Subject: | 0200 Engine Mount |
Hello group ,hope all of you are having a Merry Christmas . I am ready
to build my engine mount for my 601 .I will be using either my newly
purchased 0235 Franklin or my 0200 Cont. (they both fit the same mount).
I have been studying the plans but I could use some more help .Could
anyone on the list send me a picture of a completed 0200 mount or
perhaps a cad drawing showing a 3D view . Thanks Wade Jones South

Subject: | Re: Canopy Gas Struts (Springs) |
Craig,
That compares with a situation the guy in the next hangar told me about.
a guy with a 601 at my field told me this; he forgot to securely latch the canopy
on the right side. After takeoff, he noticed it due to the noise. He attempted
to pull the right side down and latch it securely. This guy is about 6
4 and is a bear of a man. He said he couldnt get it down, so he decided to loosen
the left side so that he could level the canopy and then pull both sides
down and close the latches.
Big Mistake.
He said the canopy immediately went to about 45 degrees and he entered a steep
dive. He was able to reduce power, level off and gain control over the airplane.
At full power, he was not able to climb, as the canopy acted like a speed
brake. At full power, he headed back to the airport at his present level and
was able to land. He said everything that was unsecured (insecured?) err, not
secure, in the airplane departed, including extra headsets, gps, log books,
etc.

P.S. Please don't take this as criticism of the 601 design. The PIC is responsible
for making sure the canopy is secure before takeoff.

The canopy popped while we were in the pattern. I would estimate that the gap was
well over a foot. While the instructor flew I tried to close the canopy. I
wrapped my arm around the cross-bar and used all my weight and strength and could
not close the canopy. At best I think I got the gap down to 6-8 inches. Evector
redesigned the latch the next year.
I believe the upward force was generated by lift and not wind under the canopy
as it did not decrease as I closed the gap.

Carl and Scott,
Thanks for your input -- I'm sure that it may save someone's life. I hope to
never experience this problem! Scott said that Paul Mulwitz, Tony Graziano
and Bob Archibald had some excellent suggestions regarding recovery. I must
have missed those!

Subject: | Re: Aircraft Spruce Streamlined Tubing |
Hi Kevin;
The extruded strut forms from Carlson are teardrop shaped on the outside but in
the area of maximum section thickness there are flats on the inside that are
parallel to each other so that when you clamp on a block or whatever there is
maximum surface contact. In those areas the wall gets thicker because the outside
is curving and the inside walls are flat and parallel.
The drawn tube is just like circular drawn tube except that the section is similar
to streamline steel strut tubing (very nearly constant wall thickness). When
you make the attachments for the end fittings they need to be shaped like the
inside of the drawn tubing or some consideration given to stability of the
joint.
Hoe that is clearer - I may not speak the same english!

So... you need to make a plug to fit inside, to bolt to the wing?

This discussion about the safety of the 601 series wings may or may should be
a matter of concern. Not to me. I have confidence in the design and the
designer. If there are some that would like another layer of security, this country
boy -- clodhopper humbly offers the suggestion that one could construct their
top and bottom wing skins with the next heavier sheet size. It would add a
small increase in weight but would stiffen up the structure somewhat. Many
builders are now doing this in the fuselage without a second thought. Another way
to stiffen the wing would be to add drag braces internally like a rag-wing.
Even I don't think much of that idea.
