I went to Corvair Day at the Zenith factory in Mexico, Mo last year. There was
a guy there building a LongEZ. When his family realized that was the plane that
John Denver had died in they all started to give him a lot of grief. Then
he decided to put a Corvair engine on it. One of his family members said you
mean the Ralph Nader engine? His reply was, Yes, Im putting a Ralph Nader engine
on a John Denver plane!
NOW THATS FUNNY!
Sorry to keep this thread going but
A commercial airline passenger asks the pilot how often their planes crash and

And Clyde or I could have said the same thing - so what! Again, though,
such comments are not helpful - nor do they advance the community of which
you are a part. In fact, I didn't say it because I have no interest in you
leaving the list. I do have an interest in you chilling out, not taking
someone to task for posting an aviation related joke, and not taking offense
where none is intended.

I am working with the kit-supplied fuel selector valve (601XL, dual sticks). It
is located on my center console, about the middle. It has three 1/4"NPT ports
(female threads), one on the side(input), one on top and one on the back face
(output). Because of the width of the console and other constraints, I must use
90 degree fittings on the side and top ports. When I screw the fittings in,
finger tight, they are facing the wrong way. Swivel-type fittings would require
first installing a 1/4"NPT to -6AN adapter fitting, then the swivel fittings.
The console is not wide enough for that. I have searched Summit Racing Equipment's
extensive fittings catalog and have not found anything that would work.
At this point, I can't mount the selector valve remotely.
I am at a loss, or maybe just stuck on stupid. Any suggestions?

Can you get them oriented correctly when they are
doped and tightened with a wrench? if not, an easy
solution is to open the 1/4NPT thread another 1/2 turn
or so by running a tap in the holes. The thread is
tapered.

Subject: | Another Question on Priming |
OK. Here is yet one more question about the black art of priming/corrosion protecting
your structure.
I see that Zenith automatically applies CORTEC to interfacial areas on the parts
that make up the spars they build. They do not, however, apply the protection
to the external surfaces of the spars. By this, I'm referring to the areas
where the rivet's heads and tails bear on the aluminum sandwich.
I can certainly see the wisdom of only applying primer to the interfaces between
parts rather than the entire parts. This is where the moisture will wick and
cause corrosion.
My question is though, shouldn't the surfaces that will bear the rivets get the
same treatment. OR, I had a thought that perhaps the rivet's bearing surfaces
form essentially a gas tight seal with the part underneath, needing no protection.
I realize that my descriptions above may be a little cryptic - sorry. Another
way to describe this would be when riveting part A to part B, I would think one
should prime both sides of parts A and B rather than just the interface between
A and B because corrosion could start in the interface between the rivet head
and A or the interface between B and the rivet tail. The spars aren't built
like that though.
If anyone knows why the surfaces that the rivets bear on are not protected, please
enlighten me!

Question for the group:
I am just getting started putting my new engine (912S) on my 701. On
reading the Rotax Alert Service Bulletin I find my brand new engine came
delivered with the fuel pump that must be replaced. Do I have to eat
the cost of a new fuel pump or will Rotax or Zenith supply it?
I will call Zenith tomorrow but am curious if others have had this issue

Not a chance, easy to demonstrate, watch what happens when you spray
ACF50 or Corrosion X on the INSIDE of a wing . In a couple days there is
a 2" circle around each rivet on the OUTSIDE where the penetrant has
crawled through. Yeah, yeah, I know it's not apples to apples as water
and penetrant have different properties but humid AIR CAN and will
deposit moisture in those tight places. Seen it thousands (1000's)of
times. If you aren't going to protect ALL faying surfaces during
building, keep them protected with a treatment . I like ACF50 over
Corrosion X but it's kinda a Ford -Chevy thing I think. Just use
SOMETHING regular. John
My question is though, shouldn't the surfaces that will bear the
rivets get the same treatment. OR, I had a thought that perhaps the

Usually when Rotax will pay for the Repair/Modification they say so right in
the Service Bulletin. Such as the Stator and oil Tank Dip Stick Bullitens of
the past. Although these were for my 912Ul 80 HP engine they paid for the
part and in the case of the Stator ( very expensive ) they also paid for
renting the tools to do the job. No labor reimbersement though. Not a bad
deal!
I didn't read the Fuel Pump Bulletin in detail because it didn't apply to my
engine, so I don't know if they said anything about paying for that one.
It seems that your engine should be under warranty. I would talk with the
North American Rotax Distributor.

flames on - I have my asbestos suit on.
I believe that all the surfaces you refer to should be primed - mine will be.
I will also be touching a Q-tip with ZPP to the opening in the head of each rivet
and wiping with an acetone dampened cloth. The "coated steel" rivet mandrel
is bare at the pintail break face.
I bought some of the Cortec primer but I am simply more comfortable with the ZPP
so I am not going to use it.

No jokes were made about HD engines, I was simply appealing to Larry's sense of
humor. With a name like HawgAir there's GOTTA be some humor involved.... or so
I thought. I see now that he has a commercial operation selling Hog engines
for airplanes, I wasn't aware of this at first. I thought he was just another

sure the Corvair and Soob powered Zodiacs can do as well also.

You know, with so much serious horsepower superbike motors out there, how
come they are not turning up in Light sport aircraft?

I think it's because the trans. and eng. are in one case. I saw aYahama
powered plane once.the trans was locked in 3rd. gear..

Subject: | Re: Another Question on Priming |
Hello All:
I was using self etch primers when I started building. Recently
I switched to Cortec 373 thinned three to one with denatured alcohol. This
gives the recommended half mil coating thickness. I brush apply Cortec to all
interfaces on the inside of the structure. I have not decided what to use as a
primer when I get to final painting. The Cortec seems to bond very well
without excessive preparation. I clean of all printed stuff on the parts and all
the marking I have made with denatured alcohol, then a light rub over all
surfaces with Scotchbrite finally a wipe down with denatured alcohol. I let the
surfaces dry thoroughly before priming.

Subject: | High HP 2 cyl engines in a 701 |
Have you ever watched a 701 with a Rotax start up and shut down? Now
imagine a 2 cylinder with more horsepower. I am a big supporter of
Alternative engines and affordable aircraft for the average person.
However, I have personal feelings about installing a 2 cyl high Hp
engine in an aircraft, over time I would be curious to see the results
to the airframe. I am waiting to see a 701 pass 200hrs before I make a
final judgment.
