Thanks for the response Kevin; I am in Harleysville PA about 2.5 hours from you (it looks). I will file your email and perhaps in the future we can assist each other if there are questions that come up. Dave, I'm building a TD with a Corvair but I'm not going to be much help right now because I'm just getting the parts gathered together. I haven't driven a rivet yet. But I am located in PA. Lewistown to be exact. Are there no XL TD builders who are flying on this list? I have several requests: 1. I am interested in the weights from the three scales with the airplane leveled for weight and balance determination. The CG location and condition of the plane, empty, gross, etc. would also be useful. 2. I have the $45 plans for the TD conversion from ZAC. However, the illustrated builders guide appears to have at least three different structural configurations depicted all mixed together. Is this so? If it is, then how difficult is it to dope out the correct path when scratch building that area? The reason I am concerned is that the TD conversion appears to be "rube goldberg-y" compared to the tricycle version. The factory assures me that it is fine but based on a career exposed directly to aircraft engineering, I am concerned with the longevity of the design with that conversion installed. Since I plan to do a TD only build, It is a big issue if I ever need to convert to nose gear. If there are any TD builder/flyers out there on this list, please respond or at least respond off list if need be. If any others know of a builder that is not on the list and would forward my e-mail to them I would also be grateful. Thank you very much. Dose anyone have a simple way to disassemble and replace the bungee on the 701 nose wheel. Ive looked through the assembly manual and cant find any information on assembly or disassembly of the bungee. Did I miss it or am I blind? Any experienced help in this area would be appreciated. I don't know about these discussions, they seem divisive. Otoh, they may be nescessary. I once belonged to a club, we were all a friendly lot and got along relatively well. One day a new member showed up and was welcomed. He was an enthusiastic chap and set about getting deeply involved. Before long he started putting forth his ideas, shortly thereafter he started insisting on them, and eventually demanding they be adopted. Dealing with him was a tiring task involving a withering assault which resulted in him getting his way. Long story short, the club is no more. Something to think about when a person demands that no humor, no asides, belong in HIS newsgroup. do not archive. ----- Original Message ----- From: japhillipsga@aol.com To: zenith-list@matronics.com Sent: Monday, June 11, 2007 4:53 PM Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Re: joke for the day Juan, I agree with you. Bill, to answer your question, went with a guide on two separate ocassions while there. great fun! Boca Grand in FLorida is 70 miles south of St, Petersburg/Tampa FLA. A great trip in the 601xl! The fish were Tarpon, and they average 80 to 200 lbs. they call it the King of fighting fish. Think of pulling a car from 90 feet deep and then it running away from you at 30 mph!. A Marlin on Steroids! Boca Grand is the salt water fishing capital of the South East. You can fly into Ft. Myers airport, rent a car and you are in Boca Grand within 30 minutes. When you get on the island , you can rent an appratment for $200.00/night. Eat dinner at the Pink elephant which has been araound for 90 years. This place is like being in the Bahamas. Great fishing all around you for all sorts of game fish- Shark, tarpon, snook, pompano GINORMOUS Red fish, Call ahead to the chamber of commerce and they will give you a list of FIshing Guides. It is a great weekend for Hubby and wife. The beaches are second to none. Others may have a better plan, but looks like the fuselage needs to be supported so the entire nosegear assembly can slide out. Doesn't appear that there is room for a pry bar to stretch the bungee. This isn't any help, but maybe there'll be a neat, slick, fast and easy way to do this. Anybody? Regards, Zed/701/R912/90+%/etc do not archive

Zed, Guys & gals, Nose Gear Bungee Replacement! Mine is a 601HD but pretty much the same as the 701. I've already replaced - with the engine in place - mine. As someone suspected, I blocked up under the engine mount ( with the cowl off! ) and jacked that up high enough to clear the ground. Cut the old damaged / frayed bungee with a razor - one rubber band at a time so to speak. Now drop out the gear far enough to install the new bungee. Slide the gear up to the point where it is time to stretch the bungee. While my helper went to the big hangar to find "something" to stretch the bungee, I was contemplating making a "special" tool as some had done. Then it hit me, try a screw driver ( maybe 10 inches long - one that you get in that tight place) under the bungee and into the tube on the front of the gear leg and it slid right on!!. Remember this is with the airplane jacked up.When my helper came back, he said I couldn't find anything to do the job. I told him, don't worry about it. it's done. Simple as that. Let the airplane down slowly, guide the top of the gear through the hole and install the retainer plate on top. No sweat. Well, that's how I did it. Guys this is only my opinion but I have found that most people who insist on having their way have a great big ego that needs feeding and the way they feed it is by getting their way. Therefore the best way to deal with someone like that is do not respond to anything he or she says. Ignore them in total. They will soon get the message and start making sugestions and/or providing answers to questions and behaving like a lady or gentleman. Tracy Stone Harker Heights, Tx ZodiacXL w/Jabiru 3300

Craig, Yes, I have the factory NACA vents installed but cant get the airflow adjusted any higher than my chest. I just called Aircraft Spruce and ordered a pair of the plexiglass vents which I will install on the canopy sides so I can get cool outside air blowing right in my face. Thanks much for the information. Thank you for the compliment Bob. It was a wonderful process, building from Zenith plans and I really enjoyed it. All- To answer all the well intentioned XL-ers out there, the bottom left diagram of 6-F-6 of the HDS plans call for "Angle between the floor skin and firewall, 80 degrees". You guys ought to know me by now- after all the times I've been burned, I wouldn't fart without a can of Renuzit on hand! do not archive Bill Naumuk HDS Fuse/Corvair Townville, Pa

Dave, I have a flying HDS / TD / Corvair. I am not sure what "rube goldberg-y" means, but the design is sound. I also scratch built all landing gear components. It was a piece of cake. Check the archives from about 6 months ago. I had a lengthy post on how and why I went about converting from the tailspring and fork setup described in the plans to a Matco full swivel tailwheel setup. The price was right, it could have saved a bunch of time, and handles MUCH better on the ground. Please forward specific questions to me personally, as I seldomly monitor the list these days... From: "floyd wilkes" <fwilkes@gvtc.com>
Previously I had found the pre drilled aft bottom skin had the tie down hole in the wrong place. Today, I find the leading edge skins are not only misdrilled for the outboard nose rib but the are also 10 mm too short at the wing tip and 5mm too short on the inboard side. Called Zenith and Caleab confirmed they have a bad batch of skins. I picked up my kit at the May 11, 07 rudder class. Any one else having any problems with the skins? -------- Floyd Wilkes Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=117938#117938

All- Was at a Corvair convention over the weekend and came back with two state-specific jokes. 1. Why are there so few all-wood homebuilts in Pennsylvania? Because our wives go "How thoughtful, he cut me some kindling" and burn up our ribs starting the stove. 2. Why are so few gear kits sold in West Virginia? Why bother, your project will be sitting on blocks anyway! Only 48 more to go. Come on, guys, lighten up. do not archive Bill Naumuk HDS Fuse/Corvair Townville, Pa

David, I am and have been building a TD version of the XL for the past 4 years. I hope to have it flying soon. I am just now getting ready to do weight and balance, if fact I tried to do it today with 3 walmart spring scales but discovered (should have known) that the weight at either of the main gear is over 300 lbs, well over the limit of the scales. The plans for the TD version I used for my aircraft are probably the same ones you purchased since I don't think there has been any update to them in the last few years. I found the detail in the drawings sufficient to build from with some thought and some improvisation. The photo assembly guides were not so helpful. As far as converting an XL build as a TD to a tricycle gear, It could be done but I think it would be difficult. If you are having second thoughts about the TD configuration and thinking you could convert it to a trike later, maybe you should think about it some more before you decide. Take a look at my web site, lots of pictures that may help. I have recently added a search feature to help locate areas of interest. www.n601bz.com Bill Sewell N601BZ On 6/10/07, David Downey <planecrazydld@yahoo.com> wrote: > > I have tried to get information several times with nothing but silence. > Are there no XL TD builders who are flying on this list? > > I have several requests: > > 1. I don't think this is appropriate conversation for . . . Ha Ha just kidding. I'm waiting on that serious one though. Anyone what to make a wager on when it will come through. Anyway, I'm a fly-fisherman. I have always wanted to do some saltwater fly-fishing. Anywhere around there to do that? Sounds like a fun trip once my plane is done. Daydreaming, about these sorts of things, keeps me going during those long building sessions. And that is VERY relevant in my opinion. Thanks for that. Also I agree with Tracy Stone; ignore people who are just trying to be disagreeable. I was addressed last week for making a dry joke. You'll notice I pretty much ignored it, and resisted the urge to answer back. Thought it would be a worse crime to add emails to the situation. Just found the whole situation ironic anyway.
