I plan to use PPG Shopline Acrylic Urethane system. The problem is that I have been told that the automotave paints are not designed to hold up in tha aircraft enviroment. Like they will come off after awhile. Have any of you used other than approved aircraft paints and what were the results. On another matter, where can i get a cover thr the tach. output on my IO360? Am using all elect. panel and will not be using it. Thanks a bunch in advance. -------- Do not archive Dan Stanton 95% done paint to go 801, IO360 Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=127577#127577 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 09:04:41 AM PST US From: Ben52425@aol.com Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Paint HI DAN I PAINTED MY 601 WITH GM 11 WHITE SAME AS CAR, S CAR FINISH SPEAK, S FOR ITSELF BEAUTIFUL FINISH COST OF 3 GALLON, S 3 HUNDRED AND CHANGE GOOD LUCK BEN ************************************** http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 10:27:14 AM PST US From: "Aaron Gustafson" Subject: Re: Zenith-List: Paint >> paint people have used Acid wash, etch, epoxy primer and Dupont Nason Full-cryl 2. Joe wrote: "I plan on building everything firewall forward first, then a complete disassembly, then paint and polish." Back in the 80's my Dad, Brother & I built a Quickie. We welded up an engine stand on a small $100.00 trailer. We then mounted an exact replica of the firewall, at the correct angle to the stand. Just for the fun of it we also built a plywood instrument panel on the stand, mounting all the engine instruments & controls. We then installed the complete firewall forward package, including the cowling. We put about 15 hours on the engine on the stand, working through the various bugs. When we finally moved the FWF system to the airframe, we were very confident of the system. During first flights, the extra effort paid off with no engine bugs at all. By the way, at one point, we installed a heavy duty hunter's scale between the trailer and our car. With a little math, we found that we were getting approximately 21 HP out of the little Onan engine. I know we DID have resistance from the trailer wheels & stuff so the readings were not too accurate. However, the engine WAS rated at 22 HP. Joe, If you plan to do it twice, you might build it on a stand and break in the engine too. You said that you were going to disassemble it anyway. If and when I build, I plan to do the same with my Corvair. Just my two cents worth. I just ordered one and received it and cannot figure out how to use it so I went into the ICOM web site and came across the remark you see below and he is so right. I also wrote to the company that imports this radio and told them if they can steer me onto a web site that has a users manual than can be understood I will download it and keep the radio orherwise it is going to be returned to Aircraft Spruce where I got it. In the mean time if any of you own one of these radios and can help me just tune into one of the aviation frequencies, I would appriciate it. I am not concerned with the nav part just the radio. Somebody needs to spend a few bucks to have it revised and sent as a supplement to customers who are stuck trying to figure out how this great transciever works. An on-line revision would help. ________________________________ Message 6 _____________________________________ Time: 03:33:29 PM PST US From: "R.D.(Ron) Leclerc" Subject: Zenith-List: Magellan GSP Anybody out there with a Magellan 315 hand held GPS? Maybe I'm not quite as stupid as I thought I was --- or worse, maybe I have lots of stupid company. I'll choose the first thought. I've got a few things on this radio figured out, but mostly by playing with it rather than with the "help" of the manual. If all else fails, I'll let a 12 Year old play with it, and tutor me. To tune in a frequency first press the CLR key to exit any of the special features. It should show RX on the screen. Then just type in the frequency. I no that just sounds to simple, but I just did that and got my local ATIS. I don't have a 315, but I do have a Megellan 210. It works ok. I actually like the user interface, but I'll never buy anything from Megellan again. The 210 is very basic, so I bought the detailed maps of North America. You are made to feel like a complete criminal trying to get these maps installed. It was at least a 10 step process to get the maps registered to both the computer used to download them to the GPS and to the GPS and this included sending personal information over the internet to register with Megellan. I have no idea what will happen if I need to use a different computer, and I pretty sure that if the GPS breaks there is no way I'd be able to use the detailed maps on a new one. Oh, and the software on the PC that is required to download the maps is, in my opinion very poorly designed. I was so mad by the time I was done I wrote a nasty email to their support site saying I'd never own another Megellan product. And I won't. Considering the new GPS Maps sold nowaday, my 315 pretty well looks like a dinosaur, but IT DOES THE JOB. The 315 is not even an aircraft GPS. I set it for land and it never failed on me. Case in point: NAS New Orleans, back in the '60s, had a flying club based out of New Orl eans Lakefront Airport. Had two Luscombes, a 182, and a T-34. Hotshot Naval Aviator joined, and wanted to go flying. Club rules required you check out in increasingly sophisticated aircraft starting with the Lu scombe. No exceptions. We observed said Naval Aviator taxi some 2 or 3 miles to the active, (for most people it was about 300 yards), and t hen demonstrate to the CFI how to use every bit of the width of a runw ay for takeoffs, fly cross-country patterns, and verify the ruggedness of Luscombe gear legs.
