I have had my zodiac 601 UL from Feb. this Year and found the plane to glide like
a rock and fly with a nose high attitude ,also the stall speed I found somewhat
high . after reading Klaus's report on the Wing-root fairings and the
phenomenal numbers of improvement on his HDS i could not wait to try it so weaponed
with a roll of ductape I went to the airport and made fairings on the
front part of the wing-root (works like magic) and went flying , the airplane
is NOT the same anymore , she fly's like all the (Canadian 1232 lb max) ultralights
I have been flying with a level attitude (I can now see over the nose )
specially on landing because we have a much better glide ,I have had not a lot
off time to test all exact numbers ,but think Thad stall speed has not much
changed yet(no fairing on back part of wing YET ) I LOVE MY REBORN PLANE !!
and can hardly wait to bring out the fiberglass and make the fairings permanent
Thanks Klaus for your research . if any of You guy's have experience with
wing-root fairing please let me know . Ron Smit from a rainy Abbotsford Canada

I made fibreglas wing root fairings ten years ago. Somewhat like a
Spitfire. Found the biggest effect was on climbout (better) and less
turbulence on the horizontal stab/elevators.
Will send a picture if you send me your email.

I had that idea in my head when I first started construction, but talked myself
out of it. It certainly would have been a lot of extra work! However I DID fill
all the rivets in the instrument panel with JB Weld and lightly sanded it down
before painting. It gave the panel a more finished look, and wasn't hard to
do.

Subject: | Jabiru Engine Price Outlook |
Hello All,
As many of you know engine prices from our Jabiru competitors have just had
a substantial increase. This is due mainly to the weakening of the US
dollar against other world currencies. At Jabiru USA we are facing the same
problem. The Aussie dollar is now at about $ .93 US. Back in 2001 when we
started importing engines the Aussie dollar was $ .46 US. As you can see
with a little math, our costs have increased 100% since then.
We are able to sell Jabiru engines at our current price because I was able
to lock in some AU$ at a favorable rate. That's the only reason we have
not increased prices already. I will run out of those locked in AU$ before
the end of the year and at that time will have to increase prices. How much
will the increase be? If I have to pay the current rate of exchange my
costs will go up about $2,000.00 on a Jabiru 3300. There is no more margin
to squeeze to hold down part of the increase.
The bottom line is that we have about 35 engines left at the current price.
These engines will be produced in Australia in November and December and
arrive in the USA in January & February. Once these 35 are sold a new price
will take effect.
Please contact us if there are any questions.

All-
Couldn't get a decent scan of the picture- it was of the empennage,
which looked sort of Zenith-ish. Don't think there are any 801's in our
area but you can't trust the media to know the difference between a 2
seater and a 4 seater. One of the TV channels once said a crash at Dart
airport in N.Y. was due to engine failure, and then showed footage of a
glider!!
Really curious because Greenville is where I got my SEL. It's a
tight field (<3000'), but the Rt 58 side is unobstructed.

I've been playing with that idea as well.
I think mounting in the Landing Light well is a good idea but will probably give
flare at night.
A more interesting shot will be a lipstick or ice cube camera on top of the rudder.
That way you'll have the whole airplane in the foreground (with the appropriate
wide angle lens). And it can be used for analysis as well.

Subject: | Zenith 701 Tach problems |
I would like to thank Zed Smith for his solution to my tachometer
problem. Yes you do need a 1K resistor across the leads of the tach to
make it work right at rpm's above 3000. The tach has no name on it but
is part of the Zenith instrument package.
Today was the first chance I had to run the 912S at max rpm. I
initially set my prop at 11.5 degrees and it maxed on the ground at
5700. I will leave it there at least until I get some flight time. I
have reached the point where I can now call for an appointment to get it
inspected an hopefully fly it before the end to the year.

Subject: | Re: Am I Krazy ? |
No you're not krazy. It will look a heck of a lot better. Have you
painted yet? That's when you really notice the difference - don't have
all those little black holes looking back at you... We've filled all
those holes on a couple of aircraft and the results are really good -
keep getting the comment, "Are those solid rivets??" But using putty
must have really tedious, there's a much easier way.
Mix polyester resin with enough microballons to give a 'honey'
consistency. Mix a half a cup of this and keep it on hand. When you
need to fill, take just a teaspoon of the mix in a plastic lid and add
several drops of hardener - enough so that it will go hard in half an
hour. Use the stem of a 3/32 rivet to dip in the filler and apply to
the rivet hole. Poke the stem into each hole, and when you withdraw it
will leave a neat drop of filler in there - really quick and easy.
Sometimes need to go over again and top up a few that haven't quite
filled. When its hardened just a light sand with fine paper to take off
any 'pimples' that stand proud. Best to do it while you can still
rotate the fuselage to be working down, but can do on the side as well.
Only takes a couple hours to do a whole wing panel. Well worth it for
appearance and good feeling have those holes sealed.
Attached is a photo of results.
Tailwinds always,
JG

A6 rivets certainly exist. A few came with my HD kit. ZAC sells them too.
In an old note from Nick that I re-read recently looking for the HD VDO
sender instructions (which I eventually found by the way) Nick indicated
that A5 rivets commonly are used when the holes for A4 rivets are elongated
or drilled oversize, but that A6 rivets are rarely used when a hole for an
A5 is oversize. The question then becomes "Should you use a bolt?"

Tim,
Leading edge nose rib #4, bottom skin holes #6 & 7 measured frmo the spar. I
used A5's throughout for additional strength, but now have elongated these
two holes

I am now contemplating the access door to get to the dip stick on my 601XL with
WW Corvair engine. I have some ideas, but I would like to see what others have
done, learn from your experience and maybe get it right the first time. I've
had enough "do-overs" already, thank you.

Have you considered using another type of rivet other than Avex? Perhaps yo
u could find a cherry max rivet to fit. If you can not get a backing plate
on a rivet how can you get a nut on the bolt or were you were thinking of a
rivnut?

John

What's wrong with William Wynne's standard cowling? Four quarter-turn
fasteners release the top right cover which exposes the dip stick. Pictures
attached of William's tail-dragger. Somebody (Bill Clapp?) bent his and
brought it out through the hole in the cowl. But I bet the standard
alternator position might block that.
