I m soooo glad I purchased a QBK.
I would never finish a kit otherwise.
I ve had the QBK since August and today pulled my LAST rivet.
Painting is not too far off....
The only real problem that I ve have with this 601 XL is the main
spar bolts. You might have read here about a week ago that my spar
holes are too big for the 5/16 bolts.
Zenith engineers told me how to solve the situation and they sent
new 3/8 bolts. I think its going to be a real pain trying to ream out
the holes....
Figured I finish everything first and then tackle the holes.

Hey Steve, it sounds like you need to "put the pedal to the metal"
(literally!) and hustle up on your XL so you can GO SOMEWHERE and enjoy
not only your aircraft but to get away from home for a bit. The view
outside should be great.....at least better than here in Michigan! Its
snowing and blowing outside. The clouds have been so low we can't even
THINK about getting off the ground! Has been that way for several
months now.....be glad you don't live here!

Gents,
I wanted to share with you Rotax drivers that I was flying an MQ-1 Predator
over Iraq on Christmas eve when we topped 10,000 flight hours on the airframe,
all on a Rotax 914. Both of our other aircraft here are very close to the 10,000
hour mark as well. It amazes me every night how dependable the engine is
- on our 20+ hour missions.

Read Brandon's post regarding 10,000 hours on Rotax 914, amazing! As a
Rotax 912ULS and CH701SP driver I would really like to know more about
the service interval, oils used (synthetic or blended) and fuel type
(leaded or unleaded). I can't think of a more harsh environment and
experience gained there would be of great help to all the other Rotax
drivers here. Thanks to Brandon for the info..

Steve,
If you can get in there with an of/set drill head my suggestion of
the 11/32 drill bit would make the hole only 1/32 too small and provide
just enough meat to ream to a perfect tight fit. A 23/64 would work I
suppose but not leave much meat to remove and you could over ream. This
process requires a twist or two, then check with a 3/8 bolt until you
just about have to force it in.

Assuming you are keeping them somewhere that they aren't going to be getting wet.
You really don't need to do anything. My wings have been happily sitting in
my hanger for a couple of years and before that the spent some time in a storage
building.
One thing I would suggest though is to seal up any openings so nothing moves in.

Bill,
I hung my parts in the garage ceiling and periodically wiped dust off
them. If you keep them dry, nothing will change the surface appearance,
save nylon belts or support
materials that have colored dye in them. My rudder had a stripe from
black nylon on it, but it was removed with a light rubbed scotch brite.
Clean, etch and rinse only prior to prime and paint. I'd not prime or
paint until needed.

Is there an actual print for that, or am I doomed to "That looks

Hi John;
be careful that water (condensate?) does not get between the shrink wrap and
the structure as it can mar the surface with a very fine corrosion and the steel
rivet mandrel stubs may rust.

Subject: | Re: Rivet, Rivet ! |
There are various close quarters drills and attachments available. I
purchased a used item from Brown Tool,
http://www.browntool.com/productselect.asp?ProductID=680
that attaches to my 3/8 electric drill chuck. The used item is a bit
beat-up, but functions just fine. Brown sells new ones in various price
ranges also. Like most of the really close quarters drills, it doesn't have
a chuck. Rather, it requires bits that are threaded 1/4"x28, which, of
course, Brown also sells, including very short (9/16"-long) bits for really
close quarters. Brown also sells collets which will grip regular drill bits
over a narrow range of diameters. (I put collets on my Christmas list for
#20 & #30. I haven't used them yet.) Though I am barely into wings, there
were a couple of spots on the tail where I used the close quarter drill. It
worked like a champ, but I think I'd want to practice a bit before I
drilled something thick and really critical like wing spar attachment.
Good luck and happy building!

Subject: | 601XL Motor Mount Dimension along 6B6-3 (Corvair) |
Could somebody who has a WW 601XL Motor Mount in hand confirm a dimension for me...?
I'd like to get verification of the distance from "pilot hole center to pilot hole
center" on 6B6-3 (the Firewall Side Stiffener).
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I've attached a couple of drawings that
show exactly what I'm looking for.
I have calculated this distance needs to be 476 mm, and my pilot holes seem to
bear this out.
But still, I'd sure feel better if I knew for sure what the center-to-center distance
is on an actual Corvair motor mount actually is. I couldn't find this
in the archives anyplace, and I don't have an actual WW motor mount in hand yet
to measure for myself.
Thanks,

The prop manufacturer for my 3-blade Warpdrive suggested a 12-degree pitch.
Set at 12-degrees, the maximum RPM the 701 can develop is 5375-RPM. The
plane seems to fly well with this setting. At cruise RPM (4900-5000) is goes
85-90-MPH and at full RPM, lightly loaded, it will reach the do-not-exceed
speed in level flight and climbs over 1400'/minute.
I'm satisfied with the performance but am concerned that I can't get to the
maximum 5600-5800 RPM that Rotax suggests. Do you think I'm OK with the 5375
maximum RPM, or should I decrease the prop pitch?
Thanks for the help,
Les

Pat,
The motor mount I purchased from WW was not exactly the same as the holes in
my firewall which were to Zenith spec. I called William and he said the
mounts have some spring in them and to pull it into position, it worked just
as he said. I no longer have the Corvair engine and mount so I can't measure
how far it was out but I think it was about 2 or 3mm. I decided to go with a
Continental because my family said they would not fly with me if I used the
Corvair, not because of any concern on my part.

Subject: | 601 xl flying in general |
Guys and Ladies and anything else,
I have been reading the past few weeks the emails from some trying to redesign
the 601xl. I am reporting to you now that I have 60 plus hours on the 601xl with
a Jabiru and some thoughts you should take as you complete your steeds:
These apply to the first time builders mostly, not the seasoned warriors on this
page:
1- Build the plane according to the blue prints, if you want to play around with
the design, be my guest just realize that a small change in plans, has a big
change in performance, not like a car!
2- The saying "a little is good and alot is better" does not apply to airplane
design. The designer did not double the thickness on the skin of the wings for
a reason. You are NOT building an RV or an EXTRA 300.
3- Fly the plane according to the specs, example- VNE 160, Manauvering speed 103,
cruise(NOT manauvering) speed 130, etc.
ITs OK to yank and bank, just do it at the right weight and speed. That applies
to any aircraft P-51 to a zenith. The design has a wide envelope of capabilities,
and yanking and banking at 93 mph with 20 gallons on board, is NOT doable
at cruise speed (130-140mph).
4- If the plane is telling you something, listen to it.
a flutter is not oil canning, etc.
5- The plane is not a TOY or a CAR, if you have doubts about your skills, treat
the plane appropriately.
I am now comfortable enough aftyer the fly off period to take my 4 year old on
weekend trips all over the south east. I waited until I was comfortable, and
I have 25 years of flying in me. Build the plane like you would want your kids
to fly in it.
6- the check list is your Best friend!
I have taken off too many times over the years in haste and forgotten things which
may have caused serious problems and if I had followed the check list for
preflight, I would not have had the problems.
Example- cover still on Pitot tube, hence no airspeed at take off, Engine burping
and stalling at take off, which was clearly caused by this pilot forgeting
to drain the water out of the tank. SAved by practicing to turn on pump and
switch the tanks, this would have been averted if I followed the check list!
The 601xl is a very fun plane to fly and this family enjoys it and will for years
to come. I now undterstand why this design has been around for over 25 years
and not much has changed on it. Reminds me of the Colt 45, used in the modern
day, but designed in 1905. What I mean to imply is, a good design is a great
design, when used in within the envelope it was designed for.
Happy New Year

Subject: | Re: Prop-pitch; 701 w/Rotax 912ULS |
Les,
The inability to get to the highest rpm the engine is capable of is
probably the wrong approach. You should consider that your performance
optimized
to an rpm that mixes fuel economy, low engine wear and less noise. I'd
increase the prop pitch to the lowest rpm that still reaches the
do-not-exceed
speed and still gives satisfactory climb with a passenger. Sounds like
you're close, but try 13 and then 14 degrees to see how performance changes.

Subject: | Alternate Canopy Latching System |
Netters,
Someone, (I think his name was Richard.) on this forum asked me to
describe how I changed my canopy latching system from the original
Zenith design. I am still trying to figure out why I lost everything in
my incoming mail but I did so for whoever that was, here is the
information you ask for.
Richard,
Of course I can, that's what this forum is all about. From picture
#1, look closely and you will see I had to make a space in the side
covering for the oak block. Also the block must be cut in such a was as
to fit the inside surface of the fuselage yet come up to the level of
the flange where the canopy comes down. The upper block is just a block
and requires no fitting however it must be thick enough where both
surfaces match (drawing below) In picture #3 the ring in the bottom of
the lower latch is clear. Be sure to buy the latches with the ring. In
picture #4 the safety pin is clearly seen, this is to insert in the ring
after the latch is latched to prevent opening. The safety pin is just a
large nail sawed off, one end flatted out and a hole for the string
drilled in it. After the two blocks are installed, the next step is to
power sand the two surfaces with the canopy closed so that the two
surfaces match.

I am now building a 601 XL, Not yet in the canopy area... But one thing is important
in any airplane: Doesnt matter how overbuilt or extra safety is any
canopy or door lock of any airplane, will fail if the pilot will not follow
the checklists in every one of the points.
Also lets remember that only the wiser men can design simple and light.
Any one can desing a complicate and heavy what ever, just need to keep "thinking"

Now back... We all have to go through every check list routine the same every

[quote="rsteele(at)rjsit.com"]I think it's worth pointing out that, in fact, even
if the design is flawed, the designer of an experimental aircraft isn't responsible
for the airplane, the builder is. That's why it's an experimental. It's
a responsibility that's all to easy to ignore for us kit
builders, but it's the reality and something we shouldn't forget.
Sounds like there needs to be a checklist item for these latches -
another builder responsibility.
Perhaps we should all test the strut strength before installation.
This is the type of discussion that makes this list so valuable. It
must have been really lonely being a builder before the days of the
internet.

Subject: | Mounting wheel pants? |
Gang:
I am at the point to installing the inboard wheel pants hardware for the
new style 601XL wheel pants (5.00x5 tires). It seems to me that the
attachment points do not offer a lot of support to the pants, which is
backed up by the (subjectively) wobbly pants I have seen on many XL's,
and by the comparatively massive inboard pant brackets used on the (bit
faster) RV's.
I was considering riveting a horizontal arm to the .050 steel inboard
bracket, probably from 30mm wide x 0.090 aluminum, to place additional
#10 nutplates 4" forward and aft of the axle. There also would be .032
reinforcing plates, maybe 50 x 50 mm, riveted to the inside of the pants
at these points.
Anyone done something like this already and can report on effectiveness?

I would reduce the pitch slightly. I am assuming that your max RPM is 5375

be
getting approx 5350-5400 static RPM. Right now it seems you are over pitched

figure if I'm "malfunctioned" out of the plane I can borrow an allen

My 701 rotax 912
usually two up on acceletation and climb gets 5600rpm a compromise of
climb and cruise 70-75 knots.
you should try for 5800 on acceleration and climb.
then check your other figures.
NB. two up every thing is much differant speed and climb wise
you should find in level flight you will over rev if you hold full
throttle.

Subject: | Re: 601XL - Making More Leg Room...? |
Pat,
I've been late in reading the list lately, so I'm slow in responding
to your post. I'm a tall feller and find my knees in the dash panel in
nearly every plane I climb into. The factory 601 wasn't the worst, but still
too tight for optimal comfort. I very carefully measured, calculated, and
consulted Zenith about repositioning the entire rudder channell forward to
fit me better. To fully evaluate this, you must look at the intended neutral
rudder pedal position, which is more aft than you might think. I ultimately
moved the entire assembly forward 60mm (2 3/8"). I can now sit in the
cockpit, and all is well. I had to shave the rudder pedals slightly to clear
the firewall in the most extreme position, and you would never encounter
this position in flight, only while braking during taxi. At 2" forward, even
this minor mod. wouldn't be necessary. My floor pan was predrilled, so I
had to fill the unused holes with rivets. My firewall slots were cut as per
plans, and still fit the steering rods exactly. Zenith had no problem at
all with this change.

Subject: | Re: Mounting wheel pants? |
Hi Andy
I thought the same when I installed my 601 XL pants. I didnt add a
brace like you mentioned but did think about it. I would do it if I
were doing it again. The pants are extremely thin and I wound up adding
extra layers of fiberglass inside to make the pants more ridged.

Subject: Zenith-List: Mounting wheel pants?
Gang:
I am at the point to installing the inboard wheel pants hardware for
the new style 601XL wheel pants (5.00x5 tires).
Anyone done something like this already and can report on
effectiveness?
Thanks,

I talked to Ronnie Smith, and my understanding is that dragging the engine down
too much can cause possible cracking of the crank case. In other words don't
pitch the prop so much that the engine can't wind up to near the recommended
RPM on full throttle.

Excellent. That helps me. Thanks.

Subject: | Alternate Canopy Latching System |
Hi Robert,
I will be honest and direct with you.
I think your installation for canopy could be secure but very
uncomfortable
for yours passengers at the level of the shoulder and under certain
badly
circumstances, like an hard landing or incident of that kind could
injure
your passengers.

Objet : Zenith-List: Alternate Canopy Latching System
Netters,
Someone, (I think his name was Richard.) on this forum asked me to
describe how I changed my canopy latching system from the original
Zenith
design. I am still trying to figure out why I lost everything in my
incoming mail but I did so for whoever that was, here is the information
you
ask for.
Richard,
Of course I can, that's what this forum is all about. From picture
#1,
look closely and you will see I had to make a space in the side covering
for
the oak block. Also the block must be cut in such a was as to fit the
inside surface of the fuselage yet come up to the level of the flange
where
the canopy comes down. The upper block is just a block and requires no
fitting however it must be thick enough where both surfaces match
(drawing
below) In picture #3 the ring in the bottom of the lower latch is
clear.
Be sure to buy the latches with the ring. In picture #4 the safety pin
is
clearly seen, this is to insert in the ring after the latch is latched
to
prevent opening. The safety pin is just a large nail sawed off, one end
flatted out and a hole for the string drilled in it. After the two
blocks
are installed, the next step is to power sand the two surfaces with the
canopy closed so that the two surfaces match.

Christian,
I have flown a good many hours with the canopy system shown in my
e-mail and also carried some 20 plus passengers and have yet to hear any
complaints.
