Subject: | Killing Off the Dynon Keep-Alive |
This is useful info for all folks with Dynons in their Zeniths. (Aside: I
love my Dynon and their support is top notch! But, I'm always suspicious of
something that wants to "trickle" off the battery. It can trickle the
battery to death.) Note that Dynon expects to have a new software release
out for all products by the end of the month.
Here's the problem:
My D180 was installed by AMD in my AMD-made Zodiac CH601XL in October of
2006. Honestly, I do not know how long the 1st backup battery lasted, but at
the 50 hour checkup it was dead, so AMD replaced it. Now, 60 days later, the
2nd backup battery is dead. It reads zero volts on the panel and the D-180
goes off with the master switch. The plane is regularly flown several hours
a week, so according to the specs the battery should have had plenty of time
to charge *even if* the keep alive is not connected, but the keep alive is
connected.
<http://dynonavionics.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?action=viewprofile;username=Fderfler><http://dynonavionics.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?action=mailto;user=Fderfler><http://dynonavionics.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?action=imsend;to=Fderfler>
TO the credit of Dynon, I received a prompt and useful reply:
Dynon Technical SupportPosts: *
"We've had a few little bugs with the D180's battery charging system. We
spent a bunch of time with it over the last few months and really hope the
firmware update that is just about to come out will fix all of this. We did
tweak it in the last update too, which made it better, but it didn't fix
everyone's issues. We'd suggest waiting for this next update (hopefully on a
few days away), installing it, and seeing if it fixes the problem and
charges the battery. It's highly likely that the battery is fine, it's just
not charged up. Also, as a side note, it's almost always keep alive that
causes the problem, so if you can pull a fuse or anything for keep alive,
that will probably fix the problem as well, and you should see the battery
start to charge at the next power-up. "

The only explanation I can think of is that the pilot/builder must have used
green scotchbrite. The stuff has been rumored to drastically slow down the
broadcast signal from ELTs.

Maybe we should carry rope ladders for climbing down from trees when we land
in them along with our hammers for busting out the canopy in case we flip o

off and add a couple more fuel pumps just in case we have vapor lock, and a

Sounds like another good reason to install the next generation of ELTs.
side from the satellite location being tighter (25 square nm vs. 500 square
m) the higher power pulsed output is more likely to punch through a foliage
anopy:
"Unlike the 121.50Mhz ELT, which transmits a continuous 100mW signal, the
06Mhz ELT transmits a whopping five watts for every 50 seconds for one-half
econd. Because the system isn't always transmitting, battery life is fairly
ong. Transmitting in short bursts allows the satellite to track up to 90
LTs at once."

I have removed the warp drive prop from my 601 and found some
evidence of fretting. It is on a Dave Johnson PRSU and calls for 8 X
1.25 mm bolts. These bolts are quit loose in the prop hub (lots of side
play). Also I am not sure of the class of the bolt. The metric
equivalent of SAE grade 8 is 10.9 but the bolt heads don't indicate
this. I feel rather uneasy about the situation does anybody have some
helpful suggestions?

Hi Alex,
I'd be inclined to forward your discussion of this to the Warp Drive
people. They would likely
want to support you and offer advice and or replacement product from
their experiences.
Their support is excellent and rather unconditional.
You fly their prop, they will want to support you.

The upholstery in my 701 has a problem. The seat cushion and seat back are held
in with 1 1/2 inch Velcro strips. The Velcro is sewn on to the back of the seat
cushion and seat back, no problem there. But the Velcro on the aircraft is
only GLUED to the aluminum. So every time I want to take the seats out half of
the Velcro that is glued to the aluminum pulls loose from the aluminum. Is there
a better way to PERMINENTLY attach the Velcro to the aluminum? Any suggestions

Kudos here to Zenith for getting their on-line parts ordering running
pretty smoothly.
My first attempt to order parts, about 2 months ago, resulted incorrect
parts and numbers of parts being shipped and incorrect charges.
Last Thursday, I on-line ordered a replacement part (Yes, I misdrilled
it...). Got a e-mail confirmation and e-receipt nearly immediately and
a shipping confirmation the same day. Got the part on Monday and went
back to work!
Note that replacement parts seem to come from a standard kit BOM. They
may (probably won't) have any of the additional work that might have
been done in a QB kit.

I am still working on 601HD/Corvair project and would like to know what type of
tubing is being used from the carb to the intake manifold, e.g., aluminium, thin-wall
steel, or thin-wall stainless. I had Burns Stainless 6061 U-bends welded

Do some people get uptight because several airplanes of one type crash.
Happens all the time with certified airplanes. And like them, most Zodiac

we used to bond new Velcro to aluminum using EC1300 (possibly similar to 3M weatherstrip
adhesive?). Make sure to cut the corners/ends to as perfect a radius
as possible. Apply the adhesive in a continuous coating to both the velcro back
and the aluminum. After drying, re-activate the dried coating with MEK and
clamp in blocks/rub down. Allow ample time to ensure total fixturing before attempting
to separate. Note that this technique does not work with Velcro that
has the adhesive coating (shiny layer) already on the back side.
Can you put some rivets in it? Especially at the ends.

Perhaps a couple of wire staples in each piece would do it.
Make them out of house wire, like number 12. Just bend them into staples the
width that would fit, drill holes to fit, bend the legs into place to secure
the Velcro to the aluminum.
Staples like this are removable, strong and have a low profile with no sharp
edges showing. The aluminum wire might be strong enough for this use.

I'm certainly no expert on this subject, but I have read a column by John
Deakin that addresses this issue. Deakin's position is that we should all
determine by flight test just exactly how much usable fuel is available in
each tank of our aircraft. See:
http://www.avweb.com/news/pelican/182044-1.html
It makes sense to me. If and when I finish my 601, I plan to do exactly
what he suggests. Deakin seems knowledgeable, thoughtful, and smart. I find
his columns great reading. See
http://www.avweb.com/news/pelican/list.html
for list of columns.
