Cool, I take it you like the RAM. Both the RAM and Stratus look like
good options to me. And it's nice to have options.
I found the the pictures and videos at http://www.skyray.us. Nice
looking plane. Seeing all these completions flying is a real
inspiration.

Hi guys,
I dont want to take up too much of your time because I havnt started building
yet. After years of "research" (drooling over kit planes on the internet)
I am absolutley stricken by the 701 and there is no doubt its what i want to
build. I cant believe I never saw it before!
I have read through your entire forum and you guys are a terrific support to each
other and I have learned much by reading your posts. Im going to have a thousand
questions but for now just a couple.
Since I have definately decided on scratch building the 701 Ive been keeping my
eyes open for tools. A friend of mine has got a used tools place and he has a
nice little 24" brake for sale for $125. Its really heavy duty and easily modified
for the 1/8" bend radius.
So the question... is it big enough to be of any use in a 701 project?
What is the maximum size bend I will need to make?
Any one near Maine?
Nice to meet you all and I'm sure you will be hearing from me soon. I going
to get my plans and DVDs soon to study over the winter and make my first materials
order in the spring. I just cant stop thinking I should have bought that
brake!
Thanks,
Joshua Gurley

Hey Pete, or any other Jabiru/Zenith experts: I measured the outlet today on
my 601 HD cowling . It appeared to be about 75 square inches. It looks like
the inlets total to about 50 sq inches. I have added an additional inch to
the lip in front of the outlet (so it now is just over 2 inches) but I am still
getting overheating in cruise, with 3 cylinders showing over 300 degrees (#6
is about 330). What is the best way to fix this problem?

Hi Joshua, welcome to the group. I am also building a
CH-701 from scratch. Great project!!! Personally, I
think that you would not get a whole lot of use from a
24" brake. There is not a lot of bending that will
fit that short of a unit.
A better bet would be to take a look at the simple
brake designs on ch-601.org or ch-701.com. Also look
into the Dave Clay 8 ft break. I would build one
myself but have made do with my own design for a 5
footer for the most part. That and a couple of trips
to the local A&P shop that is friendly to homebuilders
to bend the few parts that were too long for my own.
Best o luck with your project, I've had a blast so
far. I'm about 75% done and might see the sky
sometime next summer if work would leave me at home
long enough to work on it.

I would like to warn everyone about a man named TOM HENDERSON his email is
_admin@arachnidrobotics.com_ (mailto:admin@arachnidrobotics.com) he is
selling snake oil and we all need to spread this to every list we are on. He claims
to be advertising kits for the 601xl for 5,500.00 and then never delivers
after he gets your money. I was asked by one person that wanted to build a 601
what I thought about this kit and price and I told him I had a gut feeling he
was going to rip him off and sure enough he did. I am attaching his email he
sent me regarding the 15 gal wing tanks he ordered and never received. He is
now saying he will give 600.00 for each referral you send his way.... isn't
that generous???? I am contacting the attorney general Monday morning and turn
this ass hole in. I have found that the aviation community is comprised of
mainly honest people and this guy really cuts deep into that. If anyone else
has done business with this man please send me any info you can so I can take
this guy out of business.
I was told that when he first started out he did deliver some parts but
after he lost his job he quit delivering and kept the money.
I think a lot of people are afraid to speak out because they have a fear of
never getting their parts but I have a news flash for those that have ordered
parts (you never will) so send me a email off list so we can keep aviation
honest.
Here are some emails I sent him and he sent to me.

Tom,
I think it has been long enough. I will expect either a check from you or

to insure you don't rip off any other builders. It is the 14th of Nov. I will
expect the check or tanks by the 16th.

Hi Jeff, Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to have caused a problem with

After a long period of thought and personal analysis I've come to the conclusion
of
scratch-building versus kit building the 701. Is someone kind enough to sell or
lend me there
form blocks once I get the materials on deck? Also, I came across someone in the
past that has
made flanging dies for purchase specific to Zenith type airplanes does anyone have
the link?

Hi Joshua!
Welcome to the group, glad to have another builder on board.
The longest bend you will need to make is the horizontal stab spar which around
7'.
I recommend you meet up with your local EAA and become a member. The wealth of
knowledge in the
organization is amazing and the resources that become available as you meet new
friends will help
with specialized tools. I've flown the demo at Zenith and was amazed of the capability
of this
airplane. The visibility was the best ever, besides an old Bubble Bell helicopter.
I too am beginning to scratchbuild the 701 after a long undecisive battle of time
vs
money vs quality. I purchased the rudder from Zenith and it's almost done.
While building the
rudder I decided that I require a certain level of perfection which I could not
see it the parts.
Nothing against Zeinth or any builder out there working on the kit just rather
my personal
standards and requirements.
Anyway its good to here we will be entering the journey at the same time.
There is an abundance of resources online I would start at Jon Croke's site here:

No problem (With held). If you decide to look into it in the
future, drop me a line. If you have a friend or know of someone who may be
interested, I'm offering $600 to anyone referring an eventual buyer. Might
be a good way to pick up some extra fun money (Read: A few months of
Avgas!). :-)
Thanks for the return email!

Subject: | of wrath and rants... |
I normally wouldn't reply to an email like this on-list, and
this will be my one and only on-list. Jeff, I sent both of those emails
TO YOU Thursday (yesterday), and you WILL have your tanks in your hanger
by next week. I did fall behind in things, as I believe everyone
involved knows. However, the last bit of things are going out to those
involved. They went out, or are going out, late, and that's my fault.
Anyone involved has been very gracious and patient and I appreciate that
to the extreme. It does speak to the kind of people we have in the
aviation community, as you mentioned.
I received the email below from you on Wednesday afternoon.
Try as I might, it's tough to get something back from the welder and
across the country that soon. :-) I received a second email from you
after that, which I will not insult the list with. Suffice it to say,
you mention that WW (of Corvair engine fame) was on the receiving end of
your wrath as well. We all get behind, even very behind at times, as
was the case with both myself and WW. Things are being made right
though, and the loose ends are being shipped out (including your tanks).
Finally, I suppose I should apologize to the list. I don't
think this is the place for rants, although many of us do on occasion.
If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to email me off-list.
Working hard to finish up,

Subject: Zenith-List: Scam artist
I would like to warn everyone about a man named TOM HENDERSON his email
is admin@arachnidrobotics.com he is selling snake oil and we all need to
spread this to every list we are on. He claims to be advertising kits
for the 601xl for 5,500.00 and then never delivers after he gets your
money. I was asked by one person that wanted to build a 601 what I
thought about this kit and price and I told him I had a gut feeling he
was going to rip him off and sure enough he did. I am attaching his
email he sent me regarding the 15 gal wing tanks he ordered and never
received. He is now saying he will give 600.00 for each referral you
send his way.... isn't that generous???? I am contacting the attorney
general Monday morning and turn this ass hole in. I have found that the
aviation community is comprised of mainly honest people and this guy
really cuts deep into that. If anyone else has done business with this
man please send me any info you can so I can take this guy out of
business.
I was told that when he first started out he did deliver some parts but
after he lost his job he quit delivering and kept the money.
I think a lot of people are afraid to speak out because they have a fear
of never getting their parts but I have a news flash for those that have
ordered parts (you never will) so send me a email off list so we can
keep aviation honest.
Here are some emails I sent him and he sent to me.
FROM ME
Tom,
I think it has been long enough. I will expect either a check from you
or the 15 gal. tanks, The builder (name with held) ordered these over 3
months ago. I also received another email you had sent out offering 600
for each referral. You need to make this right or I will be forced to
take further action to insure you don't rip off any other builders. It
is the 14th of Nov. I will expect the check or tanks by the 16th.
Good day

REPLY
Sorry about that Jeff, I got involved in finishing up some other things
and got behind. I'll get the tanks right out to you. I have several
due back from welding Friday, which I will get right out to you. Thanks
for the reminder.
I'll talk to you soon with tracking numbers.
No Call again
Next email
Hi Jeff, Thanks for the reply. I'm sorry to have caused a problem with
your build schedule. I thought I had gotten the tanks headed your
direction two months ago, and didn't give it any thought since I hadn't
heard anything to the contrary. I let things get way to busy a month
ago, but they're finally to a normal pace again.
I will definitely get your tanks out for you. I'm picking
up from the welder tomorrow afternoon, and I'll give you a call shortly
after that.
Talk to you tomorrow,
