I picked up about 100 RPM more and about 5 mph increas e in speed as the engine broke in. I now have about 130 hours on it and it is performing flawlessly. The people at fly-ins and at my local field alw ays comment on the climb performance. It is excellent. I built my engine in William's hangar, and finished my plane in his hangar before there was flywithgus.com. It was a great experience and I recommend it to anyone. William has always done the right thing by me, and he alway s has an answer for problems when they arise. Attend his presentations at Sun-n-Fun or Oshkosh, attend a Corvair College and see for yourself. The C orvair engine is not for everyone, but it is working out well for me any my family.Phil Maxson 601XL/Corvair Northwest New Jersey From: craig@craigandjean.comTo: zenith-list@matronics.comSubject: RE: Zenit h-List: Re: Zenith 601XL and Corvair EngineDate: Wed, 27 Jun 2007 23:08:51 -0600 These are the numbers for Phil Maxson's 601XL (from the archives): "Corvair, 164 cubic inch, front start, WW conversion, Elison EFS-3A Carb Wa rp Drive Prop, Set to 8.5 degrees Empty Weight: 777 pounds Gross Weight: 13 20 pounds Cruise Speed: 125 mph, 3100 rpm, Std atmospheric conditions, gros s weight Fuel Burn: 5.5 gph Other factors: nose wheel, no wheel pants, no b rake line fairings, no fairing on the steps Climb: 1200 fpm. This is the fi rst set-up I've tried. I want to put on wheel pants and fairings this winte r, as well as change the prop pitch a little. The climb performance is over whelming, but I believe it is robbing me of top end performance. I am also interested in using an Sensenich wood prop, but I don't know when that will happen." <> _________________________________________________________________ Make every IM count. At these shipping costs my 601XL is getting more expensive each day .The shipping cost is determined by the price of the order and not by weight I was told by AS .Maybe it is time to rebel , like it would do some good . That way you can consolidate your orders and hopefully reduce the shipping costs. If you get to SunNFun , AirVenture or a Regional Fly-In you can pick up the parts while you're there anyway. Takes planning though. I live within 40 miles of A/C Spruce East, but at todays gasoline prices, it costs more to drive over to pick up the parts than it does to order online and have the parts shipped to the house. When I built my 601HD in 1995 / 1996 the kit came with a fairly complete hardware parts box as well as all the airplane parts. I still had to buy a lot of parts through the mail. Maybe I don't want to know how much freight charges I paid over the entire project! Hang in there Wade and plan ahead as much as you can and do the best you can. Hey, the UPS and FedEX folks have to make a living too. do not archive Jim Hoak ----- Original Message ----- From: wade jones To: zenith-list@matronics.com Sent: Friday, June 29, 2007 5:46 PM Subject: Zenith-List: Is it time to rebel Hello group ,just got this small order delivered today and the shipping cost was $9.12 . If left to my own imagination, I'm sure I can come up with something but I'd appreciate the opportunity to see what some of you have done. If you have some useful photos and/or hints, please..... hook a brother up. It pays to be careful with shipping expenses. With Aircraft Spruce there are many shipping options. I usually choose first class mail (USPS) since this is the least expensive and generally the fastest method for shipping small orders like the one in your picture. That is one area I would want to keep track of.
