Subject: | Re: 701 unusable fuel |
I am not familiar with the 701 but am planning to install a baffle plate withthe
one way swinging flap/check valves in my XL tanks. These are used extensively
in large(er) jets to persuade the remaining fuel volume to remain inboard.
Chuck,
Mine are the same measured at 42.5 litres aside = 10.86 US gal each. I have unported
the outlet when running off the tank in nose low and wing down attitudes
where the fuel level was lower than 1/4, so I am cautious about feeding off the
one side if the level is less than about 12 litres (3 gal) and switch to both
for landings. I have cruised on one tank down to 1/8 without problems. The
5 times the engine shutdown were all during manouvers with lots of wing down nose
down descent, and it recovered when the I levelled out, after a delay maybe
20 seconds. In some cases I switched tanks. Have not encountered this in normal
landing approaches, but nowadays I select both for landing with low levels
as an undershoot is not a satisfactory option. Suppose you could add a forward
outlet port and tee it lower down like some Cessnas, or make a larger gascolator
Zenair style as its like a little header tank ( I have the ACS type )

This reply is not meant to replace the call to ZAC but a 1" hole at that location,
if made with uniform circularity and with a polished edge should be invisible
to the structure. If concerned, flange the hole 1/4" x 45.
Working on wiring up my left wing (601XL) and I bought this nylon wire conduit
from the Van's site. I'd like to keep it out of the wing locker area if possible
and also clear of the two aft rear rib holes for the aileron cables. I'm thinking
of routing the conduit at the point recommended on 6-LLO-1, 480mm aft of
the spar and 40mm down from the top flange of the rear rib. See the pic attached.
My question is will this area support a hole large enough for my conduit
(about 7/8") without negatively impacting the structure of the rear rib. I may
call ZAC tomorrow to get their input, but I'm sure someone has been down this
path before. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion Ron. This need is for completely different reason. Does
anyone know if the coordinates for that airfoil are in Ribletts book? I hate
to spend $20 for something that I believe I already paid ZAC for...
As I recall having layed out the forms, the rear rib line becomes a straight line
towards the rear. If you are using a cad system maybe try placing the radius
of the rear flap/aileron at the correct distance/orentation from the spar and
join it to the rear ribs using straight lines to that radius in 3D space.
I know nothing about designing airfoils so. . . FWIW

I installed the flaperonson my 701 last weekend and I am thinking about an
alternative to the "quick release" fittings that are attached to the ends
of the flaperons and connect them to the push rods. Since I don't plan on
removing the wings I don't need the quick release feature. Has anyone
replaced this fitting with something else? I am thinking about another
rod end bearing and a bolt, perhaps.

I made some aluminum L's, bent them into J's riveted them to the ribs
and cable tied my conduit to the J's, exactly where your conduit is routed
in the pic.

Subject: | Wheel pants/speed 601 |
We have recently finished our 601SL and put on pants, at the recommendation
of a friend who has built 4/5 planes, the latest an Esqual. He flew his
first without pants and checked speeds in various configurations. He then
added pants, and gained 10 knots in both climb and cruise. We have not
flown ours without them, so can't give you a direct comparison with the 601.
We had a problem checking air pressure and adding air, so we Dremel'd out a
curve on the valve side of each wheel. Works fine, and looks ok, too.

Subject: | Re: Nylon Conduit Routing in Wing |
Thanks to everyone for their replies. This is certainly a helpful group and I'm
glad to be in this builder community. I did call ZAC today. Advice was that maybe
my 7/8" conduit was too large for what I'd be running thru it. Zac takes
the approach of bundling the wires and pitot tubes together with zip ties and
routing thru the same point in the rear ribs, but with a hole that's a half inch
in diameter. They recommended keeping the edge of any hole in the rib at least
20mm from the lightening hole and top flange.
Regards,
Dave
