My wife and I would like to polish the skins on our Rudder Kit (while waiting for the stock to go up enough to order the Tail Kit.) I've worked out all of the small scratches. All of the rivets are tight. My question is: what is the procedure for bringing the skins to a brilliant surface w/o damaging the poprivets? My son offered me the use of his automobile polisher (has about a 8-10 inch buffing pad on it.) Also, are there any William Wynne Corvair conversion builders out there? Thanks to those of you who offered your knowledge on polishing out the mild scratch marks. Worked out great and I really appreciate your patience with this newbie. John Reinking/Woodinville, WA

Hi John, There is an outstanding report on how to do it in the Kitplanes magazine, November 2007 issue called "dare to be bare". If the there is a minor scratch, and of course is only on the surface, not doing a "V" it would probably disappear. Take care, -------- Alberto Martin 601 XL - Jabiru 3300 www.iberplanes.es Igualada - Barcelona - Spain Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=151811#151811

Hey List! I was going to place the flap actuator last night and function it (Temp assembly) and the holes to receive the A12 bolts are not quite big enough in the actuator assy. One end is a plastic end in the housing and the other is the actuator end that receives the steel sleeve/push rod. Any body else have this problem? I have drill bits but would like to ask if others have had the same issue and what was the counter measure. Also, it is suggested to paint all the steel parts, (Torgue tubes etc...) but the way the sheet metal bearings work how loose are builders making the holse as to not scratch paint when installing the bearings on the tubes? Do not archive -- Thanks, Rich Simmons 601 XL Flap actuator area

Rich, I remembered having to drill out the actuator hole also. Did not seem like a big deal and there was plenty of material left on the actuator. I do not recall having any problem getting the sheet metal shims on the flap tube. Good luck, -------- David Gallagher 601 XL, tail and wings completed, fueslage almost done. The plans say the HD rudder should travel 22 to 28 degrees. I've just got 22 without lots of filing. Does anyone have real world experience on what is enough? phill --------------------------------- Never miss a thing. Make Yahoo your homepage.

The link didn't show up in the forum version of the list. Is this what you were pointing to? http://tinyurl.com/2cmfm4 If so they are kind of cool. Phil, I had to remove and open the elevator by 1/2-inch each side and construct a new filler plate because version 3, at the time didn't provide enough clearance for the rudder to swing full either way. Suggest looking carefully at how this affects your steering if you're tri-gear too. It's easy to open and widen, so I'd do that before settling for less than adequate travel. http://www.macsmachine.com/images/controllinkages/full/bclearance.gif http://www.macsmachine.com/images/elevator/full/centersect.gif * March 21* Placement of the stabilizer becomes a problem that requires modifications to both the elevator and rudder. The elevator was made to version 3 of the drawings. The 80mm width at the narrow portion of the elevators v-opening in front of the rudder is 100mm width in version 4, and for good reason. There isn't enough clearance for the rudder to move freely at 80mm. I spent half the day widening and making a single v-closing panel into a 2-piece panel. The rudder of course required trimming of the lower edge of the nose skin to get clearance with the elevator horn and limits of up-travel for the elevator. I also had to trim the bottom edge of the v-opening skin to clear the rudder at mid upper elevator travel to preclude any contact that might cause interference during travel. It's all very close and the rear attach tabs had to be trimmed to allow the elevator down to travel limits. The best result was moving the elevator " further forward to within 1/4" of the rearmost top bulkhead to improve elevator-rudder clearances. Yes Gig I ve been making these strut fairings. I m working on my 601 XL and I wanted a fairing to improve the looks of the nose wheel pant to strut hole. I spent countless hours making the tooling ( mould ) to produce a nice looking part. To recover my investment and to offer other builders the fairing, I went to eBay. Fairing is fiberglass and ready to cut, sand and paint to match your aircraft..... Steve Weston Sun Valley Airpark A20 Fort Mohave, AZ
