The Arplast prop can be made "constant speed" by a small control unit they
now sell.

Hey Ben. I just got started on the 701 having attended
the Zenith Workshop in March of '07 and really enjoyed
it. My wife went with me and that really helped as she
was quite involved right from the beginning. I am
buying the components kit, and have completed the
rudder, elevator, and horizontal stabilizer, and I
picked up my wing and fuel system kits on May 17. I
have the right wing, spar and ribs built except for a
couple of minor touches.
The kit is well built, straightforward, and I find the
prints quite easy to read. You have to take your time
and study just a bit, but that is part of the
experience. This is my first attempt at building and I
wish I had done it sooner. I love it.
I had a test flight in the 701 in Mexico, MO and the
visibility with the bubble doors is very good. If you
can find a way to go to a Rudder Workshop, do it, or
just visit the factory and take a test flight. The
folks in Mexico are very nice and extremely helpful
with everything I've needed since I started. There are
at least 3 701's being built here near the Quad-Cities
and one of them is plans built and about to fly. As
they say on the Zenith promotional video, "Just do
it". Take care.

but for the archive...
If you install an inflight adjustable prop on either a 601 or 701 it is no longer
legal for LSA flight.

It's better if you have a link to a site you maintain for pictures and
just place the address

Yes - under "Post a Reply" enter your message and click "add an attachment" -
another box will appear prompting you to "choose file"... you click that and
select the file on your computer you want to upload. Under "file comment" simply
tell what it is. When ready click "add attachment."
Important - keep your file size small. Learn how to use your graphics software
to reduce the size of each file to be uploaded. This can be done without losing
too much quality. I use photoshop and under "File" it gives a choice of
"Save for Web" which helps a lot.

You should also be aware that once an airplane no longer meets the requirments
for LSA, it can't ever be registerd as an LSA again.

During my build, I used a 12V battery pack from a cordless drill (a 14V pack
could also be used), to run preliminary checks of continuity/operation and
also preliminary "smoke tests" ** (the amperage in the battery pack is a
heck of a lot less than using a 12/14 volt aircraft battery). When I ran my
first smoke test on all systems before first flight, everything worked!
** As has been stated by many "experts", Electrical systems work by having
smoke run through the wiring. As long as the smoke stays in the wiring,
everything is ok.

I'm sure you are correct about this. However the planes we build at
home are not LSA planes anyway. They are Amature Homebuilt
Experimental. The Sport Pilot rule does not require that the the SP
fly only and LSA, but rather any plane that meats the LSA rule - which
the "stock" 601 does.
I'd be curious how an LSA updated with CS prop would be classifed. It
might actually be unflyable in the US as it no longer meets the LSA
rule, isn't experimental and certainly isn't certified.

I doubt it would be any different than a C-150 that you yanked of the original
prop and installed an in-flight adjustable without a STC.
Not Airworthy.
I asked the FSDO about this question. I can't find the e-mails but I gave
them a couple of scenarios and asked if it would be LSA legal.
One was an in-flight adjustable that had an out of cockpit lockout that
could be set to turn off the in-flight adjustability when being used under
the LSA rules. They said no.
I also asked about what if I put an in-flight adjustable on now and flew it
as a PSEL and then later decided to convert it to a ground adjustable prop
and fly it as an LSA and they didn't give me a solid yes or no. When I asked about
it during a follow up phone call they said they were asking higher authority
because of an issue they did know about but they weren't 100% sure if it would
carry over to a Homebuilt or not. They never did get back to me.
The issue was if a plane was ever granted airworthiness status that made it not
LSA legal it could not be changed back to LSA legal status. The example they
gave me was certain models and mods to the Ercoupe. I may have my model numbers
wrong but basically the C model is LSA legal and the D isn't. The difference
is Max GW. There is a mod that can be applied to the C that makes it a D and
if that mod has been applied it can never be a LSA legal plane again even if you
remove whatever that mod was.
Just for the record this was the Little Rock AR FSDO.

Ok, as long as a plane meets LSA criteria it can be flown by a SP. If you
build a plane with a inflight adjustable prop then remove it later for a
fixed pitch, and the rest of the plane is still LSA criteria then yes a SP
can fly it. You can fly any plane that meets the criteria even if it is IFR
rated, just as long as the landing gear is fixed, ground adjustable prop and
top speed below 238 mph and gross weight less than 1380lbs. As a home built
you can remove the cs prop and change it to fixed or viseversa with just a
log book entry and a corrected weight and balance, with a certified airplane
that is a whole new kettle of fish that requires a 337 be filed and atleast
a field approval before flight. Mentioning the mod to the C to made it a D,
yeah even if you remove the mod it is still a D until all the paper work is
done, including the 337 and verification by your local FAA inspector.

keep in mind the 138 mph speed limit is at sea level so a plane that cruises at
160 mph at 7500 feet is still within lsa bounds. the limit is the speed at sea
level.

I have an unused set with the long bolts that you can have for free. Note
that the upper mounts are the old style ones that are *not* integrated with
the canopy attachment points. Picture attached. If you want them tell me
where to send them.

William Wynne is working on it. Look a little down from the top of this

be a good alternative to the 912? maybe VW?

Corvair people-
I'm to the point where I have to remove the short bolts already tack welded
into the firewall engine mounts, and need to know the least destructive way of
getting rid of the old ones. Do I have to beef up the existing parts, or should
I even go so far as to make new ones?

Subject: | Re: Corvair/Zenith engine mounts/701 |
Ben,
Some think so but it has been done before if you search a bit and do
some digging.
John Lowther in New Zealand flew the first 701/vair about a yr ago. His
empty weight was only 25# or so heavier than a typical 701/912. All his
buddies that were giving him grief during the build process got very
quiet when the airplane was weighed.
John removed the Vair and installed a 912 after the test period,
thinking the lighter (but not as much lighter as you might think)Rotax
would perform as well as the Vair. Talked to him a month ago and he's
planning on building up another Vair for his 701as he misses the
YEEEEHAAAAAA on take off/climb and the low vibration, low rpm cruise he
got with the Vair.
There are 5-6 of us building this combo (including William Wynn now )
and several are getting close. Alum cyls are now avail (untried at
this point but it isn't new technology, some teething pains expected)
that save 18# so if you are serious about weight control on the rest of
the airplane you will have a low cost PERFORMER.
At the moment there are no FWF kits, you gotta roll your own mount,
cowling, and a few other bits so if you are a kit only kinda guy this
might be a show stopper for you but in a yr from now this will be a
popular combo, you heard it here first.
Do your own homework and ignore those who haven't done theirs.
Been kinda quiet here lately, gotta do my part to keep it lively :)
LOW&SLOW John

Right now, I am looking at the direct drive VW with water cooled
heads from Great Plains and/or I am also very attracted to an engine
that does not yet exist which is the single rotor based on the Mazda
rotary engine. I will not install less than 100 hp since I have
very short (800 ft) grass field. I like the Jabiru and Rotax but
they are out of my league financially. I like the Harley Hog engine
too. It looks cool and sounds great. Jerry 701 0% done

Subject: | Re: Flight instructor |
Since the list has been quiet lately, I offer the following:
A photographer for CNN was assigned to cover southern California's
Wildfires last
year. He wanted pictures of the heroic work the Firefighters were doing as
they
battled the blazes.
When the photographer arrived on the scene, he realized that the smoke was
so thick
it would seriously impede, or even make impossible, his getting good
photographs
from the ground level. He requested permission from his boss to rent a
plane and
take photos from the air.
His request was approved and he used his cell phone to call the local
County
airport to charter a flight. He was told a single engine plane would be
waiting for
him at the airport.
Arriving at the airfield, he spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger.
He jumped
in with his bag, slammed the door shut, and shouted, "Let's go".The pilot
taxied
out, swung the plane into the wind and roared down the runway. Once in the
air, the
photographer instructed the pilot, "Fly over the valley and make two or
three low
passes so I can take some pictures of the fires on the hillsides."
"Why?" asked the pilot.
"Because I'm a photographer for CNN," he responded. "And I need to get some
close-up shots."
The pilot was strangely silent for a moment, finally he stammered, "So,
what you're
telling me, is...you're NOT my flight instructor?"...

I seem to recall that at one time there was a main gear axle drilling guide that
was being passed around. I'd gladly pay shipping both ways to borrow one.
Thanks!
