Subject: | Re: Facet fuel pump |
I'm using a 40106 fuel pump (4.5 - 6 PSI, don't know about internal
check valve) in each wing root with a check valve downstream next to it
( same MA3-SPA carb). The check valve prevents the possibility of fuel
transfer from tank to tank and with two fuel pumps there is redundancy
in the system. At this time I simply have a DPDT switch which controls
both the power to one tank or the other and at the same time controls
which fuel sender is read by the gauge. I plan to add a separate switch
to be able to run both pumps at once during critical times. I will have
a different circuit for this second switch right from the battery and
use 2 diodes to prevent feed back between the two circuits. This will
give complete redundancy in all things but the battery. Even that would
be possible with a second battery and diode arraignment.
My local auto supply caries Facet pumps but higher price than Wicks or
ACS.

I think there might be a misconception about the 40108 Facet fuel
pump. The 40108 Facet pump does NOT have a check valve in it. See the
specs on their web site:
http://www.facet-purolator.com/solidstate.asp
I am using two of them...one on each wing tank. If I start with an
empty tank on the left hand side...and run the right fuel pump, it pumps
fuel into the left tank. I'm not sure if this is a problem or not. It
seems to supply the carburetor (MA3-SPA) just fine...but it also
transfers fuel to the other tank. Has anyone else noted this? I'm
wondering if the 40147 or 40148 might work as well, or better. Does
anyone know of another supplier, besides Aircraft Spruce?

Hello group ,getting ready to order my control turnbuckles . Questions
;page 6-B-23 shows 6 turns buckles identified by the letter F and one by
the letter E .The parts list shows three AN140 and four AN130 ,which is
correct or what should be ordered .I would assume that the 800# and
length of 4 1/2" would work .

Ladies and Gentlemen
I can understand Ron's fustration providing he was following the
procedures shown on the bottom of every post but what I cannot
understand is his complete disregard for the fact that there are some
people like the ladies who were very much offended by his remark. I
think we are all well rid of him. Now I hope we can get back to the
exchange of ideas and fixes because that's what we are all about.

Sheez! It's a wonder the knowledege that can flow from . . . nevermind!
Actually, I got some really good information off the list from list users.
Thanks. The water/tube method for leveling those far away places works awsome.
Now, whne I fly, I wont have to add a lot of left/right/up/down trim like I too
have had to do to my R/C planeas that I repaired after crashing because I had
too many beers and could only fly in circles around the runway till I lnaded/crashed
or crashed landed!.
Really, thanks to those with the useful information and to the others, thanks for

Great list. Any idea how many feet of the two types lines you need. Also, do you
order the lines to fit or total length and cut it?

Dave, I'm confused. Do you not have a fuel valve between the tanks?
I would think you fuel system would look like this.
Left Tank Right Tank
Pump Pump
Fuel Selector
Gasolator
Carb or Pumb then Carb
How is fuel going back through the fuel selctor?

Subject: | Oil cooler lines |
All -
I have a query that isn't Zenith (or even airplane) related that I think you
might be able to help out with.
I have a Miata that is kitted out as a track-day/race school car and I
recently replaced the stock radiator with a big 2 1/4 " aluminum race
radiator that has an oil cooler built in to it (see this
link<http://www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?deptid=&parentid=&stocknumber-16500%2520%25201999-05>if
curious). The oil lines that Flyin Miata sell don't work out in my
particular car because of some other modifications (like a oil filter
relocation kit) that are lurking under the hood.
So my question to you good folks is this: Where can I get braided stainless
oil lines (AN8 fittings, 1/2" interior diameter hose, 90 degree fittings on
one end) made to order to length? And what is the best way to measure for
the appropriate length? I obviously don't have a straight shot from end
point to end point to get an easy measure with a tape.
Thanks
Dave

I also note that the last two items on the list for Summit have the same part number.
Sumit Racing TUBE NUT -3 AN EAR-581803ERL 3 $3.25 $9.75
Sumit Racing TUBE SLEEVE -3 AN EAR-581803ERL 3 $1.75 $5.25
Doing a little looking on their site I think that the sleeve is probably EAR-561903ERL.
Could you check that?

Dave,
You could buy a length of clear tubing (3/8") at your local hardware store
and use it to figure out your hose routing. Trim to length or mark it off
and measure the length of the good hose you need.

Your right That's the part # I have this in a spread sheet and that one
slipped thru the cracks. Also I just bought 20 ft of the tubing and cut to
length. Also when I built the wings I put a disconnect between the wing and fuel
selector on both wings so it includes the parts for that also. If you go the
metal tube route you will have to get an adapter to go from the bulkhead fitting
to the nylon tubing that go to the break cylinders.

Hi Steve,
Thanks a lot for taking time to do a status on your 450 hours inspection. I
find it positive, I think it is very low number of problems, it's sound
good. Can I ask you to provide us a photo on point 2 about clearance of
panels. I want to verify if this need a plan modification to guaranty
clearance, and eventually I want to document this adjustment it in my web

Objet: Zenith-List: CH640: Findings at 2nd condition inspection
I just completed the second condition inspection on my CH640. I have 450
hours on the tach. Everything looked good except for a few items requiring
attention. If anyone is interested, here is what I found.
1. New brake pads. I probably could have gone another 6 months, but
figured I might as well change them now. This was the first set of pads. The
original tires are still fine.
2. There are 2 panels on the aft side fuselage which cover the elevator
trim mechanism. On the ground there is good clearance between these panels
and an underlying bracket that attaches the trim tabs to the trim tab
bellcrank. However, in flight they must be bowing in enough to rub on the
bracket and have etched a groove on one side of the bracket. I am going to
put in a new bracket and put a 1/8" piece of teflon on the bracket to
prevent wear in the future.
3. The front spinner bulkhead had a crack extending from one of the screw
holes inward and 1/3 of the way around the bulkhead. I had noticed the last
few flights that at some rpm's there was a bit more vibration than I am used
to. I am going to replace the bulkhead. Interestingly, I took a flight this
morning without the spinner to see how much difference it made. To my
surprise I couldn't detect a difference in speed with a quick run at 4500
feet, and CHT's were a bit lower. Even though it looks ugly, I may just fly
without a spinner for a while.
4. The throttle cable was not pushing the throttle all the way to the stop
at full power. It was a very small gap, but every little bit of power helps.
I just adjusted the linkage.
That's it. Now I can get back to flying.

They've probably cut back on staff because we're moving into a long overdue recession.

Subject: | Re: Aircraft financing |
Considering you can build an airframe from scratch for about $4,500, why would
you need financing? $200/month for 24 months would pay for it. That's about as
fast as you can work anyway. Even if you bought kit sections, the time it takes
to build one section you can save up for the next section, so all you need
to do is save for the first section just to get started. While you're saving for
the first section you can get your workshop in order.
[quote="ben_ramler2002(at)yahoo.c"]Here's question for all Finance experts out
there,
How come most aircraft financing are more incline to offer financing like zenith
vs something like Kolb, or ferguson aircraft? Do they base it off of reputatuion?

the bungee off again??? Probably no help. I didn't try that yet.....Geoff
Bet you a shoehorn (an actual smooth stainless steel shoehorn) could be fitted
to the breaker bar and slid under the bungee cord and removed the opposite way
it was put on. ;)

Nice looking dies. They look just like the one's I'm using. To do the squash I
just put a big 3/4 inch bolt through the center and torqued down. Why the need
for the car? A big bolt works just fine.

I love this list.
I got several great suggestions on how to measure and a pointer to the
parts. All in less than five hours.
Thanks so much for the super quick replies.

A customer recently posted a comment regarding Aircraft Spruce's
handling of orders shipped by the USPS. We want to assure all of our
customers that we have made no policy changes regarding USPS packages.
Shipments by UPS, DHL, FedEx, etc., leave our building the same day they
are packaged due to the fact the carrier picks up late in the day;
conversely, the post office is closed by the time USPS packages are
completed each day. Therefore, we have to transport USPS packages to the
post office the next morning.
We appreciate the business we receive from the Zenith builders, and if
anyone has any questions or suggestions, please contact us at any time.

Was drilling the bracket to the spar and noticed that the hole just nicked

To whoever wrote the message below, not to worry. Everyone out
here in aviation land knows that you guys are the best supply house in
the country for airplane builders and restorers. The business Jim
Irwin's dad started from scratch reminds me of Wal-mart in this way.
You provide goods we need at fair prices and you grow and grow. I
really don't see how your competition keeps up with you.

I didn't get a picture or link in the e-mail from the list. But the web
access to the list gives this link:

What ever ideas the list comes up with I'd call the factory for another
point of view. Myself, I'm not wild about that nick in the doubler.

Do call ZAC - they might tell you to file the area so it is smooth, just
like when you file nicks of a propeller.

This goes without saying,, but. One should never tell the salesman when
ordering anything it's for an experimental aircraft. Some companies wil
l just shrug it off and sell ya the parts, I know for a fact Summit will
NOT sell you anything when they hear its going on a plane. YMMV

I also note that the last two items on the list for Summit have the same
part number.
Sumit Racing TUBE NUT -3 AN =EF=BD EAR-581803ERL 3 $3.25 $9.75
Sumit Racing TUBE SLEEVE -3 AN =EF=BD EAR-581803ERL 3 $1.75 $5.25
Doing a little looking on their site I think that the sleeve is probably
EAR-561903ERL. Could you check that?

Ben,
How is your 801 doing? How many hours do you have now? Is there any others
flying with your package? What is the total engine weight?
