Subject: | Re: 701 with rear ring mount engine installation |
The one major problem I ran into was with the water pump outlets. If I am not
mistaken as you are looking at the engine from the rear the lower left water pump
outlet tube needs to have the 80 degree bend instead of the 45 degree bend.
This has been discussed previously on the board.
A second concern I ran into was the radiator brackets. After approximately 5 hours
of running the engine - all prior to actual first flight - I had both radiator
brackets break.
I don't know if it has anything to do with the ring mount but I have a tachometer
that is spastic - will read OK for awhile but all of a sudden start jumping
all over the place.
Just some observations from my installation of the 912S on the ring mount for the
CH701.

Subject: | Re: Spastic Tach |

If your tach is "electronic" and is jumping all over you may, probably will, need
to install a damping resistor across the tach leads. Reason for this is the
Rotax tach output is an AC impluse....one large pulse which, unfortunately,
is followed by several smaller pulses. The electronic tach sees all these as
"valid" indications of engine revs and therefore attempts to display a count of
the total. Since some of the trailing small pulses are "smaller" than some
others, the tach just goes into Stupid Mode.....at one instant you may have a
nearly-correct reading, then at the next instant it will attempt to display a
reading several times actual. The input threshold sensitivity of the tach "sees"
some of the small pulses, does not see others, so therefore wanders all over.
The resistor damps the smaller "ringing" pulses and leaves only the one-pulse-per-rev
as intended.
I'm at the office so don't have my notes.....start with a 10K resistor, work down
from there.
A 'scope helps to troubleshoot this problem. The WesTach site has some tech notes
which may address this problem.
Hope this is helpful.
Regards,
Zed/701/R912/etc/100 degrees F today in North Texas!

Bob W.,
I saw it and talked to the guys responsible for it. As I recall, the
engine is a new design based on some commonly available auto components,
like a Honda auto engine block. I wasn't that impressed with it since it
appeared that it wasn't ready for "prime time". It looked to me like
there were still a lot of bugs to work out before it becomes something
we can take seriously.

On the positive side the P-Tip does stay within the S-LSA rules for those concerned

Bob and all,
Here's the link to their web site: http://vulcanaircraftengines.com/
These guys have been doing "top secret" diesel projects for years for the
military under the name of a different company. The Raptor engine they
showed in the 701 at Sun n' Fun & Oshkosh this year has been designed as an
alternative to Rotax installations (weight, mounting, prop C/L). It has
several hundred hours on the dyno already, but still isn't ready to fly just
yet. Once the final design work & testing is complete and it's ready to
bring to market, it is my understanding that they're going to target OEM's
only, and not make it available to the global homebuilder community...

I presume that .035 thickness in 3003 is generally used for fuel lines. Can

Based upon the info I could find at the time, I ordered 5052 for my system. I
will be using flex lines to connect to the hard line from the wing to the plumbing
to/from the selector and in other locations as appropriate. I just ordered
some pieces cut to the max length that UPS would accept without an oversize
charge. A three foot piece is more than long enough for anyplace in the system.
Take my advice and buy a tubing bending tool..... you'll be happier with the result.

Here's what I used:
http://tinyurl.com/2a39sz
These are available at Radio Shack in various sizes. They are commonly
called Molex connectors although Radio Shack apparently doesn't call
these by that name.
The nylon shell comes with tabs that allow it to be snapped into
position in a bulkhead so a cable can be plugged into it.
Most of the connectors are designed for up to eight Amp circuits but the
two pin connectors also come with terminals sized for 20 Amp circuits.

Color me dumb, uninformed, whatever, but here's my confession.
I bought all my switches from B&C Specialties,(AeroElectric Connention). With
a small amount of investigation on their web site, I found that the 3-position
switches are to be oriented with the keyway up. Silly me, I assumed that all
the switches would be oriented the same way. WRONG! Doing some testing of the
installed switches in my panel, I found that all my 2-position switches had
up off and down on. So I am in the process of rotating a bunch of (already wired)
2-position switches to get off to be down and on to be up.
Conclusion: Don't ASSUME!

anything. Luckily for him the plane outlasted his wife's interest. He was a

Now my Dad was never interested in flying but could build anything. I miss

Ron,
I feel your pain! Sorry to say, I am more the type of person to run
over the parts than to manufacture them. Not fun for either party,
however.

I'm only a week into my 701 project and I already found a way to screw something
up. I turned on the large fan in the shop and turned around just in time to
see the skin for my stabilizer fly off the work bench and crash to the floor.
I don't know about the smiley things you guys talk about, mine had several large
frowns on it. I cried and cussed for a while and then was quite pleased
to find that a sack of lead shot and a rubber mallet made things almost like new.
With a creative paint job, "you" wouldn't know it was there.
