of some sort - not the same thing.

I LOVE my 801, wish it flew a little faster but thats the trade off of b
eing able to take off and land in a couple of hundred feet, I am coming
up on 200 hours and I have probably 500+ takeoff and landings. Thanks to
Zenith for designing a very strong plane, I have tried to break the thi
ng in half by running full power all the way up to 18,000 feet and it sh
ows absolutley no signs of failure, buckling, distorting and any of thos
e other pesky quirks that go along with some dummy douling the HP requir
ments for an 801. There are only few "don't" I have uncovered. One is, N
ever hold the stick back with full flaps and let the motor pull it into
the air, the plane will rotate and climb well before I see 20 mph on the
airspeed indicator, the flaperons do not have proper authority at those
low speeds and the plane will torque roll around its axis. I did this o
nce and NEVER again. The motor is working great, in fact alot better the
n I even envisioned, it is just too powerful for the 801. if I had to do
it over again it would have a hopped up 0-400 lyc clone. Zenith reccome
nds a firewall forward weight of 440 lbs and I am at 437, so it is withi
n the design range but the plane could benefit from reduced powerplant w
eight and a less HP. It has never been lower then 6400 MSL so maybe at s
ea level it will be spectacular in STOL traits down where the air is th
ick. I have been contacted by dozens of RV-10 , Lanciar, Bearcat and oth
er experimental owners wanting the powerplant and it is a perfect fit fo
r those. I will not sell anything till I achieve 300 hours and I am conv
inced it is a safe and proven firewall forward package. After all those
thinks can and will kill people and I don't want that to trouble me as I
go through life. As for all you homebuilders. keep at it, the feeling o
f flying a creation you crafted by hand is "priceless".

All-
ACS catalog prices are quite reasonable- shipping is what kills you.
I'd love to see ACS follow Wal-Marts lead and have an outlet every
10 miles, but if there were that many builders, there wouldn't be any
airspace!

A customer recently posted a comment regarding Aircraft Spruce's
handling of orders shipped by the USPS. We want to assure all of our
customers that we have made no policy changes regarding USPS packages.
Shipments by UPS, DHL, FedEx, etc., leave our building the same day they
are packaged due to the fact the carrier picks up late in the day;
conversely, the post office is closed by the time USPS packages are
completed each day. Therefore, we have to transport USPS packages to the
post office the next morning.
We appreciate the business we receive from the Zenith builders, and
if anyone has any questions or suggestions, please contact us at any

As much as I agree with you in principle, that wouldn't be fair to
Matt. He's not a moderator, he's a technical administrator. Remember,
we're not the only builder's group on the Matronics list, and to monitor
real-time the postings for all the groups AND act as censor would be a
mind boggling task.
We have to patrol the list ourselves, and that's what we did.
I've been a list member for 3 (?) years, and this is the first time
this type of problem has come up. You'll see the F word occasionally in
the body of a post, but not continuously in the subject line. This guy
was obviously just trying to be the list equivalent of Howard Stern. If
he was that computer illiterate he would have forgotten to plug it in.

Hi Rob,
After looking at the picture, I'd think you need a new spar and
doubler. Not so much damage to the doubler, but
The thinner wing and concern about stresses today will probably suggest
new parts. Don't feel bad. I had to rebuild the left wing spar on
my HDS once because of a similar serious issue. To make all new parts,
cost about two weeks, worse to the ego. Slow down a little and
get back into it.

I sat in the new AMD Patriot when I was in Eastman and stirred the
controls. Speaking as a person who prefers low wing airplanes, the high
wing doesn't intrude too much on the visibility. I imagine that flight
schools would love it. Some of the old buzzards on the ramp at "Heart of
Georgia" thought it was easier to get in and out of the Patriot than a 601,
but I never found it difficult to get in and out of a 601. However,
compared to other high wing LSAs, entry and exit are a snap! I had
nightmares after one ride in a Legend Cub.
However, the biggest drawback to the Patriot is the same one that burdens
the 601: No cup holders! How could anyone design a modern airplane without
cup holders? (It is NOT a matter of weight!)
601 Builders, what have you done about the tragic lack of cup holders in our
design?

If you get the AOPA Pilot magazine there's an article on the mew LSA
design from Chris. Called the Patriot, it differs from traditional CH
designs by having a vertical stabilizer/rudder instead of the all-flying
rudder we're are used to seeing. Quite an attractive a/c, not like the
701 (not that the 701 doesn't have its charms).
High-wing, almost 33 foot span, 118 kt cruise, stall (clean) at 40 kts,
price to be in $90 to $95K range. Looks better than the Cessna LSA
offering to me.
Should be at OSH.

In an effort to always learn more about our planes I thought about
joining EAA. Which magazine do people recommend for experimental private
pilots? The Sport Aviation magazine or the Sport Pilot Magazine. I am a
private pilot and will be building a 601 XL but may exercise my rights
to be a Sport Pilot as I get older. Thanks for all the great info on the
list.

Hi Darrell,
Welcome aboard.
I started building my Zodiac XL a couple of years ago and joined the
EAA about the same time. At first I got the Sport Pilot magazine,
but now I get both of them. The Sport Pilot magazine has planes and
other stuff more appropriate for Sport Pilots, but it is rather
small. The larger Sport Aviation magazine has lots of planes a Sport
Pilot can't fly, but it also has lots of "Generic" flying information
valuable to a Sport Pilot. This includes articles on the latest
avionics, flying skill articles, and many others that I find
interesting and informative.
I also recommend you try attending meetings of one or more of the
local EAA chapters. There is one that I belong to based in
Vancouver, WA and another (much larger) chapter based in Hillsboro,
OR. At local chapters you meet lots of people who can help you along
with your building project and also just meet people who share your interests.

I would think that you would be okay if you could file the doubler down and still
respect hole-to-edge distances of min 2xD, but I could be wrong.

Looking at the 2 attached pics of the left and right side of my engine, what would
be the best place to install the EGT sensors.

Ben,
Glad to hear that all is working out with the 801 and your engine. Are you
considering a smaller version, say a V-6? I understand the lack of speed, I
built a 701 and am having a lot of fun but I am looking to go faster. I will be
starting a Glastar in the fall and am also considering alternative engines.

For the record, the 6.4mm reamer specified on 6-W-10-2 of the 601XL plans wasn't
large enough to accomodate the bushings I bought from Zenith. I had to go to
a 6.5mm reamer, which worked perfectly.
