If you look forward to checking your List email everyday (and a lot of you have
written to say that you do!), then you're probably getting at least $20 or $30
worth of Entertainment from the Lists each year. You'd pay twice that for a
subscription to some lame magazine or even a dinner out. Isn't the List worth
at least that much to you? Wouldn't it be great if you could pay that amount and
get a well-managed media source free of advertising, SPAM, and viruses? Come
to think of it, you do... :-)

Won't you please take a minute to make your Contribution today and support the
      Lists?

during this year's List Fund Raiser!! These Lists are made possible exclusively

Hi Folks, I am installing my flaps and would like some info on how to

      Hi Bill,
I believe Zenith sells a 601 to 0-200 standard mount that Stratus has
      bolt on adapters using
Lyc dampers # 71032. Zenith also does a cowl that works for the Stratus
      powered 601.

Larry, In all the pictures I've seen it looks there are modifications
needed to the standard cowl to fit a soob. Is this true? Is this
fiberglass work? There are lots of pictures with odd bumps and modified
openings, but I've never seen a description of what is really required
to put a cowling on a soob. Do you know if the same cowl would fit
either are RAM or Stratus - I assume it depends on the geometry of the
      PSRU?

      Hi Ron,
You'd be right about modifications, but the bumps are provided with the
cowl so you can place them as you
put the cowl over the engine. The images on the cowling page link
pretty much show the process I went thru.
      Not difficult, but certainly workable.
I doubt the RAM engine is going to be exactly the same, but it would be
close. His might have another mount
arrangement. The RAM engine has a gear reduction. I prefer belt for
ease of inspection and ease of repair.
Check out the link pages I've provided and click on pictures to get
larger views of what's needed. I've got a
couple of pages on fiberglass if you've not worked with it before. Not
difficult once you work thru a piece
or two. I use polyester resin type in lieu of epoxies. Much cheaper and
it will hold up well. Certainly easier to
      repair.
The geometry of the re-drive and mount bracketing that fits the Subaru
would be key here. RAM does excellent
work and has very good product. I went with Stratus because I liked the
dual Bing carburation, belt drive and the
      arrangement of the engine accessories.

Hi Ron,and Larry, just like to add a couple of foot notes Ram makes a engine
mount for a 601 and I know that , the " Big Z "sells a Jab. cowling that fit
over the Ram engine, It is very streamline with a long narrow look, and
requires a little triming and alot of sanding. If you go to www.rayair.com
you can click on the video of the orange and white 601XL taxieing and flying
it has the Jab.. cowling that I'am talking about, that's my plane. It had a
"Harley" engine in it then , and now it has a Ram/130 ,same cowling .Ram
also has a new redrive that he developed that 's super fine.I think the
reason Ram uses the gear re -drive is because of the H.P. He makes a
      100,130,140, and a 250 H.P super charged all E-81 engines .The geared
redrive is for the upper H.P. engines and being that he's knowes it will
hold up on the upper H.P. he uses on the 100. If you want to take a look the
      web is info@ramengines.com Thank's Joe N101HD 601XL/RAM

Good question Mack. You need a net or canvas anchored into something more
than sheet metal. Such as the longerons. Around the Pensacola, FL area we are

able to go to any of the sail makers, etc around here and they can whip up a
net that would work well. This restraint must be good for 26 G's at 40 lbs to

keep a laptop or six pack from whacking you. Do you remember the
"Mythbusters" episode on this? I was trained and served in this field in the military.

Many civil and military aircraft have tie down rings that are 1.75 inch dia
made of 1/4 inch seamless stock anchored with eye bolts. I have a dozen rings
      on
hand, but without the eye bolts and clevis pin that makes up the assembly.
They are rated for 750 lbs each, and will pull out of a sheet metal floor at
about that loading if not anchored with a good backing. These are yours if
they can help. I will search West Marine in town for even better hardware for
      my
      project.
Another important factor is that the shoulder harness passes through the
area of the cargo restraint and would interfere. If the harness is attached
behind and below the level of the shoulders, that would be bad. It must go over

the shoulder, then upward at 15 to 20 degrees before attaching in the rear.
This is to prevent injury in a head on. I have seen cadaver tests (leaving your

body to science, are you?) that clearly demonstrate this in head on crash
tests. The test subject was strapped into a pilot's seat with a 4 point
restraint. Xrays showed two broken collar bones. If you can find a picture of
      an
RV-8 pilot seat, examine this aspect for yourself.
I have some ideas for a simple anchor system, but I need to study the
cockpit area when its clecoed together. Its sort of jumping of the drawings at
      me
now but not that well yet. Know what I mean?

      Hi Kevin,

No its not. It's a Jabiru cowl for their 701 with about a foot wacked off the back.
My painter then molded on a blister for the Sidewinder oil pan. and glued
on the top NACA inlet. The spinner is from Cummins. Fits like a glove!

now i get the nylon plate, took a senior monent. install the flaps at very last.
use the measurements provided in the plans on the arm throws for servos. 65
to 185 mm. next follow plans for drilling location for nylon plate. do not
drill arm to flap rod yet. just slide the flaps and cleco in place at neutral
zero flap position. make sure to install the flap nylon stops. once flaps are
set at zero setting go under the plane and mark where the arm hits the two flap
pipes. scrib it then take back to shop and drill. after drilling, cleco flap
back on and put the arm and pipes all together and screw. then check the throws
on flaps by turning on the motor and adjusting the servos to suite the throws
you want. when all is working according to plan, then rive the flaps as
      the lasty thing.

Juan, you know the slab of white nylon plate located on the end of the flap
that didn't fit the measurements from Zac's plans, that we had to move about
five times before we found out were they should really be located. That nylon
plate. Remember? Best regards, Bill of Georgia

Well it looks very good! I emailed Raven yesterday and I'm going to call tomorrow,
as I'm still not sure what type of engine is going on this thing. Yours is
the 90 hp 1300? Any comments on performance. Raven seems to be pushing the turbo
one, but the extra weight seems, well extra.

Has anyone ever tried to put a HKS 700 with 60 HP in a 701? Would the
performance be severely compromised or would the plane just be a bit
slower? The HKS has a lot going for it - less expensive, light, 4
cycle, 800 TBO, and best of all 2 - 2.5 gal.per hour fuel consumption.

there is very little in performance drop or improvement from an 582 60hp
Rotax going up to a 912 80HP Rotax.
Your Climb performance two up with density altitude improves, your fuel
      consumption improves dramaticly
Cruise speed at 70% power may be lower on the 912 but not much.
I have had both motors in my Airframe.

I think you would get a noticable drop in performance to the 60hp HKS.4
stroke compared to the 582 Rotax.
