Subject: | 701 Elevator Cable Balancing |
I am currently flying my Phase 1 test hours. One thing I noticed is a
tendency for the stick to move to the left. I don't think this is a heavy
left wing, but rather the elevator cable tension caused by the elevator
bellcrank being off-center. This is a common issue with the 701 and has
been discussed in the archives. I have installed the bungee as instructed
and it helps, but the control stick still favors moving to the left side.
In searching the archives, I found one builder who installed a nylon
fairlead on the back bottom of the baggage compartment for the upper
cable (that is, the upper cable at the aileron bellcrank 7C1-1. This
cable goes to the bottom of the elevator) to run through. In
experimenting, this solution does a better job at evening the control
stick balance between left and right. For any of you that have installed
such a fairlead, is this a good solution? Have you had any issues with
the side pull on the aileron bellcrank that such a fairlead would
produce? How long does the nylon fairlead last before wearing through?
Have you had any problems with using such a fairlead? Any things to look
out for?
My issue with the bungee is that, to completely balance the stick, my
upper cable (at the bellcrank) is pulled so far to the starboard side
that it hits the flaperon control threaded rod. Also, my lower cable just
brushes the 7F6-1 bottom channel. I can add a piece of nylon on top of
the bottom channel but I would prefer that the cable doesn't rub it at
all. I have also considered remaking the aileron bellcrank with a
slightly raised lower hole, but this will affect the elevator travel.
If others have different solutions (in lieu of the bungee), I would be
interested in reading and seeing those solutions. Thanks!

All: Yesterday I went to get my Repairman Inspection Authorization from
the local FSDO. This took over an hour for some reason. Anyway while I
was there, he asked if I had a construction checklist for my airplane
(701). He said Zenith should have provided or made available one.
Apparently this checklist is something you sign or check off each time
you complete an assembly. I can find no such thing. Does anyone have a
clue what he was talking about?
Also he pointed out some errors my DAR made when he issued my Special
Airworthiness Certificate. Hopefully that will not come back to bite me
somehow.
I did receive my Inspection Authorization but it appears the FAA could
use some better organization to speed up the process. It is totally
asinine the amount of nitpicking they do or at least are required to do.

Dan,
Looks like every FSDO might be different. Did mine via the US mail. The guy called
me and wanted me to send in a copy of my builders log. About two weeks
later, along came my certificate.
Painless.
Mine was the Atlanta FSDO.

There's a checklist at the start of each section of my 601HDS manual.
Wonder if that's what he's talking about? Definitely chickenshit, because
you could check things off before you ever completed them!

At the Detroit FSDO all he wanted to see is the construction logbook
with photos and the aircraft registration. You need to show evidence
that you were actually the person that built the airplane.

Instead of the bungee(which I think is to keep the cables from rubbing
together??) I slipped a long length of vinyl tubing over one of the
cables and then just let them rub. I will inspect that cable for
corrosion under the tubing annually but don't really expect to find any.
I also put a rub guard on the lower crossmember you mention. I am
running my down cable as loose as I can stand it to avoid binding with
right aileron application, particularly with flaps extended.

Dan,
I know it's only semantics, but you did not get a "Repairman Inspection
Authorization". Technically, there is no such privilege. You may
perform a *"Condition Inspection" *on a specific aircraft built by you,
the certificate holder as per FAR 65.104. Inspection Authorizations are
only available to A&P mechanics who have been active for a minimum of 3
years.

Subject: | Re: 912 Service Bulletin |
Hi Joe,
I have enjoyed reading your posts on the Zenith list for the last couple of years.
I have the 912ULS and got the Service Bulletin about the Gearbox. Fortunately,
our S/N is not included in the affected gearboxes.
I think that Rotax has experienced a lot of growth in the markets they serve with
the 912/914 engines. It looks to me like they are the victim of suppliers
who might not have met the material specifications for component parts. This
sounds like a lot of the same problems that Lycoming and Continental experienced
over the last several decades.
I do hope that Rotax steps up to the plate and helps the affected owners with repairs.
I am glad though that Rotax is doing the things necessary to keep the owners up
to date about problems and letting us know what to do to correct those problems
(I may sing a different tune when/if I have to shell our $$$$ to fix problems
:) ). What if we didn't have this resource to let us know about problems?
Flying is an expensive hobby isn't it? !

this one is real...I have one that's been in service for 1 Year 2 months with

the kind of BS that drives people out of aviation.

"Repairman Experimental Aircraft Builder" is the wording on the card
indicating your authorization as a repairman.
On the back of the card it will list the specific aircraft that the card
applies to.
My FAA rep emphasized the specific wording that needs to be entered into
the aircraft log book on the annual condition inspections and the need
to keep accurate records of deficiencies found and the work performed to
remedy the situation.

Yes sir I can..
Zenith sells them and the right to build a set.. They can also send you a kit of
all the parts needed.
When I looked at all the little individual bits needed, I figured it would cost
less in $ to buy the kit than spend my time and petrol running around getting
the stuff.
Have a look at the photo guides as a start.
