Subject: | Any Flying 601s in the Denver area? |
I'm heading out to Denver today for about a week and wondered if there any flying
601s out there?
I'll also be going to the Rocky Mt. Fly-in on Sunday. So if you'd not mind me stopping
by and seeing your plane (I'll spring for some gas if you want to take
me up) or are at the fly-in on Sunday my cell phone number is 870-665-1677.
PS. Somebody already e-mailed me that they were going to be at the fly-in and I've
lost the e-mail so wo ever you are give me a call.

Subject: | wheel pants speed |
hi list
i checked the archives and did not find any real
answer to the questions of speed increases by having
wheel pants.
i actually like to see the wheels on pre-flight. also
be able to put air in the tires without undue trouble,
therefore, has any 601 flyers really noticed an
increase in speed and if so, how much. for my part, a
couple of knots increase in not worth not being able
to really preflight the aircraft landing system.
however, 4 plus would be worth it to me. the extra
couple of knots in a two hour flight is pretty
meaningless, especially if you use gps and plan your
route well, and when sight seeing, the speed is a non
issue.

Subject: | airfoil coordinates? |
Does anyone on this list have the original coordinatrs to lay out the airfoil on
the XL? If so, could you scan the table and e-mail it to me please. The drawings
at CH601.org are for the form blocks and I want to lay out the complete as
developed airfoil.
Thank you.

Subject: | Re: Wings options |
I don't know from first hand experience but. I discussed the pros and cons
of the flex skin hinge and actual hinges on the ailerons with both Gus of
Flycorvair and Mark Townsend of Can-Zac. The Flycorvair "Zenvair" was
initially built with flex skin. They later changed out to hinges. Gus said
that the hinges provided more responsiveness with less stick pressure than
the flex skin. The flex skin has a tendency to want to center the stick,
causing a little bit more stick pressure to move it. That's pretty much what
Mark said too. However, Mark stated that the flex skin will fly more "hands
off" where the hinges requires a little more attention to the stick. He said
that if you intend to fly cross country most of the time, use flex skin. If
you just want to just "play around" the hinges will give you more
responsiveness. Take this as second hand information. However, if you think
of it, those statements make sense. I'd like to hear other opinions.
As for the long range tanks, my personal opinion is that you don't have to
fill them up every flight. If you need to save weight, make more stops. If
you want to fly cross country, carry less baggage. What's the empty weight
difference of the short range tanks verses the long range tanks? The same
train of thought can be used with the baggage lockers.
Guys, please correct me if I am thinking wrong.

hello hans
i fly a 601 xl but is was RTF from CZAW (my allready second xl) for the wing lockers
you should denfintly build then they are so hand for the extra space.
If you consider a BRS the standard installation on the CZAW build planes is on
the RH Front on the co pilots side. so no restrictions for baggage room
we in Germany have to use a rescue system it is compulsory for us here.
for more info please contact me.
if you install a rotax 912s you can fly approx 6hrs with the 90ltr tanks but it
is nice to have more incase you can buy fuel cheap

Subject: | 601XL Sub-Kits For Sale |
With much regret, I need to sell my 601XL project.
The following sub-kits were purchased from Zenith:
Tail Kit
Wing and Aileron/ Flaps Kit
Fuel System Kit
Aileron Trim Tab Kit
Very little work has been completed on the project, and I will seperate the tail
kit from the others if necessary. Price is firm at 10% below Zenith list
price
Contact me off line for further details.

Subject: | Re: wheel pants speed |
*John,
After designing my own wheel pants, replacing the Zenith torpedoes. I
got more of an increase at cruise than
top end. These are larger fairings than what's seen on the XL with 5"
wheels, so you probably would not see that
much a difference. I now fly 17 degree pitch and top out at 133 but
have no data without wheel fairings for this pitch.
(from my journal) In any case you'll be faster than this with or
without fairings in an XL.
June 19* Father's day was a calm and sunny morning. I went to the hangar
and did a thorough preflight inspection, topped off the plane with
87-octane fuel and checked the wheel fairings. I took off from runway
31, climbed 80 mph at 4800 rpm with the propeller set at 16-degrees. The
rudder and elevator inputs seemed a little slippery. I leveled off at
3000 ft to an ambient temperature of 76-degrees. At 4000-rpm the plane
eased past 100 mph, at 4200-rpm, airspeed climbed to 105, at 4450-rpm
airspeed passed 110 and 4700-rpm brought it to 115 mph, and 5100-rpm put
airspeed just over 125, and more importantly, all engine temperatures
stayed within limits. I ran the four main compass headings on the GPS
with these settings and came back to average these. After spending a
little more time in realistically evaluating past performance, the pitot
driven airspeed seems to be within 1 mph or dead accurate with the GPS.
I believe there's not more than 3 mph gained at top end, but there's a
6-mph improvment in mid-range cruise between 4200 to 4800-rpms. In any
case, the plane performed really well, but for what seemed like a faster
approach and longer rollout. To get a better handle on that, the
fairings will stay on until it's time to paint.
Good luck,

I'm in the process of putting the brake lines in my 701. I have drilled a hole
in the cabin floor as noted on the bottom diagram page 7-F-9 and installed a
grommet. The problem is the bend required to make the brake line go under the
seat, through this hole, and around to the back side of the main landing gear
spring is quite a sharp bend. It seems like this sharp bend will eventually
stress out the brake line. (I have the 'old' style gear spring that attaches
onto forks).
I'm thinking about installing two 90 degree elbows - one above and one below the
cabin floor, to make a 'Z' bend. Has anyone else tried this or has a better
suggestion how to handle this? If the 'Z' bend works, how can I secure the elbows
to the cabin floor?
Thanks,
Dan Ginty

That would be a combination of the nose rib, rear ribs and aileron/flap. Do you
have the prints?
