Just to add my 2 cents. Homebuilt help is amazing. I like it so much I sometimes put the Jab engine install video in and watch it instead of a movie. Everything Can-Zac did was first rate. I can't say enough good things about them. BTW: If the homebuilt guy reads this, I don't know if I have the updated version of the Jab3300 install. If you can call me if I don't have it, I would like to upgrade. To be honest I have about 6million things on the burner right now and I won't be getting my engine for another month or so. This is why I am shouting out to you now. Don Merritt -------- Don Merritt- Laredo, Tx Apologies if I seem antagonistic. IMOO, the gel cell battery is the way to go. I used auto batts for the first two. Fumes get at the aluminium, you need a sealed battery box with breather and if it does ever overcharge you have a real mess. I then chose the Odessey. Seven years later still working fine and the other big advantage is you don't have to keep charging it every month if you don't/can't go flying. In the frozen north (Canada) it just sits there for 3/4 months. Twists the engine over just like new. Yes, it costs twice as much - but guess what I put in the Spitfire. Just general personal experience below: A slower drill bit rpm has more chance of breaking though the material without having completely cut the diameter away. This will pull the material up the drill bit and can cause stitches... yes I'm sure about this one. :^( The other thing a higher speed does is to allow you to put less pressure on the drill, the bit "bites" a smaller amount each revolution lessening the above situation, results in a smaller burr and still allows a short drill time. This also allows you to control the break through and subsequent "bumping" of the material with the chuck better. But you really should have a rubber bumper on the chuck for this reason anyway. Air drill if you can, on thin material. On bigger holes/thicker material or harder material slower is better. Always make sure that you are in control of the material, see stitches above. -------- Kevin Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=151283#151283

You are going to be drilling a lot of holes so I recommend that you go with something light, small and high speed. I chose the Sioux 3600 rpm palm drill (pneumatic). If you shop around you can find one for under $200. Everybody who has seen it has wanted to walk away with it :-) Obviously you will need a compressor, but then you'll need one for a rivet puller unless you use a manual puller and want to end up with arms like Popeye. I bought a sears bench mount drill press that so far has met my needs very well. You can change the speed fairly easily from something like 640 rpm up to around 3200. You didn't ask but be sure to invest in some good drill bits. When they start getting dull or show any tendancy to wander, pitch them! Good luck! I made two of these http://www.matronics.com/photoshare/agustafson@chartermi.net.03.08.2003/ One 1/8" and one 5/32" and used them almost exclusively to scratch build my 601HD. I used a computer backup battery (throw aways from a friends computer business for power). The motors came from a Ford dealer I worked for and were warranty take outs, almost new and of course free to me. These work very well for drilling aluminum. Better than the 5 or 6 cordless and 10 or 12 corded drills I have. So see what you can scrounge. Aaron Gustafson

    From: "jelveh" <jelveh@web.de>
Hi all! I'm going to be a first time time builder soon :) and I've just found this mailing-list, I hope to maybe find some more information about the kit I'm gonna build. I recently ordered an zenith-xl kit that I'm planning to build in canada (should be delivered sometime early next year), now I still have a lot of questions mostly about the powerplant... I know this is a recurring theme over this list but I hope it's ok if I ask again: I'm surfing all over the net to help me decide which engine to buy, unfortunately I'm still unsure - zenith has a list of supported engines on their site but I don't know how they would fit into what I'd like to do... What I'd like to do is after having built the plane is to maybe take a year off from work and go on a longer trip, maybe something like a round the world trip. Now I'm hoping/guessing that wouldn't be a problem for the plane itself however I have no idea what a good engine would be for such a plan. It should have a good range and of course be reliable, easy maintenance is a plus ;) and it should have no problems in cold/warm weather, I was thinking of maybe getting a diesel engine as I suppose it gives you another level of indepence on fuel matters but I haven't really found anything specific. So what would you guys/gals recommend? TIA! Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=151348#151348

Hi Jeff, In addition to Jon Croke's 912 installation DVD, there is a very good series of articles in EAA's Sport Pilot Magazine. The fourth part of this series deals with this issue. I think it is the December 2005 issue. I'm going to post a link to it, but it's kinda long so it may not format correctly in this email message: http://www.sportpilot.org/magazine/feature/2005%20-%2012%20December%20-%20Ti ps%20and%20Tricks%20for%20Ideal%20Rotax%20912%20Installation.pdf If you can't get the link to work, go to http://www.sportpilot.org <http://www.sportpilot.org/> and look at the Sport Pilot Magazine link. There are four very good articles dealing with installation and setup of the 912. Hopefully you are a member of EAA, but even if you are not, you can still read the magazine articles. If you're planning an around the world trip, the availability of repair parts and maintenance expertise in the event of a breakdown may be a major concern. In that case, the Continental O-200 would be one good choice. It's been around for decades, it's well known by repair shops around the world, parts should be readily available and it will run on 87 octane auto gas if necessary. It may not be as efficient as some of the alternatives and it may be more expensive to maintain than some, but those are some of the trade-offs. I don't want to start an(other) "off-topic" thread, so you can reply directly if you wish, but has anyone seen a good discussion of "other than internal combustion" power for GA aircraft? My reason for asking is this quote: "*Honda claims that their current V-flow fuel cell stack, 100 kW electric motor and Li-Ion battery weigh the same or less than a conventional hybrid powertrain producing less power." * THIS ARTICLE <http://www.vtec.net/articles/view-article?article_id=724661> is talking about alternative sources of automotive power, but they are working at about 130HP. If you know of any aviation discussion threads on fuel cell or hybrid power for GA acft, please let me know. -- Frank Derfler -- Daily Discussions of All the Guy Toys that aren't (clearly) illegal or (blatantly) immoral at my Blog http://MOSTLYFLYING.blogspot.com<http://mostlyflying.blogspot.com/> - Pilots learn about flights to great places at www.FLYINFLORIDA.COM<http://www.flyinflorida.com/> -Boaters get the Best Information on Cruising the Florida Keys at www.KEYSBOATER.com <http://www.keysboater.com/> -For the Best Gifts for Guys see my www.GREATGUYBOOKS.com<http://www.greatguybooks.com/> -- Frank Derfler -- Daily Discussions of All the Guy Toys that aren't (clearly) illegal or (blatantly) immoral at my Blog http://MOSTLYFLYING.blogspot.com - Pilots learn about flights to great places at www.FLYINFLORIDA.COM -Boaters get the Best Information on Cruising the Florida Keys at www.KEYSBOATER.com -For the Best Gifts for Guys see my www.GREATGUYBOOKS.com

Hi Jelveh, For such a round the world trip, the engine needs to run reliably for long periods. The engine must be able to use whatever most common fuel is available. It might not be aviation gas or even high octane. Fuels like jet-A or diesel shouldnt be considered, as theyre not easily found at a majority of minor airports. The HD thick wing would have been a better carrier for short field takeoffs full fuel and maximized payload. The XL would need to refuel with a frequency that planning becomes as difficult as the engines ability to go the distance. Id rather have an engine thats easily repaired with low cost parts that are available worldwide and dirt simple. The reliability of this engine would have been already proven by a great number of users. Tools carried for this engine at such a distance would have to be simple and minimal. Speed would have to be considered because the engine would have to run at a low cruise rpm for fuel economy and engine temperatures would have to be controlled by altitude compensating carbs and on short notice endure thermal extremes. If the engine had a re-drive, it would have to be belted for ease of maintenance, inspection, repair and adjustment. The prop would likely be a ground adjustable 3-blade. The engine that comes to mind is an automotive conversion such as a Subaru EA-81 or possibly a Corvair. Dirt simple, economical, reliable, burns 87-octane or 100LL and depends on the builder-user obtaining knowledge for a proper conversion before the fact. Many of these are still being put to severe service in gyros and run many hours at low speeds with great reliability. Im sure there may be other engines that would fill the bill too. Best regards, Larry McFarland 601HDS at www.macsmachine.com jelveh wrote: > > Hi all! > > What I'd like to do is after having built the plane is to maybe take a year off from work and go on a longer trip, maybe something like a round the world trip. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the India Air Force two of their jet pilots flew a Rotax-powered Flight Design CTsw LSA around the world in 79 days. I'm still trying to figure out how they did it VFR as the Canadian and Greenland governments really strongly discourage VFR flight plans across the Atlantic.
