back when I did this kind of thing for a living, the standard practice was to cut
the hole at least 1/4" smaller than needed and drum sand to net diameter. Several
advantages here:
1. You can get the best fit diameter with the drum
2. Minimized risk of cracking the transparency
3. You can final polish the hole and "bellmouth" or flare the inner and outer edges
to minimize chances of cracks down the road.

may be of use to you. I ordered two of the Vista-Vents that require
a 2 & 1/2 inch hole and when I checked my hole saws I found that the standard
set does not have either size (2 & 1/2 or 3 & 1/2 sizes. All of the larger
hole saws in the set are even inches with no half sizes. I called the tool
department at Lowe's and was told that hole saws are available there in 1/2,
1/4, and 1/8 for all of the larger saws therefor if any of you run into the same
problem, remember you can get the 2 & 1/2 or the 3 & 1/2 inch hole saw at

Hi Lee,
I wonder if you are doing the right thing? When I looked into
propellers for the Jabiru 3300 for my XL I found warp drive props
were limited to 100 Horsepower. My initial choice for a 3300 prop is
the wood Sensenich that comes with the FWF package from Jabiru USA.

Here's another one you can try: Almost every auto parts store, and
Walmart, has an articulated plastic extension originally designed to
insert spark plugs. You bend it (the plastic pieces sort of snap into
the curve you need) around whatever's in the way, and turn the knob on
your end to rotate the inner shaft. The business end has a sleeve to
hold the spark plug. Just tape a small extension on the end, put some
sticky stuff in the socket to hold the nut, and apply to the offending
part. There's also a similar tool that ends in a 1/4 in. drive, that
works even easier.

Skip,
I did that job with the center spar section out of the airplane and on a
work table. That probably isn't an option with the quick build kit.
Anyway, I used one of those old shirt-pocket, telescoping pointers. To
that I duct-taped an open-end box wrench. To the open end wrench, I put
a small piece of duct tape on the flat which would be at the back when
inserted into the spar slot. That little piece of duct tape holds the
nut. The bolt is inserted and rotated from the outside It sounds a lot
easier than it really is! Patience, a steady hand and more patience are
an absolute necessity. A good, full set of verbal obscenities might be
helpful. Good Luck !!!

in a "tongue-in-cheek" fashion, but thats the problem with these groups, inflections
don't get put on the screen.
If the gravity press works for you, by all means use it. I tried it, but only
managed to split a set of dies made of oak. It was this experience that lead
me to the plywood solution. And you do have to admit, it IS overkill. I quickly
realized that the effort to spin a vise handle is miniscule compared to getting
out the floor jack, etc.
The point I WAS trying to make is that the amount of pressure required is actually
very low; not at all what I had initially imagined when talk of hydraulic
presses and car weights were put out here.

Listers,
Living and flying my 601HD in Georgia made me realize that "sticking a
pencil under the canopy seal" as Chris originally suggested just didn't get
it.I had not put any sort of vents in the plane when building - mistake!
My first quick and simple solution helped quite a bit. I made a simple
"scoop" that I mounted just inside the front of the cowling opening. To this
a attached a "scat tube" - same size as the cabin heat flange on the
firewall - and ran it to the cabin heat flange on the firewall after
disconnecting the duct from the heat muff. This provided a fairly decent
amount of cooling air into the cockpit, but I wasn't satisfied. Have to swap
it back for winter too!
Next I borrowed an idea from the RV folks. Since I have a joint between the
center section and outer wing panel on each side, I decided to install a
NACA scoop in the lower surface of the skin at the joint. I made my own
mould and layed up a fiberglass "scoop" for each side. To this I attached a
flexible plastic duct - my son in law scrounged it up for me - about 2" in
diameter. I routed the ducts - through lightening holes - into the cockpit
where I had mounted two of those "eyeball outlets" which can be aimed where
ever you want. The high pressure on the bottom of the wing provides a good
flow of air that can be shut off at the eyeball in winter. Drag is nil
because of the design of the NACA scoop. I did put a screen at the inlet of
the scoops to keep the bugs and critters out. Would have been easier to have
installed the NACA scoops on the fuselage side while building!!
Now if I just wasn't so lazy, I put together a "sun shade" like the Koger
one used on the RV's and some Zeniths.
I've' designed one and got all the materials to make it except the Gray
colored cloth like materal. That's been my excuse for not completing that
project.
Just thought I'd share with you what I've done. Sounds to me like a lot of
other good ideas out there. I just didn't want to put a hole on my canopy.
I've had to repair or replace too many over the years because of cracks. My
canopy on the 601HD has been flying for 545 hours over ten years without the
first crack YET! It is the side-to-side opening type.
Good building and flying guys and gals.

Yep Wade, the $50 includes both seatbelts and the shoulder belts. They are the
ones that are sent with the kit from Zenith. If you aren't planning to deviate
from the plans on the mounting points etc. they will be the correct lengths
and geometry. They are still in the boxes in which they arrived with my kit but
I'll double check them to make sure I send you the entire set.
Let me call my local UPS pickup point to check on the shipping to your door before
you send the money. I guestimated $15 but it could be a bit more or less.
I'm not in a hurry for the money and you're not in a hurry for the belts so we
have time to get it right.

If we are close enough to each other, I'd like to see your project (if that's okay
with you) and you are welcome to visit me and mine. Rayne is on I-10 about

when I know your shipping address, I'll check on UPS shipping cost and get back

I just fired up my 912 UL in a Zenith 701 for the first time yesterday.
All went well, except my VDO tach was not working. Does anyone know what
the correct DIP switch settings are? I apparently had the wrong ones set
in the tach, or at least that is where my trouble shooting will start.
Also, I taxied around for maybe about 10 minutes. In this time the oil
temp came up to about 140 degrees but I got no reading on the CHT gauge.
Is this normal, or is my CHT gauge not working? It to is the standard VDO
CHT gauge. I must say the Rotax 912 is a smooth running engine.

[quote="dredmoody(at)cox.net"]I have two muffin fans in my fuselage. There's a
4" one in the bulkhead at the rear of the baggage area that will move 35 scfm
which should actually be helpful if run a few minutes before start up or during
a prolonged taxi. I have a second one about 5" in diameter which moves 45
scfm and it is mounted in the lightening hole in the bracing channel from the
panel to the firewall. That one blows air from the lower cockpit area up past
the radio, x-ponder, and the two AF-3400 glass panel units. I intend only
on/off switches for both (no thermostat). I hooked them up to a solar panel that
a friend wants to use in his RV7-A and the result was pretty anemic. Maybe
these panels weren't the best available.

I just went out and looked at my firewall which I completed last week. The
measurements are approx the same as yours. As Craig said the top and
bottom of 6B7-2 do not line up with anything. I work on the premise that
the drawings show the relative position of the components but not their
absolute position, the measurements take care of that.

The undersurface of that skin is curved which might complicate the mounting. The
space there might be crowded too depending on your panel layout. The fan mounted
under the C-channel takes up no critical space and holes in the top sking
would still activate your planned defogger action.

George,
Congratulations on getting your engine running. I have a 80 HP Rotax in
my 601HD. I'm afraid I can't help much with the VDO tach. It must be
different than the one I have because there were no Dip swithches that
needed to be set. When I built mine ZAC couldn't advise me as to the
wiring on my tach. They said if it didn't work, to swap the wires. I
lucked out, it worked the first time. I have the large diameter tach.
As for the VDO CHT, yes from my experience if your engine got warm
enough to register an increase in the oil temp, you should hace seen an
increase in your CHT. 10 minutes should be more than enough to see an
increase in both oil temp ( normally up to about 120 degrees F ) and CHT
up to about 170 to 180 degrees after 10 minutes of ground run. )
I'm helping a friend install a 80Hp Rotax in a new 701. I'd be
interested in hearing any problems you encounter and your soutions so
that we can gain from your experiences. We're working on the engine
installation now.
Thanks.

I just fired up my 912 UL in a Zenith 701 for the first time
yesterday. All went well, except my VDO tach was not working. Does
anyone know what the correct DIP switch settings are? I apparently had
the wrong ones set in the tach, or at least that is where my trouble
shooting will start. Also, I taxied around for maybe about 10 minutes.
In this time the oil temp came up to about 140 degrees but I got no
reading on the CHT gauge. Is this normal, or is my CHT gauge not
working? It to is the standard VDO CHT gauge. I must say the Rotax 912
is a smooth running engine.

install in in the top skin under the canopy and let it pull air over the

This could also create a defogger for the canopy.

Won't the magnet in the fan motor disrupt the magnetic compass?

Depends on where I put the compass. Which in my case will be a vertical card compass
in the panel.

Can't speak for Gig but in my panel, the fan below the avionics won't likely be
a problem except for electronic noise, which I hope will be minimal.
The whiskey compass will be glued to the inside of the canopy bubble away from
the glass panel screens etc. The EFIS uses a remotely mounted magnetometer which
is away from all the ferrous metal and electrical wires.

Shocked, shocked!
Original source: "Casablanca" (Motion picture: Warner Brothers, 1942)
Events at Rick's Cafe Americain have become uncomfortable for Casablanca's
Vichy government: Freedom fighter Victor Laszlo has led employees and
patrons in a rendition of "La Marseillase" to drown some boisterous German
soldiers singing "Die Wacht am Rhein." Major Strasser orders the happily
corrupt Vichy constable Renault to find a reason to shut Rick's down. When
asked by Rick what's going on, Renault replies, "I am shocked! shocked! to
find that there is gambling going on here!" At that moment a croupier
presents Renault with his own gambling winnings, which he politely accepts.
Usage: In a year-end piece recalling the revelation that many of Chicago's
aldermen, policemen and city officials had accumulated thousands of unpaid
parking tickets, the Chicago Reader recalled that; "The mayor (Richard M.
Daley) was shocked, shocked to learn that so many trusted elected officials
and civil servants were taking the city for a ride. He was even more shocked
that city clerk Jim Laski blew the whistle." "Uncivil Servants," Dec. 27,
1996. Sec. I, p. 25.
Often used to refer to someone, often a government official, or Zenith
Lister who professes outrage at some unsavory activity performed by another,
yet of which he himself is often guilty or obviously has full knowledge.
>From CasaBlanca:
Rick: (played by Bogart) How can you close me up? On what grounds?
Captain Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in
here!
[a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]
Croupier: Your winnings, sir.
Captain Renault: [sotto voce] Oh, thank you very much.
[aloud]
Captain Renault: Everybody out at once!
Best Regards,
Randy, Las Vegas

Hi Guy=92s and Ben, I have been apart of a few DVD=92s for
Homebuilthelp.com, I just want to make sure that everyone knows that I
in no way have been or ever will be financially re-imbursed for the time
I spent in Jon=92s video=92s or in the sale of any of Homebuilthelp.com
video=92s. Jon is a great person and he has some great idea=92s to help
builders out. However, this is how Jon makes a living and continues to
grow his video catalog, sales of the DVD=92s are to a specific clientele
and not a very large group. Therefore, I would ask all to consider, not
loaning, or if you are going to loan one out try to get a promise from
the fellow that he will buy one from Jon, in the future.
It is the little guy thing, Jon does not sell millions, thousands or
even hundreds, Jon sells one DVD at a time. From this, he invests in new
series of DVD=92s and covers his basic living costs.
Ben, I=92m glad your getting help and able to buy your own DVD=92s. A
lot
goes into those productions, not acting of course (at least not on my
end), makeup or flashy graphics. Just honest to goodness knowledge being
shared.

Subject: | Re: Cutting a hole in plexiglass (heat in cockpit) |
One of my concerns is air movement while flying. I assume some of the air that
comes in via the cool air scoops escapes around the canopy seal, but I wonder
if that is enough. An opening in the rear baggage area bulkhead would vent into
the tailcone which I'm thinking would be an area of slight negative pressure.
That might be enough to help cool air (and heat in the winter) move thru
the cockpit. You could even build a vent into the underside of the fuselage if
you wanted to. You could also follow Mark's advice and take it a little farther
with the muffin fans. I haven't made my decision yet.
I think a canopy cover with a reflective outer surface would be a good item to
use while parked outside in the sun.

OH No.
My top lines up and the bottom is out by 10mm.. I think I will need to check every
measurement again as I dont want to progress with my top Longerons if I have
to make a new Firewall. The main thing would be the Engine bolt locations for
the engine mount as they are the critcal items..

Or "At or above 10,000 feet MSL over the 48 contiguous states or the
District of Columbia, excluding that airspace below 2,500 feet AGL"
Of course as a sport pilot I'm supposed to be below 10,000 feet. I think
I'll go back to balloons or switch to gliders.

Chris - I think you will be fine. As others have said, there doesn't seem
to be anything too critical about the height of the rear channel. Mine is
relatively close to lined up at the bottom, which means the rear channel is
higher than the L-angle at the top (whereas others have obviously said
theirs doesn't line up at top or bottom). The reason I think you will be
fine is that the place I did have a little trouble was in that my engine
mounts were really tight against the bottom flange of the rear channel. I
would have liked to have another few mm room. You have that room b/c your
rear channel is lower than mine. I would also point out that the photo
guide shows plenty of room between the flange of the channel and the engine
mount - so yours (as opposed to mine) seems to be better.

p.s. I tried to send this direct, but your email doesn't seem to valid. Any
idea what gives?

Hi all,
Came in tonight from working on my 701 because I hit a road block. When I
checked my email I saw the post requesting info on the horizontal stab angle of
incidence. This is what I needed to know also, except for a 701. After
reading the reply about the info for the 601 being on the Zenith web site I went
and looked for the 701 info for a couple of hours with no luck.
Sooooo.... please forgive me but is the stab on the 701 installed parallel
to the top longeron as it is on the 601? Guys I really looked everywhere I
could think of.

I'd like to say the chat is a fantastic idea, and I would invite anyone with an
interest in Zenith aircraft to participate. We found a couple of highly motivated
builders from the Matronics list who don't have the benefit of nearby Zenith
builders or EAA Technical Counselors to mentor them or provide much-needed
guidance. You might be just the person they need to chat with.
I'll look forward to next Monday's session. Thanks, everyone!

Wayne,
Take a look at 7H3, upper right corner. It shows that the front and
rear stab brackets are to be mounted 135mm above ref line A-E. A little
anomoly here.. those brackets are 135mm tall themselves, so that means
they are to be located right on line A-E... but that cannot work as that
imaginary line (A-E) is lower than the top of the fuse, so I believe
that means to mount the brackets right at the top of the fuse. Of
course, it then needs to be adjusted so that each tip is equal distance
from a common point near the front of the fuse (like the 601), and also
so that when viewing from the rear of the plane, it matches the 'level'
of your wings (I wait til the wings are rigged before final drilling,
just my personal choice).

Wayne.
The horiz stab is mounted 135mm from the top of the fuse to the top of the stab.
You first level the fuse as per instructions on the drawings. Remember the
fuse is bowed and you can't just put a level on the top and call it good. Then
you level the stab in two directions, front to back and side to side, this
you can use a level for. Then like Jon says, adjust the stab to be 90 degrees
with the center line of the fuse. Like Jon I used a string to a central point
on the front of the fuse. Then drill your mounting holes.
