Its listed in my plans as 'powerplant installed weight' and I feel that would mean
to include all coolant / oil, accessories. fuel pumps, propellor and engine
mount system.
I feel the limit is at an appropriate level, I have 880 lbs empty wt (including
unuseable fuel and radio / transponder) and the handling becomes noticably different
when operating close to full gross.

...since these are thin wall free blown bubbles, it is unlikely that it would nest
well. perhaps cutting all of it away except for the peripheral 6" band would
allow it to be a template of reasonable accuracy?
Hi Joe,
The cracked canopy may be used as a template for trimming and spotting
holes and edges could it not?
Might for this reason be best to use a canopy from Zenith again. You'd
probably want to ask what grade of acrylic
plastic they're using as well or if they've gone to a more durable
material recently. Plastics keep changing and you
may have the opportunity to improve the available product. Cost would
be the lesser of concerns at this point I think.
During the process,
Remember to use small diameter hose segments around the screws when they
go thru the plastic and manually break
all hole edges both sides with a relatively new countersink. Don't
over-tighten, etc. Study the crack to determine what
caused it before starting over. Hope you have better luck next round.
I remember sweating bullets when I did mine.
Good luck,

Subject: | Re:Re:Re:How about a sliding canopy |
one of the issues address with my misguided??? attempt to implement a RV9 canopy
on the XL was exactly that - to allow the aircraft that inverted in a low energy
situation to rest on the engine case and the substantial built up roll bar
structure that the Van's uses. Unfortunately, the mounting for the roll structure
is not sound in the XL as it was never intended to carry any of those loads.
Just another example of a "minor adaptation" that becomes a big deal when
making a change to a well designed plane.

Last thoughts on canopies: Safety is paramount. A slider is convenient and cool,
but may leak and be drafty. The "flip top" and side hinge have their drawbacks
in high wind. I will confess to some formal training at Arizona State (Sun
Devil U) way back in the last century. I was a military pilot then and Uncle
Sam wanted me to be involved with R&D. The focus was on aircraft crash survival
issues. Some notes on the 601XL: There is NO roll over protection such as a
reinforced windshield bow or 4130 structure behind the seats. This adds weight
but would be desirable for several reasons. Protects your head bone and allows
shoulder restraints to properly lead UP and aft to an anchor. Not off your shoulders
and down like some designs. (RV8.) That design guaranties two broken
collar bones in a crash. You still need a fire ax or break out tool (screwdriver)
to bust out. The rudder survives some roll overs although not designed for
that. The BD5 swing up/back type shares the same
draw backs. It was also used on a production twin, The WING Derringer now hq'ed
in Mobile, AL. Years ago, watched some nerd in a Schweitzer 1-26 (side hinge
canopy) land down wind and go over on his back. There was no post crash fire.
We group of rubberneckers pushed it back upright and he could then open the canopy.
It weighs about 350lbs empty. No damage. None. Well, some paint. The best
way to leave an A/C in a hurry is through a side door or hatch. One on each
side would be great. (Ercoupe, Swift, Cessna) Just some thoughts.

I am building a 701 and was hopeful that EW would be close to Zenith's
estimate. With 1100# GW, an EW of less than 600# is good target.
What EWs have others achieved?

Bill,
Try the nearest Fastenal store. Loctite 620 is listed as an item they
carry from less than $2 to around $150 depending on package size. They
should be able to get it on a regular stock order if not on hand and
avoid outrageous shipping fees.

The list pulls through again. Rarely do you get a complete answer
from one lister, but you will, eventually.
There are two stages to the Loctite website re: local outlets. The
first stage said the closest FULL LINE retailer was 100 miles away in
Ohio. The second stage said the closest retailer who STOCKED WHAT I
WANTED was less than 1/2 hour drive away. I called them, and they have 5
bottles each of all the differing sizes of 620 in stock.
I can make the round trip for less than $5 in gas, and since I'm on
vacation, who cares about the time? It's a matter of principle.
Compare this to MCS's $10 HANDLING CHARGE. Not SHIPPING and
handling. The last time I ordered a ball mill from ACS, the price of the
tool was less than $3. My total bill was nearly $20!
If you walked into an auto parts store and said "I need a turn
signal bulb", wouldn't you be a little miffed if they charged you $10 to
find the bulb on their shelves, put the bulb in a bag, and ring up the
transaction?
Like I said, it's a matter of principle. I don't begrudge Loctite
the cost of their product, but I do MCS for making the customer pay for
what is a normal cost of doing business.

When asked about "Apparently Aircraft Spruce has a new policy for shipping orders
via USPS. In this case (by far the least expensive method of shipping small
orders) they now take two business days to process the order instead of one.
They prepare it on the first day and get it to the post office on the second
day. This is a big reduction in service, in my experience, since they used to
process and ship USPS orders in the same day up to now."

I've mentioned this before at the Zenith dinner atr Oshkosh, but I'll bring
it up again.
I've noticed that some aircraft kit manufacturers (Sonex) arrange to have
examples of their product parked together in close proximity to their display.
I think this is a great idea. In years past, it's been possible to see
anywhere from 6-12 flying examples of Sonex's....all parked in a row....or at
least close together. But when I try to find Zeniths, they're spread all over
the place. There's one here...and another one a mile away over there...never
close together. Would it be possible to request the folks at Oshkosh to
allow Zenith builders to park their planes somewhat close to each
other.....possibly even close to the Zenith display?
I hope to fly my 601XL to Oshkosh next year. I would love to show it to
fellow builders and potential builders. I think it would be great to be able
to look at a dozen 601s.....and 701s....all parked within a short distance of
each other....even a hundred yards apart. As it is, I have to search and
walk for miles, literally, to see Zenith planes that builders have flown in to
AirVenture.

on vacation, who cares about the time? It's a matter of principle.
Compare this to MCS's $10 HANDLING CHARGE. Not SHIPPING and
handling. The last time I ordered a ball mill from ACS, the price of the
tool was less than $3. My total bill was nearly $20!
If you walked into an auto parts store and said "I need a turn
signal bulb", wouldn't you be a little miffed if they charged you $10 to
find the bulb on their shelves, put the bulb in a bag, and ring up the
transaction?
Like I said, it's a matter of principle. I don't begrudge
Loctite the cost of their product, but I do MCS for making the customer
pay for what is a normal cost of doing business.

Does your State or Province have "inventory" taxes. You know, where
taxes go up if you try to keep a good inventory? One of our best
customers is in Taxxachusetts where they apparently have big inventory
taxes. Their orders to our plant die around November and stay dead
through inventory time at the end of the year, then explode the first
week in January as they try to make up for lost time. I assume the
State tax policy causes this.

Two years ago we had six 601s parked together near the north end of the
homebuilt area. My first night, I parked in homebuilt camping but moved
it over with the others the next day and moved my camp to vintage
camping with a bunch of members of my home chapter. I don't think this
601 grouping was planned in advance, they all just got there early and
spotted other 601s and found space nearby.

I am pretty sure that some of the RANS owners are arranging to park their
planes across from the RANS booth this year. They have been organizing it
via the RANSFlyers Yahoo group. I am not sure what the current count of
planes is, but they should have a few.
I have been a member of the RANSFlyers group for a while now and you won't
meet a nicer or more helpful group of folks. Spin by and say hi if you get
a chance. (I, unfortunately, will not be there.)

Dave,
I have noticed and complained about the same thing at both
Oshkosh and Sun-N-Fun. Sonex may have an advantage by being a tenant on the
airport at OSH. Anyway, my response has been to organize the Zenith
Gathering to accomplish having a place to hangar fly with fellow enthusiasts
physically near our planes. We will be able to park our planes near the
Zenith tent in Winchester this September.

Subject: | ACS USPS Shipping |
When asked about:
"Apparently Aircraft Spruce has a new policy for shipping orders via USPS.
In this case (by far the least expensive method of shipping small orders)
they now take two business days to process the order instead of one. They
prepare it on the first day and get it to the post office on the second day.
This is a big reduction in service, in my experience, since they used to
process and ship USPS orders in the same day up to now."
Aircraft Spruce replied:
"I apologize for any confusion on shipping USPS. This is usually the least
expensive way of shipping, but we have always taken our mail orders to the
post office in the morning. No new policies have been implimented. All USPS
orders are taken to the post office the day after they are invoiced, and
there are no guaranteed delivery times with USPS. UPS, FED EX, and DHL have
trucks that come several times in the evening to pick up their packages, but
we have to deliver mail orders to the post office with our truck. We have
vendor orders to pick up in L.A., Orange, and Riverside counties, and is
most efficient to have a regular morning delivery to the post office. We are
doing our best to get your parts to you as soon as possible, but if you have
a rush order, please select UPS, FED EX or DHL as your forwarder. Please
contact me if you have any other questions or concerns.

Hi,
I just completed my CH701SP this month. Inspection by FAA will take
place next Monday. But back to your question, my 701 weighs in at 596
lbs empty. It has a nice panel and is painted. The CG is good with full
fuel (20 gal.) and two 180 lb. people but can only carry about 18 lbs of
baggage without going over gross weight. My aircraft was constructed
from a full up Zenith kit with the Rotax 912ULS and WarpDrive prop.

Hey Ralph,
If your 701 is really at 880 lbs empty then you only have 1100 -880 -> 220
lbs for you and fuel by my figuring. Thats not much to work with. I am
interested in what has added so much weight. The Zenith empty weight per the
drawing is about 580 lbs. with a Rotax engine. What powerplant and prop do
you have on your bird?

Thanks for the reply, I like the sound of that weight better. Planning on a

between the earlier two notch flap settings and the current single setup on the
