromised by CO2 if both
containers were pierced. The firewall was stainless and the fuel lines
were also special stainless tube and the battery sat in its own nicely
made stainless box. Nose steering was differential braking, which I
would not care for, but the two-piece spring steel tapered main landing
gear were very small and nicely integrated into the bottom side of the
center spar structure. Even a tow bar was latched in the rear baggage
compartment and there was a tailskid for the possibility of contact. The
canopy acrylic was quite different by its slightly pail pink UV
protective color, and though it still tilts forward, there was a sliding
air door on each side of the canopy for flying or taxiing. The
overhanging edges of the instrument panel took ducted air pressure to 4
small adjustable air vents for good circulation in an otherwise
hot-bubble environment. The upholstery was nice, but the steep angled
side padding and narrow center panels suggested that people with wide
bottoms would never become really comfortable where it counts.
Its going to be a nice plane, but I dont think it will really ever be
called a 601, though the initial similarity was remarkable. Perhaps it
was the fire engine red and white paint job. I can't wait to see it fly.
Stay safe,,,,,,,,

Geoff,
Don't despair. I did that plenty enough for the both of us. If you search the archives,
you'll find plenty of discussion on this.
In short, the cables will tension with aileron deflection. The trick is to carefully
tension the cables so that there is minimum acceptable tension in neutral,
and not excessive tension at the extremes. I found that I could minimize the
effect, by moving the upper hole on the elevator horn slightly. I ended up
sacrificing one horn in the name of experimentation, and made a second when I
felt I had minimized the tension change. Be very wary of overtensioning. I spent
a lot of time with a cable tensiometer, and it's really easy to overdo tension
so that you have 30+ pounds per cable at the extreme, and 60 pounds total
on the linkages seem excessive.
So basically set the system for maybe 20lbs tension with the aileron in a position
to cause max tension, and connect a bungee to the right side, pulling on the
cable that makes sense (can't remember upper or lower) with at least a pound
or so in all positions. Remember that the full aileron position is rarely used.
Then check the minimum tension, and there should be no real slop, if you
have a friend hold the elevator and you move the stick fore and aft. If you feel
increasing resistance when you move the stick to the right, in my opinion
you probably have excessive tension. Every time I had a noticeable effort to move
to the right, the cable tensions would increase to well over 30lbs. I had
the tools at work to make my own bungees and I made an eye loop with bungee stock,
slightly stretched it over a short length of nylon tubing, and slid it over
the elevator cable.
I found that there isn't much room between having no elevator slop, and having
reasonably low tension at the extremes. And you might want to play with the location
of one of the elevator control horn holes. My first one never would have
worked, I moved it by a few mm and found a magic combination.
Good luck,
Bill Mileski

Darryl,
The aileron trim mechanism is all contained within the aileron, so your only
concern would be running the wiring through the finished wing. Shouldn't be
a problem either way.

Hello group ,another peskey question for you scratch builders . The
plans call for .016 material for part# 6-B-21-6 ,has anyone used a
thicker material for this .I tried a piece of .025 ,but it not want to
take the shape around the last bulkhead . After seeing some published
weights of the completed 601XLs I may want to stay within what the plans
call for. I was expecting a total empty weight of around 700# .

Hi David,
The aircraft had the name AERO Sp and it was serial number 25 of this run.
It had been flight tested and issued Airworthiness Certificate in
Poland. The wings still
had the letters issued for European registration painted on the bottom.
Then it was taken
apart and crated to Moline, IL for reassembly. It might take a while to
get data specific on
this plane, but I'm sure it's out there. I'll try to build a temp page
for pictures taken on my site.
Might be a couple of days.

Hi Wade,
I'd recommend you use .025 on the panels that you'll put your hands to
board the plane, front top skin, rear top skin and use .020 on further
back if .025 is a problem. .016 will dent and deform when you least
need that kind of problem, especially top surfaces.

Hi,
the website
http://www.utdallas.edu/~klaus/Airplane/canopy_latches.html
shows an alternate latching mechanism that is positively locked from the
in side
and cannot be opened accidentally. The biggest drawback of the side-opening
is in high wind conditions. At that time, one must be VERY careful so that
the canopy does not take off. I had that once in California, with 30 kts
gusting
to 37. It was very difficult to get out of the plane without inflicing
damage on
the canopy. The other drawback is the inconvenence of opening and closing
and opening and closing when loading the plane. Oh well, I had that system
now for 11 years, and am used to it. But convenient it is not.
Happy flying,
Klaus

Dave,
The aircraft is the AT-3 and it's exceedingly well done. There were
several things on it that one tends to learn from
and look back saying I could have solved it this way too. The wood in
the crating I saw was clear, straight grained and
no knots to 18 feet and I would have liked to have taken it home.

Each gear leg, with wheel and brake, came in at about 12.5 pounds per

Subject: | Re: 701 elevator cable.Weird problem |
I think that website fix is for the 601?
The 701 is quite different. Mine has this problem also. It was assembled and rigged
by CZAW so it arrived to me with elevator cable tension just applying at
stick neural position, and springback effect if the aileron is held over to the
right. This is a niusance as its hard to push owtwards with ones arm, flying
from the left seat. the bungee installed in the location shown has no influence
on this. I was cosidering applying another bungee much closer to the control
end of the cables, to add bias tension to the other cable, but i trialled doing
this by hand and wasnt convinced it would correct the issue.
I enquired to ZAC but got no response, I am following this up again now.
I feel that if the elevator control horn that the cables connect to was folded
to the left so that the cable holes were in line with the aileron tube centreline,
the tension would only increase, both directions of stick travel. This mod
might require two bends about 5 degress, each about 1" either side out of the
centreline of the horn?
My concern is that doing this might render the horn more prone to collapse under
overload, because it would have less strength from being bent by the slight
sideways loads that would now occur, however these loads probably already exist
while the aileron is over to the left or right anyway?
We just need the OK from the factory, as to whether there is a reason for it to
be this way. Its not much fun taxying out with left down aileron and wind behind
the tail, causes the stick to shake around as the elevator wobbles (read flutter)
against the loose cables.

Klaus,
Thanks for the link. What material have you used to line the inside of your

Hi,
the website
http://www.utdallas.edu/~klaus/Airplane/canopy_latches.html
shows an alternate latching mechanism that is positively locked from the
in side
and cannot be opened accidentally.
Happy flying,
Klaus

Subject: | 701 Elevator cable. Weird problem |
I think the problem is inherent to the off center control horn setup. My
solution was to run the down elevator cable as slack as I could to avoid
the tightening of the cable with right aileron application. So far it
works ok(85 hours). I didn't install the bungee-just slipped a length of
clear vinyl tubing over one of the cables and let em rub. I will
periodically inspect the cable under the tubing to be sure corrision
doesn't develop.
Admittedly somewhat shadetree but then that's in keeping with the offset
control horn.

Jetboy wrote "the bungee installed in the location shown has no influence on this.
I was considering applying another bungee much closer to the control end of
the cables, to add bias tension to the other cable,"
......Ralph....At this time I have installed a bungee about 18" to 24" back from
the elevator bellcrank/horn. It's attached to a right side vertical stiffener.
It had mostly the effect that I expected. I set neutral tension with right
aileron. Now when I move to central and onwards to left aileron the bungee takes
up the slack and maintains approx neutral tension. About 90 % of the problem
went away. Next step is tweaking the position. I 'm sure I didn't get THAT lucky
on my first attempt. I can probably get it a little better. Dissapointing
though to find this problem now. I never heard of it before. However. what I
don't like is that a bungee will be holding my elevator steady(??) while I am
flying. It's probably all Zed's fault .........Geoff

Subject: | 701 partially built kit for sale, 75 cents on the dollar |
My friend still has his 701 kit for sale. Tail, and one wing done. Has
stuff for the other wing and an extra set of tanks. He says he will
take 75 cents on the dollar, has about 9k invested. Anyone who wants to
start a 701 and doesn't want to save 3k from the get go is really
missing out. Sounds like a Bargain to me. E-mail me and I will put you
in touch. lrm@skyhawg.com.

Subject: | Lower engine mounts |
Has anybody had trouble fitting the lower engine
mounts? When they are attached to the firewall as per
the plans, but the mounts don't seem to quite center
over the lower longerons. It seems that the front
angle of the brackets are a little too flat and they
don't want to follow the angle of the longerons. With
a little force, I can spread them out a little, but
that doesn't seem right on such a critical part. Any
ideas?
