Hey John! Welcome back. I wondered what had happened to you. I saw that you
were building a new shop and figured you were tied up with that. I'm still
going to order one of those cool hats from your friend.=0A=0AAlthough I'm
certainly no expert, I documented scratchbuilding my spars on my kitlog sit
e. Check it out. If you're like me, having a number of resources to draw fr
om gives me a good idea of what I'm getting myself into. Scratchbuilding yo
ur spars is totally do-able, just be prepared to do your best, most accurat
e work, and be prepared to learn a few new skills (solid riveting, precise

Mike,
Sounds like you have visited the Aeroelectric Connection site, but I definitely
recommend you purchase the book as well. It is loaded with schematics and has
offers practical knowledge for wiring your plane. It's written so you do not
need to be an electrical engineer, but IMHO offers the best and safest solutions
for wiring your aircraft. I'm nowhere near the phase of the building process
you're at, but I have been reading this book when not building.

Hi Everyone.
I have a few questions.
I'm up to the fuel and electrical system for my 601 XL. Why does the fuel
system tee off to the two different fuel pumps? Wouldn't it be better to go
from the gasolator to the electric fuel pump to the mechanical pump to the
engine? The parts count would be less. Is it safer to run them in paralell
like the plans call for? I've never trusted T fittings and you could
eliminate 2 of them by running them together.
What size wire are you using for different items like the fuel pump, nav
lights, battery cable, etc? I'm ordering everything I need today. I
appreciate any help. Thanks.

I just ran into the problem described below. After doing some research, I
discovered that Honeywell has replaced the discontinued micro switch V3L-3
with micro switch V3-1 and roller leaf assembly JV-5. I purchased them
online at www.gopherelectronics.com for $18.41 each plus shipping ($8.31 for
V3-1 and $10.10 for JV-5).

Caution: If you are using a Commercial Aircraft products Flap motor DO NOT
break one of the up or down roller limit switches.
The V3L-3 Honeywell/Micro switch has been discontinued and after trying
extensively to locate another switch that will fit the D145 flap motor I am
unable
to find one of the right dimensions that will work on this design.
Commercial Aircraft will not sell you one of their stock. Honeywell will not
sell you one of their stock. The authorized suppliers will sell you one of
these $5 switches for $50 to $70 dollars which will be shipped from
Honeywell.
An expensive lesson learned about using loctite and trying to remove the
screw.....
P.S. I bought the only two I could find on the Honeywell dealers inventory
list that were less than $50 and they were $28 each.

I'm flying a 601XL with a Rotax 912uls turning a woodcomp Klassic prop.
With a compromise setting for climb and cruise I'm seeing about 120mph at
5400-5500 with a max of about 129mph.
Typical climb is 1000-1200fpm.

Use pencil and eraser, I get the big rectangle kind, and have at it. It
is all about learning and doing.

A non operating fuel pump will restrict the flow of fuel to some degree.
Sucking fuel through this restriction, under some circumstances, can
lead to vapor lock. With the pumps in parallel, each pump has an
unrestricted supply of fuel and there's less chance of vapor lock.
The facet fuel pumps will run on a 5 Amp circuit so 18 AWG wire will
work. For most circuits, find out what the steady state current draw is,
add at least 50% and choose a wire and fuse appropriately. The length of
the wire run may be a factor in choosing the right size wire. (Rule of
thumb: no more than 3% voltage drop over the length of the wire.) There
are aircraft wire size calculators on the web that may help. For your
battery cable, you will probably need at least #4 wire. If the battery
is in the tail for balance purposes, you will probably need #2 wire.
Although there is no requirement to, I would recommend you use aircraft
grade Tefzel wire, at least in the cabin area. If something does short
out and burn, tefzel won't give off toxic smoke.

the rule I was told is run the tanks to the tank selector, then gascolator, then
the pump.
GC cleans any debrise before going to pump.
