Simply stated, there is no effective substitute for hexavalent chromium for corrosion protection of aircraft aluminum alloys. It is even "self healing" if scratched. Phosphates may be better for iron and steel. Having said that, 6061 is much more corrosion resistant itself than the more commonly used 2000-series alloys. The main downside to zinc-chromate is that it is toxic, both spray mist and sanding dust. Cost is almost identical at the suppliers I use, Aircraft spruce and a local marine supply store. Also, green is just yellow with a little carbon black added. The reason for that is that back in the 1930's, the Army wanted something eaisier on the eyes for exposed surfaces inside the aircraft. Yellow is generally used under paint. Green works just as well.

Ken, I went with Lowrance. Your list includes all good products. I spent about a week learning how to use mine, instead of watching TV. The simulator mode is great, you can fly anywhere/anytime and try out all the great inovations before you even get into the aircraft. But check with Aircraft Spruce last, they will beat anyprice that you find. I just called and told them that I could get a better price at "xyz" and the lowered their price. I have reduced the affordable units to three: - Garmin GPS 296 $1,495 - Lowrance 200C $999 - AvMap EKP-IVC $1,495 Your comments are appreciated. If you have flown with any, please indicate your experience. Juan, I can't make up my mind about either the Lowrance 2000c or the Avmap. I like the big screen on the Avmap. Does the 2000c do more? I also love the Vista Nav but there aren't enough out there yet to know if they are dependable. I notived the price is really coming down on GPS units. E-bay has them NEW for much less than most dealers Joe in Oshkosh

Scott I am embarrassed! I got bit by the rules committee at the fly-in and did not really complete. I did not think anyone noticed. They left the distance markings on the tarmac so I will go out one of these evenings and measure my landing and take off distance with and without slats like I wanted to. They brought up a "carbon cub" this year. Every non-structural piece was made out of carbon fiber. It was light and had a 220 hp IO-360 engine. It got off in less than the length of it's fuselage. I don't remember the exact number but it was 17' or so. Can you imagine a cub taking off in 21' and getting second place? Bill Wilcox Valdez, AK N801BW 307 hrs Did any Zenith's compete in this years competition? I saw Bill Wilcox took first :) in last years competition... -Scott

One under-appreciated feature of the gps docking gizmo is that it takes away the option of manuvering the screen to whatever position/angle suits you best at a given moment. That positiion and angle are subject to change on different flights. A RAM mount arm is much more versatile and if/when you change to a different/newer unit you are not going to be SOL with the old docking station. Also, the RAM mounting arms come in at least three different lengths to sut your desires. It's worth thinking about. I can't really comment on the e-mail/phone support from the factory since I have only ever dealt with them when I picked up my landing gear kit. Roger was an excellent host and a big help when I showed up unannounced late on a Friday Afternoon last Fall. I can, however, comment on the excellent service I have received from Mark Townsend and David Barth from CAN-ZAC. Although it means I'm not buying much directly from them, Mark and David have both encouraged me to scratch build my CH-701. They are always quick to reply to both my e-mails and to my phone calls. If they don't know the answer (rarely happens) they find out for me quickly. I cannot ask for better customer service. Try just replacing the rivet. If you have no further problems, great. If it starts to smoke again, try up-sizing the rivet. Dave Downey Harleysville (SE) PA Zodiac 601XL/Corvair? --------------------------------- Ready for the edge of your seat? Did Isend you a photo of my panel? I don't think a panel dock could posssibly offer the range of positions and angles that a RAM mount system can provide (I could be wrong of course.... it has happened before). And then what do you do in four or five years when you decide to get a newer and improved-er gps unit? Remove the old panel dock and buy and install a new one when you could just swap the RAM ball over to the new unit? Don'y gry mr wrong here, I do think they look very professional and mucho tidy but the objections I just described are deal killers for me. Dred PS: How's your plane coming along? I just started rivetting the forward side skins, main gear mounts etc. The end of the building saga sure seems to be a long way off still. ---- Gig Giacona <wr.giacona@suddenlink.net> wrote: > > They've come up with a fix for that Dred. > They have bot horizontal and vertical angle thingys. > > http://www.airgizmos.com/products.asp

Members, This is for all GPS navagators who have lost the GPS screen because of excessive sunlight. I had the same problem and made a wrap arround shade about 7 inches from the screen surface out of black cardboard and this solved my problem by putting the screen back in the dark. It's a simple fix that works. Tracy Stone

I have to second that. I was amazed at how well the simple ZAC tool worked for everthing on the XL. The compound curve on the wigtip was one the scariest first attempts, but it came out perfect. Then my over-confidence got me in trouble on the second one and I scraped one L-angle before getting a good one. But, after doing others in the fuse, wing lockers, etc., with no problem, I see no reason to invest time and/or money for anything else Seems to me the secret is to tweak gradually, back and forth so to speak, because you can always tweak more, but when you tweak too much you might as well alocate the part to the scrap pile - but I guess that probably would apply to any other crimp tool as well. Although they say the guy with the most tools wins, I'll have to concede as a looser in the crimping category. Just one observation: when you crimp too much, to some extent you can "uncrimp". In other words, you can reduce the amount of crimp. Hi Listers: This is how I get answers to questions from Zenith. Make initial contact by phone, some times this takes several tries as Zenith does not have voice mail, they prefer the personal touch. Depending on my question I ask for either Caleb or Sebastien. Either of them can speak to technical needs. I usually follow up with email. For workshops, ordering or delivery questions either of the ladies in the office can take care of you. Can Zac is also a great source for technical answers. Regards, John Read ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

OK, I have one. An attractive young lady was visiting the control tower of a small airfield, when a very forward young controller asked her if she liked airplanes. She said yes, but admitted she didn't know much about them. "I have my own plane" he said braggingly. She: "Oh really, what kind" He: "See that very large plane over there" She: "Yes" "Well that's just a C130, I have a C150" Kevin Bonds Nashville TN 601XL Plans building. <http://home.comcast.net/~kevinbonds> http://home.comcast.net/~kevinbonds do not archive DO NOT ARCHIVE
