Jay and Gig,
I'm also just finishing that part of the assembly and am using the Zenith
supplied barbs for the rubber hoses. I will probebly use Earl's to go
through the firewall but that fitting is straight out rather than at 90
degrees.
I placed the 90 degree barbs in finger tight using a thread solution of
Saf-T-Loc Hydraulic Sealant (Brown) that seals the threads after about an
hour. That way I didn't need to have the fitting very tight at all, although
there was still some resistence (it felt like it would still turn about 60
degrees further by hand). This suggestion was made by a Tech Counselor so I
hope I have done the right thing.

I am looking for a rubber molding to fit the bottom of the 701 windshield. Can
anyone make a suggestion? Aircraft Spruce lists rubber channel but I have been
unable to pull up any listings.
Brian Unruh web site shows a nice molding he used but I can't find his e-mail address
to contact him.
Thanks

I became a test pilot and 797AT became a flying machine last evening.
The fist flight (of 12 minutes) was a lot of feeling strange sensations
that I was not used to but went well overall and the landing was OK. The
second flight this morning was very good from the lessons learned last
night and my brain ready to accept the new feels. It trims perfect and
no rudder input needed for the kind of turns I've made so far. It felt
great this morning! Ya-Hooooo!

Subject: | Re: Gross Weight |
Hi Damien,
I am currently rebuilding an early 701 airframe, the plans are dated Feb-86, with
a gross weight if 880-LBS. I am rebuilding it to the 1100-LB drawings and there
are many many differences. Not only the SP parts that differentiate the 960-LB
version from the 1100-LB model, but many parts that are on the 1100-LB model
do not exist on the 880LB model. The one Im rebuilding flew for a long time
and was even upgraded from a 2-cycle Rotax to the 80HP 912 engine. Its being
rebuilt because it was crashed, not because it had any airworthiness problems.
The early ones are a lighter version but still a very good airplane.

Subject: | Re: Windsheild Rubber Mouldingn 701 |
Mike,
I'll add contact info on my site soon, just haven't had the time lately.
I had posted this previously a while back and the answer to your question is
here.
Some answers to your questions. Hopefully helpful.
1. What is the top window made of, plexiglass or lexan? How about the
windshield? Bubble doors?
ans: The top window is made of lexan its tough in that it won't crack easy
but it will scratch easy.
The windshield is plexiglass and will crack easy. Make sure to use the
special drill bits to go thru both of them though. You can drill through the
lexan/plexiglass right into the tubing by the way with these bits. The bubble
doors are plexiglass so be careful drilling also. For cutting plexiglass I used
a
hand grinder with a fiberglass
disc. Cutting the lexan, I scored it with a utility knife and straight edge
and snapped the peices off.
2. The plans call for rivets for the top window. With all the talk of
cracking lexan or plexiglass, is it wise to use screws instead of rivets?
ans: The lexan is very tough and the rivets work fine. You can use screws
but most of the installations
I've seen are rivets. No cracking at all. I did both installations
this past summer in 95 deg weather
without issues. I'd be careful working in cold weather with the
windshield. My garage is so cold
now that I don't even want to look at the project.
3. Is the idea of the diagonal stiffener 7F12-3 to put a bow in the top
window?
ans: Yes it puts a bow in the top to keep it from flopping around, and
tightens it up. It looks good also.
4. Has anyone used some type of weatherstripping or silicone between the
window and the upper tubes to keep out water?
ans: I used silicone on the side tubes but it just squeezes out to the sides
of the tube. The window sits
on the top of the tube which does not give a goood surface for silicon. A
very thin weather strip would be
better or nothing at all since the wing root will cover this area when
installed. I would say most of the leakage will occur at the front corners around
the windshield/front wing mounts. I will use a cover when its outside.
5. It seems like the rivets at the front upper tube/cabin frame
connection will put pressure on the top window, since the cabin frame and
rivets are higher than the upper tubes. The same goes for the back
gusset, though the plans call for that area to be cut out.
ans: This is an area where the instructions do not give any info. Since the
cabin frame to the tubes is an important structural area, I did not rivet thru
the lexan into the tubes here. At the front, just set the top
window on top of the rivets and rivet thru the side tubes only, a little
bowing or pressure but it doesn't
matter.
6. What about silicone or weatherstripping for the front windshield?
Roger at Zenith says his 701 leaks pretty badly during rain. Has anyone
managed to keep the water out?
ans: I shopped around for the channel and got some useless stuff. I finally
got some from Spruce 05-01500
that worked great. It makes the windshield look very nice. The stuff
they use on the Czec 701's is really nice but I couldn't find it anywhere.
7. the list archives show that some have used the rubber channel 05-01500
from ACS for the windshield. How did you fasten the channel?
ans: That's the part number I used for channel and used polyzap from Tower
Hobbies to fasten the channel to the windshied. I would recommend using very
fine sandpaper on the windshield to roughen it up a bit where the channel
contacts it inside and outside.
This will allow the polyzap to bond better. Run a thin line inside the
channel and install it quickly, and don't
cut the channel to exact size before, trim it off at the ends after
installation. This is one of those moments
of high stress to not get the stuff all over the windshield. After the
windshield was screwed down I ran a line
of weather stripping adhesive under the channel where it contacts the
airframe.
8. Is there any problem with installing the top window, bubble doors and
front windshield before installing the wings?
ans: I hope not because I installed mine. You can tape poster board on the
top window while installing the
wing root to keep from damaging it.

Does anyone know of air vents that are available to be fitted to
the side of the cockpit skin to direct outside air on the pilot and
passenger, I am looking for the type that have a flange on the outside
to cover a rough cut opening. Metal or plastic of good quality is
desired. If so, I would like to see some pictures or be directed where I
can see pictures.
In trying to solve a problem of high cockpit heat, I installed heat
shield materiel on the firewall and wrapped some tape around the exhaust
pipes made by Thermo Tec. This reduced the amount of heat signifently,
however it's still too warm for summer flying here in Central Texas

Do you mean in addition to the factory NACA vents?
How about a vent in the canopy? Spruce p/n CC3251 or 05-01179. Cut the hole
by hand with a fly-cutter in under an hour. Pictures attached of a vent
installed on Doug Dugger's plane.

Hi Robert/Tracy Stone:
Check out Vans. They have a vent that fits in the wall, and puts a scoop
out into the slipstream. I got two, installed one, but haven't flown
with it yet.
They also have adapters for the plastic eyeballs, and cheap air hose.

*Tracy,
You can make your own channel for the inside behind a NACA opening and
add a louvered adjustable air vent out
of a GM auto for very little. They work very well so long as you
position the NACA intake at or forward of the leading
edge of the aircraft. Air vents over the wing can actually suck air
from the cabin or minimize the flow due to wing lift.
I built my own and it only takes a little time. There are commercial
equivalents, but most get into your panel with a
spherical vent. The GM vents are cylindrical and have adjustable
louvers. About $3.00 for both. See links,

I built the cowl. In fact I built it all. The only thing I purchased from
ZAC was the plans and since then have never been in contact w/ them. I do
receive the Zenair newsletter. It also has fabricated metal wing tips where
most buy the fiberglass ones and I layed up the rudder fairing. It was a
good learning experience over all.

I have tried to get information several times with nothing but silence. Are there
no XL TD builders who are flying on this list?
I have several requests:
1. I am interested in the weights from the three scales with the airplane leveled
for weight and balance determination. The CG location and condition of the
plane, empty, gross, etc. would also be useful.
2. I have the $45 plans for the TD conversion from ZAC. However, the illustrated
builders guide appears to have at least three different structural configurations
depicted all mixed together. Is this so? If it is, then how difficult is
it to dope out the correct path when scratch building that area?
The reason I am concerned is that the TD conversion appears to be "rube goldberg-y"
compared to the tricycle version. The factory assures me that it is fine
but based on a career exposed directly to aircraft engineering, I am concerned
with the longevity of the design with that conversion installed. Since I plan
to do a TD only build, It is a big issue if I ever need to convert to nose gear.
If there are any TD builder/flyers out there on this list, please respond or at
least respond off list if need be. If any others know of a builder that is not
on the list and would forward my e-mail to them I would also be grateful.

I'm building a TD with a Corvair but I'm not going to be much help

haven't driven a rivet yet. But I am located in PA. Lewistown to be exact.
