Subject: | Piano hinged ailerons |
My plane was in the Flycorvair hangar at the time when Gus installed the hi
nges on their ailerons. I actually purchased the hinges as part of one of
my Aircraft Spruce orders. I'm just reminiscing :-)
When Gus did the flight testing I recall him saying that the ailerons were
easier to move on the ground and at very low speeds, but at most flight spe
eds, there was no difference in feel or force required to move them.
My plane has hingeless ailerons, and I have no plans to change.Phil Maxson

Guys,
I=92m not building so you can take this accordingly:
About two years ago I went to the Flycorvair.com hanger. I looked over all
the cool stuff there. As I talked with Gus, their pilot, I asked his opinio
n of the hinged ailerons vs. the flex skin. They had recently done a conver
sion from flex to hinge on their 601XL td. What I got out of the discussion
was that the flex tends to center the controls more and the controls were,
I think he said stiffer. The hinges were more responsive but you had to pa
y more attention.
Later I visited Mark Townsend=92s house and he something like the flex woul
d be better for cross country and the hinges would be great for tooling aro
und the patch.
What are you guy=92s opinions. Mark & Gus, did I repeat you accurately?
I=92m just curious.

Dave
I have the flex hinge on my 601XL and I really don't notice any
significant difference. On the ground it definitely feels stiffer but
in flight the movement required to get the aircraft to respond is
nowhere near the full travel positon. Almost all aileron corrections
are better thought of as pressure on the stick or 1/4 inch corrections
rather than yanking and hauling on it. The flex hinge is easier to
build and mount.

HI GUYS
I AM IN THE PROCESS ON MAKING MY OWN HEAT MUFF TO GO AROUND A CESSNA STYLE MUFFLER.
I HAVE TOW HALVES THE BOLT TOGETHER AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM. I WILL HAVE
AIR COMING INTO IT FROM THE NOSE AND THEN INTO THE CABIN. MY PROBLEM IS THIS.
AT THE TOP WHERE THE TWO EXHAUST TUBES ENTER I HAVE ABOUT A 1/8 INCH GAP AND
AT THE BOTTOM I HAVE ABOUT A 1/4" GAP BETWEEN THE HEAT MUFF AND THE SINGLE EXHAUST
TUBE. WILL THIS CAUSE POOR CABIN HEAT PROBLEMS, AND WHAT CAN I USE TO SEAL
THESE GAPS THAT IS REMOVABLE?
THANKS

So, who's tried what? And how has it worked out?

I had the same conversation with Gus, at Oshkosh.
My philosophy that I am following on my airplane is to "keep it as simple as possible".
Hence I have gone with the hingeless ailerons.

Hi Andy,
I'll not flying yet but I've put mine between the seats on the aft
inclined part of the center console. Seems to work so far, the headset
wires don't seem to get in the way as much as having the jacks up front.
I had space for the jack wiring in the conduit I ran under the canopy rail.

At first I put mine centered behind the seats because it looked right. It
was not as good as behind the passenger seat since it is much easier for the
pilot to reach this during flight. Hence I moved mine behind the passenger
and it works out much better. Also when entering and exiting the cabin the
jacks are out of the way as you will tend to use the center as a hand
support spot at this time.

Spruce has some nice recessed panels that holds 4 jacks and fit on the
sloping panel at the rear of the center console. Take a look at AS&S p/n
11-01939, 11-01940 or 11-01941:
http://aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/micphonejack.php
If for some reason you only want two jacks look at 10-01595, 11-01120,
11-01130, 11-01140, 11-01150 or 11-01160:
http://aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/jack_hous.php
If you flip any of these around they give you a nice protruding "bump" that
allows you to mount jacks on a surface and have the cords somewhat parallel
to the surface.

Andy,
I installed my phone jacks where shown on the attached photo. I have not flown
with this setup as yet, so I can't comment on "how it worked out." i have caught
some flack from some who think that elbows will damage the plugs when they
are in place. If that actually happens, I guess I will install some sort of
guard around them.

Subject: | Engine Price Outlook |
Hello All,
As many of you know engine prices from our Jabiru competitors have just had
a substantial increase. This is due mainly to the weakening of the US
dollar against other world currencies. At Jabiru USA we are facing the same
problem. The Aussie dollar is now at about $ .93 US. Back in 2001 when we
started importing engines the Aussie dollar was $ .46 US. As you can see
with a little math, our costs have increased 100% since then.
We are able to sell Jabiru engines at our current price because I was able
to lock in some AU$ at a favorable rate. That's the only reason we have
not increased prices already. I will run out of those locked in AU$ before
the end of the year and at that time will have to increase prices. How much
will the increase be? If I have to pay the current rate of exchange my
costs will go up about $2,000.00 on a Jabiru 3300. There is no more margin
to squeeze to hold down part of the increase.
The bottom line is that we have about 35 engines left at the current price.
These engines will be produced in Australia in November and December and
arrive in the USA in January & February. Once these 35 are sold a new price
will take effect.
Please contact us if there are any questions.

I enjoy looking at flying videos so one of the things I've been
pondering is if might be a good idea to put a semi-permanent camera
mount/window at one or more locations in the plane. I'm thinking
maybe out on the wing housed like a landing light. Or possible on
the floor in the back for an unobstructed view down. You could put
in a pan/tilt/zoom web camera and run a USB cable or a "lipstick"
camera and a more conventional video cable. I assume some sort of
vibration damping would be a good idea.
An body ever tried this? Thoughts?

Andy,
I made a jack-box and placed it behind the passenger seat with it angled
toward me. I also put a speaker on the opposite side with a switch to
listen to ATIS while doing preflight. The headsets and wires stay back
out of the way and it's a comfortable way for me to access headsets for
both passenger and myself.
Very happy with the results.

I attached a 90 degree angle with the jack pickups installed onto the
6B12-5 lower instrument panel gussets. This location works,
BUT I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT and I would place them somewhere
else if I were to do it again.
The pickups are easy to locate for the pilot and pass to install the
headset jacks, BUT.................
My knees (and passengers also) are in that area, and sometimes make
contact with the jacks.
If you do not remove the headset jacks before exiting, you can easily
catch the wires with you foot,
If you have the headsets jacks installed before you get in, you also
can easily catch the wiring with your foot.

That's where I put mine, right at the front outside corners of the
baggage shelf. They work very well there, the cords are completely
out of the way, but I can't easily reach them in flight and I had to
cut an opening in my plywood seat back supports to allow room for the
plugs to stick up there. If I were doing it again, I would put them a
bit further back and maybe at an angle away from the seat back and I
would make the seat backs a little narrower there to allow room to
reach the cords.
