I had reported a engine stumble during the mag check a couple of weeks ago.
My distributor caps were loose. I filed .010" off the retainers to tighten
them up. Since that time, have made multiple flights and no more stumble
issues. Others have reported the distributor caps loosening over time. If
you develop a stumble during mag check, suggest you look for loose
distributor caps.

When I hear complaints like these, I realize how fortunate we all are. What I'm
*not* hearing are complaints like, "massive structural failure" or "unstable
in all axes".
Any aircraft design still in production is in a state of flux. It can be the newest
whiz-bang design with a single example flying or a spam can using 1940's
technology. Any design is going to evolve and usually for the better. (My apologies
to those in Kansas for using the "E" word.)
The down side of this is that sometimes T's will not be crossed and I's will not
be dotted.
That much, I can live with. More importantly, I can fly with it as well.

Kevin Kinney

Subject: | Flange Tweaking Tool |
This is nothing earth-shattering, but I thought I'd share my flange tweaking tool
that I came up with. I'm sure there are a lot of other versions out there,
but I thought this was pretty clever, so here you go.
It's two 3/4" thick pieces of plywood with the front edges rounded to a 1/8"
radius. Sandwiched between the plywood is a piece of .032 aluminum scrap. I used
.032 because I happen to be tweaking .025 flanges. You can adjust the distance
between the plywood by placing different thickness shims between the "handles"
to hand-tweak different flanges and bends all over your project. You can
even make a second set with a different bend radius routed on the front if called
for.
It's not readily visible in the overall picture, but the aluminum shim is about
20mm shorter than the wood pieces - giving you the place to insert the flange
you're tweaking. This thing works like a charm tweaking the wing ribs that
I'm working on now. The size of this one is 150mm long x 30mm wide.
Tweak on my brothers.

Subject: | Re: Jab 3300 - Stumble during mag check solution |
Chuck, another aid to the loose distributor issue is to use varying length plastic
ties to hold the caps down. The technique is to place a long, large tie around
the neck sort of loose then use ties to strap over the cap to the neck loop.
Once everything is in place and snug then tighten the neck tie. Seems to work
after 114 hours no loose caps or any stumble. As a side issue, a mag stumble
or miss can also be fowling plugs or plug wire failure if your trouble shooting.
Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Something like this http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/topages/holecutter.php
I prefer the type that doesn't use the drill bit - it simply has a center shaft
the same size from end to end. You have to drill the pilot hole first and then
use the fly cutter. With thick stuff and a drill press you can turn it under
power otherwise the best approach is to turn it by hand and score the material.
In the attached picture I made a inspection hole by:
1.) Scoring the metal by hand with the fly cutter. This is in the leading edge
skin.
2.) Using an OLFA knife (see www.601.org) to score a line connecting the edges of the two circles.
3.) Used a step drill to enlarge one of the pilot holes large enough to insert
a nibbler tool which I used to split one end enough that I could get my pliers
on a scored edge and...
4.) Carefully worked my way around the hole, separating the the pieces I wanted
to remove.
There.... that's more of an answer than you probably wanted :-)

I ordered, received and installed 1/4"NPT to -6 AN adapters and low profile swivel

but I just can't make it fit on my center console.
Therefore, I have ordered a new Andair selector valve with banjo fittings, as suggested
by one of our listers. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi Mack,
The type we're usually talking about on this forum is a short 3/4-inch
body with a stem on one end for a drill chuck,
a hole for a 1/4-inch drill at the other with two Allen screws to hold
the drill and in the middle a square hole that allows
a beam to pass thru, be adjusted and secured with another Allen screw.
At the end of the beam, a square hole
parallel with the drill is made for an 1/8th inch tool bit that's ground
from the inside edge to obtain a hole with a
straight edge. The drill can be used to power it, but for lightening
holes in the wings or fuselage, I prefer to pre-drill
the center hole and then turn the fly-cutter by hand very slowly with
light pressure to cut a hole somewhat like a compass.
In a drill press, you can cut really good holes in an instrument panel
rather quickly. About $12.00 locally.

Chuck,
Good to see that the fix I did and passed along to you, worked. I
wasn't quite in the ".010 inch" precision mode, just taking a few swipes
with the file that was handy in the hangar; my calipers were at home and
I doubt this brain would have thought to use them. Glad you could use
the suggestion.
The L shape of the dual cap retainers lends itself to just this type of
fine tuning.
Why anyone would provide "additional" security for distributor caps with
ty-wraps is beyond me. Not exactly a confidence builder to anyone
looking under the bonnet and contemplating a flight with you. Can just
imagine what the airport bums that visit my hangar would say. Oh well,
to each his own, it is experimental.

The 22nd Annual Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven Fly-In will take place
June 20, 21, 22, 23, 2007 at the historic William T. Piper Memorial
Airport in Lock Haven, PA. The Theme will be 70 years of Piper.
Featured airplanes: J-4 and Comanche PA-24
If flying in, check out the Fly-in Air Ops at:

There are two runways in use, a paved 3500 footer and a parallel grass
strip, BUT the state aviation agency gets antsy about simultaneous
landings or takeoffs; also, many NORAD a/c in the pattern and they'll
fly all day. Only here will you be roused from your tent at 5:30 a.m.
by the sound of two or three Kinners in the pattern doing low,
wake-you-up flybys.
Wx permitting we usually get a few Zeniths to show up. Ken Lennox
should be up from MD, and Ray Blondin may have the hours flown off and
be there from DL. You NJ guys are always welcome. If the
thunderboomers hold off I'll be there but event regular Wayne Beattie
from CT is coming via motorhome.
This is a great fly-in! Flying all day long, good, inexpensive food,
free entertainment at night, Hoot Gibson as guest speaker Saturday
night, Piper Museum within an easy walk, just laid back fun for aviation
enthusiasts.

Dear Listers,
Someone on the Zenith list or RV list purchased subject GPS from ALDI
for about $60. I drove to neighboring town and found one at the ALDI
store there for $50. It was their last unit.
It is an interesting unit and can be adapted for flying. It does not
have airport database so routing has to be entered manually or input by
actually being on site. I plan on trying it out by flying to
neighboring airports and entering its respective location.
My thoughts on the unit will be made in a few months. At the price, it
has to have some value for certain missions.

It was a copy of his letter to the editor. For your convenience, here it
is:
"I have been a Flying reader for a long, long time. I want to address the
July, 2007 issue and specifically "On Top." Apparently, Richard Collins was
assigned to write a piece about a segment of aviation that he has absolutely
no use for: Light Sport. I have never read a more condescending and
disdainful appraisal of an entire segment of aviation than this one.
Richard Collins, nose in the air, totally dismissed the validity of Light
Sport aviation, the airplanes in this category and its proponents and
pilots.
With this article, Flying Magazine has succinctly defined who is NOT a part
of their readership. I am solidly in that category. Thanks for letting me
and my kind know where we stand."

I got all my stuff from Terminal Town. I was quite happy with the selection
and price. I ordered one of the kits that came with a bunch of connnectors

It makes me wonder if he has ever flown in a basic ultra-light "just for the fun
of flying". Hell, that feeling of leaving Mother Earth and being in control
cannot be described.
I can see where he may be coming from though. I am a professional musician and
people will tell me if they could play the way I do they would do it all the time.
I remember (a long time ago) when I played just for the fun of it, but after
it started bringing in money every time I sat down at the piano I thought
about all the stuff I needed to learn and "playing the piano" took on a different
light.
Now that I am an "old fart" and play when I choose, I get more satisfaction from
playing what makes me happy and I can now sit and play without thinking of "the
job". Perhaps being a professional pilot makes you think of flying in the
same way. What a sad thought.
Just a thought as I do cocktail hour and contemplate my next move!

Since you're an XL builder, you should have the DVD that is a duplicate.
The resolution of the images in the Acrobat documents on the CD is
higher than what you can get off of the web site. You can zoom in more.

I have a "built by factory" stabilator and vertical fin complete I'll
through in if you buy the rest of the kit from me. Right wing 85%, fuse
and all the rest for a great deal. $15000.00 with long range tanks and
many extras and tools. You will save 10,000.00 bucks . My wife says it's
gotta go or me go..

With this article, Flying Magazine has succinctly defined who is NOT a part of

Tim and Larry,
Thank you very much for the picture and description. In reading the thread, it
appears that this flycutter can be used on the bubble! Micheal Heintz cut a round
hole in bubble of the XL prototype, but I forgot to quiz him about his method.
Idaho gets extremely hot during the summers and I need additional air.
Thanks again for your help

Vann- I am building a 601 XL (about 60% complete) and I know many of the
building issues are similar between the 701 and the 601. Let me know if
you want to come by and look at my 601 XL project and chat. Perhaps I can
answer some questions, or we can just share experiences. I live in
Hillsborough- 10 miles west of Durham, and about a 30 minute drive from
Raleigh.

Ben, I'm almost in MN but not quite. I'm in Fort
Frances, ON. Probably a bit far North for you. There
is another builder in International Falls, MN as well.
We are both at about the same point, fuse mostly done
and starting on wings.
I seem to remember another builder in the Chisolm, MN
are who mentioned starting a CH-701 project last fall.
Sorry, I don't know of any flying 701s in MN at this
time.

I think most would agree that it is best to turn a fly cutter by hand if you
can't use it in a drill press. Same goes for cutting holes with it in sheet
aluminum.
