I must have been crazy to say make offer for these brand new instruments
because I have had some crazy offers. I should have said let me bend over. I am

trying to sell these to my fellow builders and save you some money. But I
won't take a bath on them. I was thinking of 20% off aircraft spruces price. I

know I can get that for them on ebay or barnstormers. I would like to sell them

to a corvair builder and if you buy the package it would save you about
      1100.00.

| Subject: | Re: More torque wrench |

Regarding the considerations about weight testing your torque wrench a few
      things come to mind.

If you are going to torque a nut or bolt for say 240 in. lb. ( the way it
was written when I was in school back when Moses was a boy) then you would
      use 20 lb@12in. The wrench can be considered accurate I suppose + - 10%
(216 - 264 in.lb.) As the nut or bolt you are torquing is at the required
      calibration point I can't see a problem.

If you want to have your torque wrench mapped on an electronic load cell
calibration machine expect to spend some serious dollars. In Canada any
measurement tools used by an AME (Aircraft Maintenance Engineer) have to be
calibrated on a 24 mo. Cycle and you can believe me it co$ts big time. Not
only torque wrenches have to be calibrated but everything from micrometers
to scales and magnetic compasses have to be marked as calibrated.

If you can duplicate similar accuracy without the cost of a commercial
calibration I figure it's worth it.

The idea of using a double female socket sounds viable especially if the
calibration wrench is a beam type wrench. Using one of the new load cell
electronic torque wrenches will probably give accurate results with the same
      double female socket.

I was about to order a Whelen tail light assembly, but they come in a variety of
configurations. One of the choices is vertical or horizontal. Does vertical
mean it is to be mounted a vertical surface like the trailing edge of the
tail? Or does vertical mean the light build would be pointing up? The one I need
would be for the trailing edge. Thanks.

I was there on Tuesday & Wednesday and I counted 12
601's. Only 4 or 5 were XL's, with the rest being
HD's and HDS's. Some were in the Homebuilt Camping
area, some were on the main flight line and two at the
Zenith booth. Al's red & white HDS on the flight line
had the best workmanship I've ever seen and had a
retrofit forward tilting canopy. Dick's blue & white
HD was also a beautiful ship with a very nice panel
      and a Corvair engine.
This was my first trip to Oshkosh. What a BLAST!!

      Jeff,
Having made one of the crazy offers I can't help but respond. I think you're
right, you should sell them on ebay. I've been watching avionics on ebay for
the past month. I recently saw 2 different used Garmin GPS 296s go for over
2 grand each.. This is a GPS you can buy brand new for 1200 dollars!
But don't be so hard on us "crazy" offerers. To me part of what I'm buying when
I spend thousands of dollars for something is the peice of mind that if something
is broken I have someone I can go back to for satisfaction. Combine that
with the fact that the instruments you are offering for sale aren't exactly
what I was looking for. I'm at the point now where I need the instruments to
lay out my control panel, but they are liable to not get tested or used for another
2 years (when I estimate I'll be finished). Because of this, buying second
      hand is a sizeable risk.
Good luck selling them. I hope you get all or most of your money back. No offense
      intended.

| Subject: | 601 Wing Spoilers: On the Ground |

      Asking for advice:
It is the "windy season" in the Florida Keys. My 601XL has to sit tied down
outside. When the circular storms come, I wouldn't be surprised to see
breezes that exceed Vr, Vx, Vy, and Vna coming right down the runway.

(Aside: for those of you who say "Fly it away to safety" I'd say that you
havn't been down here to the end of the narrow peninsula that is Florida.
"Safety" is only assured more than 1000 miles away ... maybe. They really
do NOT know where these storms are going! )

(Story to prove the point: August 2004 I had an Grumman sitting at a
bayfront airport in Tampa. The official word was that Tampa was going to
get hit hard by hurricane Charley. The Bay was going to rise 30 feet. So,
I thought, "I should save my airplane and fly it to Arcadia." Arcadia is a
town far inland and south of Tampa. Well, preparing the family was more
important than saving the Grumman, so I didn't fly. The storm didn't come
close to Tampa while the Arcadia airport was hit hard. As another example,
look at the unnecessary evacuation of Houston in advance of Katrina. They
really do not have much of a clue where these things will go.)
For those of you who say: "Put it in a hangar". Well, none are available in
the foreseeable future and we have probably suffered more losses among
airplanes in hangars at Marathon than in the open. Hangar doors (The
phrase: "Big as a barn door") fail and crash on the airplanes inside.

Anyway, I have other responsibilities and can't be sitting with the airplane
      1000 miles away.

So, I want to keep the wings on my 601 from trying to fly. Questions for
      the group:

      1. I see that Kennon Covers has wing covers with spoilers built in. SEE:
      http://www.kennoncovers.com/wingcovers.htm
Has anyone tried these on any aircraft? A 601? How difficult to put on and
      take off?

      2. I can't believe that it takes much to be a spolier, but the big problem
is attaching something to the 601's wing because the whole back edge is full
of relatively fragile control surfaces. Also, I don't want to ruin the
paint. How about an old blanket tied onto the wing with 50' of 1/4"
rope? Or even, how about 50' of 1/4" or 3/8" rope itself wrapped around
each wing? Would that "spoil" the aerodynamics enough to keep the wings
      from flying?

Yes, I know... just as soon as I have my airplane securely tied down and
with "spoiled" wings, some idiot's 172C is going to break its 25 year old
tie-down ropes and land upside down on my plane. But, I will have tried!

On page 24 of their 2007 aviation catalog, they explain that the H
or V indicates the position of the mounting screws relative to the
light shield. So a vertical mounting would go on the trailing edge of
a vertical surface and the horizontal mounting would go on the
trailing edge of a horizontal surface.

Two or three of us were there all week in front of the Homebuilders
Welcome building and flew out on Saturday Morning the 28th.
Plus a couple more at the Zenith Booth.

Maybe I didn't look in the right places but there was a whole air force of
RV's but no XL's. If we are proud of our machines I think we should show

Use some foam swim "noodles" for spoilers (~$1.50 each at Walmart).
Get some extra rope to tie down your neighbors' planes if they don't
      look too secure.

Ron... I try and have everything shipped via the USPS. Anything that I get shipped
that is to large will come UPS. I do all of my own brokerage clearing...
I will not pay UPS blackmail charges for brokerages services! Their depot is
not to far from Canada Customs... so clearing is no problem, but I will still

:-[:-[ Vendors don't set the shipping costs, guys. This post is about

:-[:-[ but anything across the border costs more. USPS flat rate boxes
:-[:-[ can be a deal or a rip off depending on weight of shipped

:-[:-[ The cross border costs get complicated, don't know what options

:-[:-[ to be recovered (even with a flat rate box, there's still
:-[:-[ handling in picking and packing), that's just business, all
:-[:-[ vendors recover these costs. The smaller the order

| Subject: | Re:601 Wing Spoilers:On the Ground |

I live in the Florida panhandle and this has worked for me. I used to have a
Beech 23 tied down at Milton (2R4) and could not fly it away due to a TFR. I
laid about five sandbags down each wing spar. The weight is not enough to cause

damage, but was enough to prevent the bags blowing away. Even though the
entire span was not covered, enough was. I had considered old tires tied on, but

rejected that because I couldn't find any on short notice. I then moved into a

hangar and the next year, IVAN blew in almost all of the hangar doors that
faced south. Mine failed like the rest. Inadequate support at the bottom caused

the door bottom to blow inward and clip off the mains. The door then fell on
top of the bird and totaled it.

My build project has proven to me this is also true for the 701. I have
built and handled all the component parts except the engine (2200) as to
date. Now I am working on final assembly as I wait for the engine. I had
my son and daughter move the wings out of the work room to my assembly
area, insisting on no talking, only attention while I guided the moving
      process.
I built 2 brackets that bolt to the end of the wing (either) with nuts
within. These brackets made of 1" pipe and 1 1/4 x 1 1/4" angle made it
easy to handle the wing for finishing, as I can roll the wing around the
long axis as it is supported on a large dolly with wheels, made of the
Zenith wing shipping box, scrap OSB , scrap 2X4s, and screws saved from
the rudder kit box.(saving my pennies for a glass panel).

Any amount of flaps will shorten the take off roll in a 701-801. I hardl
y ever use them on my 801. At the full flap setting the flaperons reduce

How about $250 for the flap indicator and sender. This is within $6 of 20%.

I must have been crazy to say make offer for these brand new instruments
because I have had some crazy offers. I should have said let me bend over. I
am trying to sell these to my fellow builders and save you some money. But I
won't take a bath on them. I was thinking of 20% off aircraft spruces price.
I know I can get that for them on ebay or barnstormers. I would like to sell
them to a corvair builder and if you buy the package it would save you about
      1100.00.

ya know Frank, the only lift you will see is not that associated with laminar flow
over the airfoil. The flat plate lift like you get with a sheet of plywood
on sawhorses is also a very big player.

When the circular storms come, I wouldn't be surprised to see breezes
that exceed Vr, Vx, Vy, and Vna coming right down the runway.

(Aside: for those of you who say "Fly it away to safety" I'd say that you havn't
been down here to the end of the narrow peninsula that is Florida. "Safety"
is only assured more than 1000 miles away ... maybe. They really do NOT know
where these storms are going! )

(Story to prove the point: August 2004 I had an Grumman sitting at a bayfront
airport in Tampa. The official word was that Tampa was going to get hit hard
by hurricane Charley. The Bay was going to rise 30 feet. So, I thought, "I should
save my airplane and fly it to Arcadia." Arcadia is a town far inland and
south of Tampa. Well, preparing the family was more important than saving
the Grumman, so I didn't fly. The storm didn't come close to Tampa while the
Arcadia airport was hit hard. As another example, look at the unnecessary evacuation
of Houston in advance of Katrina. They really do not have much of a clue
      where these things will go.)

For those of you who say: "Put it in a hangar". Well, none are available in the
foreseeable future and we have probably suffered more losses among airplanes
in hangars at Marathon than in the open. Hangar doors (The phrase: "Big as
a barn door") fail and crash on the airplanes inside.

Anyway, I have other responsibilities and can't be sitting with the airplane 1000
      miles away.

So, I want to keep the wings on my 601 from trying to fly. Questions for the
      group:

       1. I see that Kennon Covers has wing covers with spoilers built in. SEE: http://www.kennoncovers.com/wingcovers.htm
Has anyone tried these on any aircraft? A 601? How difficult to put on and take
      off?

       2. I can't believe that it takes much to be a spolier, but the big problem is
attaching something to the 601's wing because the whole back edge is full of
relatively fragile control surfaces. Also, I don't want to ruin the paint.
How about an old blanket tied onto the wing with 50' of 1/4" rope? Or even,
how about 50' of 1/4" or 3/8" rope itself wrapped around each wing? Would that
"spoil" the aerodynamics enough to keep the wings from flying?

Yes, I know... just as soon as I have my airplane securely tied down and with
"spoiled" wings, some idiot's 172C is going to break its 25 year old tie-down
ropes and land upside down on my plane. But, I will have tried! -- FJD

Hello group ,I am seeing some light at the end of the tunnel .Today I
fitted and drilled the top middle skin to the fuselage . Question : when
installing the L angles inside the top middle skin ,does the L angle
slide between the skin and bulkhead at the rear or does it only butt up
to it . Wade Jones South Texas

It is a little hard to tell but I believe the L's overlap the bulkhead at
the rear of the baggage compartment AND the tubular hoop. Page 7 of the rev
2.2 photo guide 6-B-21C says "The front of the L angles are behind the tube
frame 6B21-2". Another clue is that they have you lay out the rivet lines
between rivets on the bulkhead and hoop (page 6 of the photo guide). And if
you look closely at the side view on 6-B-21 in the plans you will see dashed
lines for the L's extending into the bulkhead.

BTW: I think that if you look closely at the photo at the top of page 9 of
the 6-B-21C rev 2.2 photo guide you can see that the L goes inside the lip
of the bulkhead, not between the skin and the lip. I think you will only see
this in the high resolution picture in the CD version of the guide, not the
lower resolution ones that you can download from the Zenith web site.

If you don't have the CD version I can send you a few outtakes.

I have heard another way of doing this is to strap a 2x4x12 to the top of
the wings just behind the rivet line and that keeps the wing from flying. Put

wood blocks into the rear spar to keep it from crushing and some type of
padding to keep the straps from being cut by the edges buy the good tow straps

and put them directly over the ribs and keep your fingers crossed.

      Hello Everyone,

I regret to inform everyone that Rick Tedford passed away a couple weeks
ago. He died as a result of complications associated with a minor
      surgery.

I am helping the widow with the sale of his aircraft. If you can pass
this info to anyone that maybe interested it would be appreciated.

It is currently listed on www.barnstormers.com for $49,900.

      Chuck,
I use 1/2 flaps for takeoff from my grass strip, no flaps elsewhere. It does
shorten the takeoff roll, not necessary from pavement.

Wade, I cut and trimmed mine so that the flange touching the skin
extends between the skin and the bulkhead and the same at the tube. I
like for any "overlap" on a stiffener to disappear into the joint rather
than looking like it was slapped on as an afterthought. Probably doesn't
make a big difference either way.

      Ok

How about $250 for the flap indicator and sender. This is within $6 of 20%.

      thanks

I must have been crazy to say make offer for these brand new instruments
because I have had some crazy offers. I should have said let me bend over. I
am trying to sell these to my fellow builders and save you some money. But I
won't take a bath on them. I was thinking of 20% off aircraft spruces price.
I know I can get that for them on ebay or barnstormers. I would like to sell
them to a corvair builder and if you buy the package it would save you about
      1100.00.

Nearly always use 16 deg (full flap on rev-4 and later designs) for T/O and climbout
as it gives better cooling and about the same climb rate @ 50 KTs. Also
at the point of liftoff the pitch up response is less pronounced.

| Subject: | Oshkosh and Shipping and Corvair |

We spent 2 days at Oshkosh this year, first time since 1971 (used to go
with my Dad when I was a kid) and it's still not nearly enough. I also
didn't notice any 601's or 701's on the line (we were there Monday and
Tuesday) but we spent way more time than ever in buildings, at booths
and vendors than looking at planes. Learned a lot, had a great time,
and didn't even mind the Beach Boys concert..which was way better than
      I expected.

Prior to Oshkosh, we spent two days in Brodhead, WI at the Pietenpol
fly-in, where my wife managed to score two Piet rides (must be those
feminine wiles) and we took in William Wynn's Corvair seminar. As down
the road we're very slowly starting to get things together for a Piet
project (which the wife says comes AFTER the 701) which I plan to power
with a Corvair, his talk was very interesting, and I'm now even more
impressed with the man and the engine. Depending on how time for
engine decision synchronizes with more development in his 701 Corvair
project, we *just* might go Corvair in the 701 (that would make us a
household with 2 Covair powered planes, AND two Corvair cars! Talk
      about parts interchangeability!)

Incidentally, I did record Williams talk at Brodhead and if anyone
would like to listen, I have an mp3 uploaded I can send you a ink
for....be advised it's just over 50 megs, so you'd probably need high
      speed connection to grab it.

As for shipping costs...I've been doing mail-order as a sideline since
1978. The PO has really got me and a lot of other small mail order
business people and ebay folks torqued off. They have eliminated
surface mail rates out of the US. EVERYTHING that goes out of the
country goes at airmail rates, which of course are recently increased
as well. So, out of country buyers HAVE to pay about three times more
for shipping than they used to for the same thing. Sure, it gets there
faster, but if you're sending, say, a 20 pound amplifier to Belgium
it's gonna cost you $85 to get it there rather than about $27. Unless
of course it fits in one of two flat rate boxes. Same deal to Canada,
it all goes "air" now. So a box going to New Jersey, thousands of miles
away from me, can go for $8.95, same box to Canada goes for $21.20. I
      have lots of upset customers!

I purchased the 11-04763 AeroFlash nav/st/pos dbl flash units and am in the process
of making the mounting surface on the wing tip. With these two fixtures
all the lighting left/right/above/below/rear will be covered. Just something
to be considered. Cost from ACS was $473.

| Subject: | Leveling - (Again) |

      Hey list and maybe newbies,

About a week an a half ago, I asked about using the water level method for setting
the upper front longerons and all the other elements during this time of assembly.
If you are close to this area of assembly, you realize it sets almost
all attaching elements except for the tail.

Anyhow, thanks to a list user, he suggested using the single tube method and it
      works great.
      http://www.factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepair/WaterLevel.htm

I was able to move from front to rear as well as side to side and I believe with
great results. It's I believe a lot more accurate than the normal bubble level
over distance. It is also easier than using the floor method of leveling the
longerins and engine mounts. It's also a lot easier than using multiple levels.

Anyhow, a link for a good descriptiion of the method is attached and if you use
a pipette for your gauging lines, you will simplify matters even more. Even if
you don't fully understand it if you start just working with it and messing
around you will see how usefull it is.

I think this is good enough to share.

Again, thanks to the list member who suggestd the single tube method to me.
