    From: "DaveG601XL" <david.m.gallagher@ge.com>
I am building my 601XL center console and am going to use the fuel system pretty much as shown in drawing 6-K-2 with minor changes. One is that I would like to add an extension to the ZAC supplied Andair selector valve to drop the valve closer to the floor while keeping the knob on the console. A second change is with the gascolator. It looks to me like a big old target hanging out under the cockpit floor for dirt and rocks. I was either thinking of mounting it a bit higher up (but still keeping it the low point in the system), or building some type a fairing around it. If anybody has done something similar with their fuel selector or gascolator installation, I would appreciate some tips and photos. Thank you, -------- David Gallagher 601 XL, tail and wings completed, working on fueslage. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=122495#122495

Take a look here for Matt Archer's fuel selector: www.zodiacxl.com/Brake%20and%20Fuel%20system.htm Also, in a 601XL/Corvair FWF the standard location for the gascolator (typically Andair's) is low on the engine side of the firewall, co-pilot's side. I used the Aircraft Spruce fuel valve - http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/whfsv.php I took 3/8" brass stock and added an extension. I suppose you could machine it, but I made mine with a hacksaw, drill & file. It's not as pretty as the Andair, but I can use the other $150 I saved to make really nice labels. hanging the gascolator there is nothing new in Euroipe. If you look closely at the Scottish Aviation Bulldog line, they have the GHascltor right where Mr. Heintz designed it. IN theory you could just put a good fuel filter in line, and forgo it. I stayed simple and put right where they designed. On the bulldog, they even designed a fairing, looks pretty good. Maybye one of us could mold one one day when not flying. Dave: We wanted more knee room, and were not enamored with the center console, so we built a box over the valve on the floor and got a nice place to run all of the wires, hoses, etc. If you are not too far along, you might consider it. ZAC agreed that the center console was not necessary. Also check out the fireproof Nomex boot for the steering rod, and the extra aluminum on the floor to make the carpeting simpler................ http://www.sonar100.com/wiring%20tunnel.jpg http://www.sonar100.com/wiring%20tunnel%202.jpg Fred Sanford 601XL Santa Barbara, Ca. do not archive

As owner of a sliding canopy, I say "beware". They are difficult to keep sliding easily. Any distortion of the airframe, say in an incident, and they don't slide at all. Even a small situation causing dust/sand to get in the tracks jams them. Spitfire pilots always opened the canopy before landing. I wish I had. Dave Austin 601HDS - 912, Spitfire Mk VIII

I thought the entire email list might derive some benefit from my answer to the 5- versus 40-hour Phase I question. I registered the airplane as Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA) instead of Experimental Amateur Built (E-AB). The E-AB registration would have required the 40 hour Phase I flight testing but would have allowed me to perform annual condition inspections. As E-LSA I needed to take the special 16-hour FAA approved course to allow me to perform annual condition inspections ON ANY E-LSA that I currently own or own in the future. I found a nice Aluminum half-teardrop fairing in a junk pile at Sun & Fun 2006 - he had a bunch of them. I plan to mount it so that it acts as a deflector without restricting access to the gascolator drain. Something like that would be easy to make in fiberglass.... just make a form out of clay and lay up a few layers of glass with epoxy resin.
