Hello,
But these countersinks are made in the 1/4 in thick aluminum,
I made them using a sharp woodworking countersunk in the drill
press and they came out fine. I managed to control the "chatter"
by picking a slow speed and controlling the pressure. I don't
think a microstop is needed in this material, the proper depth
can easily be measured and there is no danger of drilling too
deep.

I would rather make a louvre for the Oil radiator, as in my experience it takes
forever to get to 50 degree C oil temp before take off, whereas the water temp
comes up quickly, well certainly on my 912S

Use an oil thermostat and your temps will come up quickly. I believe Van's

Guys,
I have a big problem! My canopy developed a crack and spread too far before
I could drill a stop hole. It looks like I will have to buy another canopy.
Before I call Zenith, I thought I would seek advise about where I can get
the best deal on one of these. I have another builder coming over this
afternoon to look ovr the situation! Any advise?

I have the same problem, cracked it before getting around to starting
installation. Obviously they are far more fragile than I suspected. I left
mine rolled for a long time and then unrolled it to avoid it taking a "set".
This was a mistake, because it is far more flexible than I would have
thought and does not seem to take a set at all. Anyway, on the advise of
others previously, I'm currently planning to order one from TODD'S.

there is a MAJOR issue here: the included angle of the "wood working" csk and the
AN426/MS20426 are not at all compatible. This is the worst condition in a driven
flush head rivet of all the possible error conditions. The rim of the rivet
head is seated but the head to shank region is gapped - and awful (and blind
to inspect until after failure) condition structurally.

No advice here, just a related question. Since I experienced a few small, short
cracks that I had to stop drill and backfill, I am doubtful of how long my plexiglass
canopy will go before I have to replace it. Does Todd's Canopies offer
a Lexan canopy for the 601XL? Lexan is a lot easier to work with in my limited
experience and is much more resistant to cracking and scratching. If Zenith
had offered it as an option, I would have gone that route from the beginning.

I just talked to Todd. He said his conopies are much thicker and

and weighs about 2-1/2 pounds more than the ZAC canopy. He can make one
and have it on the way in a couple of days. Anyone know the current ZAC
canopy price?

Hi Ed,
I agree with you that Lexan (polycarbonate) plastic would be easier
to form into a canopy than Plexiglas (acrylic). Unfortunately, Lexan
scratches very easily. For use in optical situations like this, it
is common practice to "Hard Coat" polycarbonate with
polyurethane. This is a process I have not found available for small
runs like our canopies. Without it, the canopy would quickly become
unusable since you won't be able to see through all the scratches.

Subject: | Service Slow Down from Aircraft Spruce. |
Apparently Aircraft Spruce has a new policy for shipping orders via
USPS. In this case (by far the least expensive method of shipping
small orders) they now take two business days to process the order
instead of one. They prepare it on the first day and get it to the
post office on the second day. This is a big reduction in service,
in my experience, since they used to process and ship USPS orders in
the same day up to now.
Perhaps they don't have any competition?

For the record, Brown Tool came to the rescue again. I just ordered the #21 pilot
100 degree countersink (CC021) for $4.95 and the standard cage microstop (CC01-USA)
for $21.95. John was very helpful, and I expect to be doing more business
with them in the future.
Thanks again to the list for solid advice.

Hi Joe,
The cracked canopy may be used as a template for trimming and spotting
holes and edges could it not?
Might for this reason be best to use a canopy from Zenith again. You'd
probably want to ask what grade of acrylic
plastic they're using as well or if they've gone to a more durable
material recently. Plastics keep changing and you
may have the opportunity to improve the available product. Cost would
be the lesser of concerns at this point I think.
During the process,
Remember to use small diameter hose segments around the screws when they
go thru the plastic and manually break
all hole edges both sides with a relatively new countersink. Don't
over-tighten, etc. Study the crack to determine what
caused it before starting over. Hope you have better luck next round.
I remember sweating bullets when I did mine.
Good luck,

Last thoughts on canopies: Safety is paramount. A slider is convenient and
cool, but may leak and be drafty. The "flip top" and side hinge have their
drawbacks in high wind. I will confess to some formal training at Arizona State
(Sun Devil U) way back in the last century. I was a military pilot then and Uncle
Sam wanted me to be involved with R&D. The focus was on aircraft crash
survival issues. Some notes on the 601XL: There is NO roll over protection such
as a
reinforced windshield bow or 4130 structure behind the seats. This adds
weight but would be desirable for several reasons. Protects your head bone and
allows shoulder restraints to properly lead UP and aft to an anchor. Not off your
shoulders and down like some designs. (RV8.) That design guaranties two broken
collar bones in a crash. You still need a fire ax or break out tool
(screwdriver) to bust out. The rudder survives some roll overs although not designed
for that. The BD5 swing up/back type shares the same draw backs. It was also
used on a production twin, The WING Derringer now hq'ed in Mobile, AL. Years ago,
watched some nerd in a Schweitzer 1-26 (side hinge canopy) land down wind and
go over on his back. There was no post crash fire. We group of rubberneckers
pushed it back upright and he could then open the canopy. It weighs about
350lbs empty. No damage. None. Well, some paint. The best way to leave an A/C in
a
hurry is through a side door or hatch. One on each side would be great.
(Ercoupe, Swift, Cessna) Just some thoughts.

When I built my ultralight, the kit came with a sheet of Lexan which I bent over
the frame and trimmed to fit. That windshield is still in very decent condition
despite residing in a dusty hanagr infested with birds which build nests 24/7
all summer long.
The few scratches that have happened over the last four years have been where my
gps and the corners of the panel rub on the inside surface. I think they might
be remedied with the micro mesh technique but since they aren't in the critical
field of view, I haven't bothered. I don't think my sheet of Lexan had any
special treatment so maybe it would be such a bad deal after all.

Hey guys,
I was putting firesleeve on my fuel lines in the engine compartment and was searching
google for an easier way to do it.
I was struggling with a 1 1/2 foot length to get it on the hose and was wondering
how the hell I was going to get it on the 3 foot
piece from the gascolator to the fuel pump on my rotax. I found this tip on the
RV list and figured I'd pass it on to you guys
when you're there one day.
......old mechanic showed me how to install firesleeve with compressed air. ?
I was working at the Cessna service hanger in Wichita back in the late 70's. ?
?
I was a young A&P at the time and had been struggling with the firesleeve on ?
an oil hose for at least 15 minutes. ?
This guy comes over to me and say's "let me show you a trick". I said ?
"please". ?
?
He takes a air hose with a blow nozzle, sticks it up in one end of the fire ?
sleeve and tells me to put the other end on the oil hose. ?
He tells me to get it started and then put my hand around it and squeeze to ?
trap the air inside. By controlling the amount of air you let out, the ?
firesleeve expands and the extra air escaping makes the firesleeve slide on ?
like a hockey puck on an air table. I was amazed and remember it like it was ?
yesterday. ?
?
Hope this helps someone. ?
?
Mark Burns??
I have to say this works great!
I also found that if you use a 16 gauge piece of wire and a barbed coupler(has
barbs on both sides to connect 2 pieces of hose)
Tie a knot in one end of the 16 gauge wire and run it thru the barbed coupler,
put the coupler on the hose with the knot going
in first, run the wire thru the firesleeve and pull the hose thru the firesleeve,
its alot easier to pull it thru than push it!
I used a little extra? fuel hose and just cut the coupler off.
I would like to put some high temp RTV on the ends of the fire sleeve, for dirt
oil getting into the soft inside.
Will it have any bad effects on the goodyear rubber hose from Zenith? I know recently
that Rotax replaced some
preinstalled hoses on some engines that had them(mine didn't) for somthing related
to this.
Checked the archives but did not find any archived messages related to this, although
it was mentioned recently.
The firesleeve is installed already so the RTV seems the best choice right now.
Thanks for all the great help.

Gig,
No, that wasn't me. It was most likely Mike or Ron.
The last event I attended was the Cloverdale fly in with my wife. They only

Members,
Those of you who live in the south as I do are well aware of the
extremes of heat we experience during the summer months and when taxiing
or doing your power-on pre-flight the heat becomes unbearable. The
block you see in the picture I have enclosed is an item I dreamed up to
keep the heat down during all ground operations in my ZodiacXL. Even
with one of the Koger sun shades the cockpit gets very hot on the
ground.

Before I give those bandits at MSC a $10 "Handling" charge to ship a
1 oz bottle, does anyone know of a national auto or hardware store that
carries the Loctite 620 recommended for putting Corvair parts together?
No luck with Advance, Auto Zone, or NAPA. Clark's doesn't carry it
either.

Is there some kind of hold-down for the canopy in case of a tail wind?

Hi Bill ,I cant help you with the 620 .I have built several aircraft
engines and I use Loctite 515 .It is approved for use on aircraft
engines and has served me well .It may be more available than the 620
.Just a thought.

Geeze...
All this whining about bandits and shipping charges, you'd think this was a
crybaby forum instead of a place to talk about airplanes ;)
I bought some Loctite 620 from a local bearing supply house. There's
probably one near you Bill.
But it ain't cheap... them theives all want to make an obscene profit so
they can drive their Rolls Royces back home to their mansions.

Subject: | Re: How about a sliding canopy? |
It would seem fairly simple to design a sliding canopy that would raise up a
few inches at the front and then slide to the rear.
>From my own design work I know that the devil is always in the details and I
have not thought this completely through, but I think I will give this allot
of thought.
I have awhile before I get to that stage, so I have some time and will keep
my eyes open for other sliding designs.
Take care,
Matt

...just do not forget that the upper fuselage aft of the cockpit is
substantially wider than the forward end of the canopy/instrument panel...

This is the first built version of what I am thinking about that I have

it would also prevent the jamming that was mentioned before.
Does anyone have any plans for this sort of design?
I was thinking about a recessed rear attachment point, but I had not
figured
out how to keep water out of the fuselage yet. The external one would be
very easy to build and I could work up a design that keeps it flush with
the
plane rather than raised as shown.
All ideas are wanted and appreciated.
Thanks, Matt

I was considering purchasing one that was for sale in Vancouver, WA. The
airplane was very well built. While I liked the idea of a fixed
windscreen,
the canopy itself was a little fragile. The latching mechanism was hard
to
latch and not foolproof. The biggest reason I walked away was that the
additional support structure added a lot of weight. There was a lot more
metal required to make it all work.
Pictures attached.

Subject: | Re: Canopy Block |
I bought a piece of steel strap from the local Ace hardware store. It
was about 3/16" thick and an inch wide and had holes in it at regular
intervals. I enlarged a hole at one end to fit over the latch pin on my
canopy rail. I bought a replacement latch pin from the "Help" display at
a local auto parts store and installed this pin in the other end of my
steel strap. Now when I want to prop open the canopy of my Zodiac while
taxing, I stick the latch pin on the end of my steel strap into the
canopy latch and slip the hole on the other end over the latch pin on
the canopy rail. I think I paid less than ten dollars for the parts and
the assembly only weighs a few ounces and takes up very little space.
Works like a charm.

I would think any industrial supply would have the complete Loctite
line. Likewise, check with a bearing supply. The ones I go to carry
