Subject: | Re: Avionics Master Switch: To install, or not to install |
I went with simple, no avionics master, and I never bother turning the stuff I
normally run (KY97a) on or off either. That just wears out the controls. I have
run this same radio in 2 planes over the last 15 years, no problems. It was
in a C150A with the pull starter and generator, no avionics master, not even the
'dump the radios while the keyswitch is cranking' facility.
Those 'older' radios are compliant to DOD 160, something that some of the newer
round hole mount types seem to be lacking. You can tell the cheap ones by the
messages on their websites about "must install after avionics master and xx,000
uF capacitor" The problem with these is they actually have no physical switch
of their own, and the electronic switch is 'susceptible', so this class of
device does benefit from a separate switch.
I'm with Bob's philosophy here, and if things go bad on a murky day you really
just want to fly the airplane without getting mixed up in complicated systems
that lead to more troubles than you started with. Sorry it doesnt make for a very
impressive cockpit, bit like when I got into a Piper Cub after training in
C172's and literally wondered if I could safely fly this machine because it lacked
almost every item that I thought was needed for the journey. And it didnt
have an avionics master.

One other location to avoid is around ferrous metals that could become magnetized
overtime from
static or dynamic friction. I've seen heading splits between PFD's due to this
very thing.

That sounds great. i would have been way too chicken to install it there. I'm taking
for granted that the remote magnetometer and the vertical card compass are
not simply duplicating each other's errors since they are situated very close
to each other. You have probably checked their readings on a compass rose with
everything turned on and running, right?

Hans,
I think there is another advantage to having the remote compass, you can add the
outside air temperature probe. This is useful not only that you have a reading
of the air temperature, but it also means that the airspeed will be corrected
for altitude and temperature. By the way my remote head is in the back of the
luggage rack.
Tim Shankland
Thanks for all your replies. Seems that the tail is a better place to mount the
remote compass. That means that I can put off the purchase for a little longer.

I have a dual electrical system. Seperate master relay, alternator, voltage
regulator and battery. I have a full panel and and was concerned about the
load on the Jabiru alternator wih so much stuff.
By the way do not use a Cessna type master switch. They are prone to failur

How about a Princr P-Tip / You have the best of both worlds, climb, and
cruise. It's afixed pitch prop that flexes ! go to Aircraft Spruce or Google
Prince P-Tip propeller , It's one hell of a prop .,and the best people in
the world to deal with,if you call the co. to talk prop's,you'll talk to the
owner,Lonnie Prince. He's been buildind props for about 25 years or more
for guy's like Rutan, G.E. ,U.S. Gov. the list goes on and on Alot of people
have never heard of him, I haden't untill a friend of mine told me about
them, One of the best thing's I ever did for my plane. 130 H.P. @1800

My solution to not lose the rivet heads was to buy two pueumatic rivet
guns .Use an A4 in one gun and A5 in the other gun.

Darrell
I have a Central Pneumatic riveter and a couple of HF hand riveters.
The riveter heads for any one of these will not fit any of the others. I
haven't tried to get back-up heads, but that seems like a good idea.
I have found that the pneumatic riveter is too large diameter to set
some rivets, so I used a hand riveter for those. I suggest that you buy
the pneumatic and hand riveters at the start and send the heads for both
in one shipment to ZAC to save postage. You only need to send the heads
for the 1/8" and 5/32" rivets.
I just painted all my A5 riveter heads red. Don't ask why I decided
this was a good idea.

Anyone know where I can find them? By the way do all nosepieces fit

You can install a switch with double poles to provide a level of
redundancy....but you still do not know if one set of poles has failed.

Subject: | riveter nose piece |
I built most of my plane with self cut nose pieces. I did finally buy the nose
pieces from Zenith. I use them on the cheap pneumatic Harbor Freight riveter
powered by the $89.95 HF 2hp compressor. I would recommend the nose pieces from
Zenith. These three tools are the some of the most used tools on the project. They
are a bargain especially if you can buy the riveter and compressor on
sale. I think I have about $150.00 invested in all three. Would not attempt the
project without them!
