No mine fit great . You might check to be sure you have the proper distance
from the first rivet line as in the plans and also be sure your ribs are
square with the spar. It sounds like you have the skin too far inboard and because
they taper you are coming up long if that makes sense.
If you need anymore help drop me a e mail off list.

Aviators NEVER quit.
Years ago, we fellow (poor) student pilots went without 50 cent lunches
just to have the eight dollars it took for that one hour flight every
two weeks. Even at eight bucks per hour it was expensive. I made $80
a week working in a lumber yard. Paid rent, raised one child and
supported my housewife.
My point is: if you really want it, you will find a way.
Build one small part at a time....
Your rudder is done. Next build a rib.....
Next week build another rib.

There have many excellent messages about the perils and use of Ethanol in
our aircraft but so far, all we've talked about is the problems. I don't
see Ethanol going away, the problem is just going to get worse. As the
owner of both a certified and experimental planes, I would like some advi

from the experts as to how we can cope with it.
The Ellison carb seems to be one solution for carbonation. Would a fuel
pump and vapor return lines take care of vapor lock? One gentleman sugge
sts
a diesel engine is the solution. Not too many options here. Gaskets and
o-rings of different materials should be easy to solve. Reduction in pow

and range is simple, pilot education. For certified aircraft, STC's wil

be expensive but a must. FAA may have to rethink some of their regs to h

solve this but I'll bet the experimental society will get their first.

Hi Steve,
I soundproofed my 601 cabin last summer and it was necessary to put
"EXPERIMENTAL" in vinyl, centered on the top skin, just inside the canopy.
It looks nice and is very readable when entering the aircraft via steps.

There's a simple solution. Compare the skins with the prints. If they
match within 2mm, your problem lies elsewhere.

Subject: | Re: Searching for the cure, Ethanol |
The EAA and AOPA keep pushing state legislatures to exempt premium
gasoline from the laws requiring ethanol so that at least some
gasoline will be available for use in applications that won't tolerate
alcohol. This effort is helped by the fact that airplanes aren't the
only application where alcohol can't be used. Many types of watercraft
can't use alcohol contaminated gas either due to their fiberglass fuel
tanks and other parts of the fuel system that won't tolerate alcohol.
A lot of older lawn and garden equipment and farm implements weren't
designed for alcohol either. We should have those industries on our
side as well. Then there's the fact that very few people use premium
gas in their cars, which should help minimize any objections to this
idea. If the watercraft industry can convince the governments to
exempt marine gasoline, you might be able to get your aircraft fuel
from the local marina. If these efforts fail, the only alternative
might be to burn avgas and possibly use a lead scavenger. This might
be the issue that drives a demand for the new 82UL avgas. The EAA
spent a great deal of effort pushing for the creation of 82UL but it
doesn't seem to be available anywhere yet.
If you want to burn alcohol fuel in your airplane, design the thing to
run on E85 and use that. Otherwise, make an effort to find and use
straight gasoline. Mixing small amounts of alcohol in gasoline is just
a bad idea.

Subject: | ethanol in auto gas |
If anyone wants some detailed information on what ethanol will do to a fuel
system, and what ethanol is doing to the planet, rather than print it here,
E-mail me off list and I will send you some information.
In Wisconsin, ethanol has done over a million dollars worth of damage to
cars in the Milwaukee area due to plugged up fuel injectors. Boats in
Minnesota where ethanol is manditory have their fiberglass fuel tanks
disolve over time leaking fuel into the keel. The Oshkosh ethanol plant has
been sited for excess polution from the ethanol plant and fined. Ethanol
producers can't say that their produce burned clean like they use to. It
doesn't. Ethanol produces aldyhides when it burns and it turns out their
cancerous! The largest saturation of aldyhides happends to be in Brazil!
Unfortunately, we were all lied to by the corn lobby and our government has
let the genie out of the bottle! EAA is fighting hard to stop the ethanol
mandates. One of the Zenith competitors decided to take a big chunk of money
from the ethanol people and design a "green" airplane, and slapped EAA right
in the face with it at the last airshow.
Here in Wisconsin, the cost of milk has doubled, most foods at the grocery
store have increased dramaticly, even Budweiser is having trouble finding
hopps because of the corn craze. Ethanol in Wisconsin is hurting the poor
who can't afford the price increases. Has anyone noticed our politicians are
not mentioning corn ethanol when talking about renewable resources? Even
National Geographic didn't have much good to say about corn ethanol.
In Wisconsin, our legislative leaders voted down the law to make ethanol
manditory, but I'm sure it will come up again. The corn lobby is strong. But
here in Wisconsin, the pumps must be marked if ethanol is sold. We can still
pick our gas stations. They tried to remove that law but the EAA stepped in
and said no.
By the way, Yamaha snowmobiles have found a way to use ethanol. If you know
there is ethanol in the fuel, you can change a wire under the engine cover
and the engine will run fine! It fools the little computer and causes the
engine to run full rich to keep it cool! How about that!
Stay away from this stuff.
Joe

Hi Randy,
I haven't seen or heard much from you recently on the Zenith list. I hope
you are doing well.
Unless I mess up a part (which could always happen!), I think I'm done using
your flanging dies. They have been a great help, and worked so well.
Thanks for the extended use.
I'll be glad to ship them back to you, or I can also hold on to them until
another builder contacts you for their use. Then I could ship them direct,
saving you the postage. It is your call.
Just let me know.
Thank you, again.

Make an ethanol tester. Find a used olive jar. One of those skinny ones with
a screw on cap. Put a mark about one inch from the bottom. Fill to the mark
with water. Fill the rest with the fuel to be tested, screw cap on and shake. If
the "water line" rises, it means that alcohol has combined with the water and
the presence of alcohol is confirmed. You can also buy the same tester
professionally made by Peterson Aviation ( www.autofuelstc.com ) for $15.00.
Ethanol has no place in an airplane for all the reasons stated. Also ethanol
is much more likely to vapor lock at altitudes above those altitudes used by
ag planes. Stay with 100LL if in doubt and put the gas that fails the test into
your pick up truck.

I could definitely use them for a week or so. I just need to make up two
parts to mount my landing & taxi lights. I haven't designed the part yet,
but each will have a lightening hole. I was about to make some wooden ones,
but I would be happy to pay shipping to borrow yours.

Subject: | corvair core available |
Hello;
I am going to have to eliminate one of my Corvair cores. I do not want to make
any money on it but I do want to recover the $200 I paid for it. I am in Zipcode
19438 in southeastern PA.
The case is 1208RH and one of the heads with the tin off is 3878566 - the other
head still is covered by the tin.
The core includes a distributer and still has the exhaust logs. I do not know what
the actual internal condition is as I never pulled the top cover or the jugs.
If anyone is interested, contact me off line. I would like to sell it for pick
up only - and I would really like to see it go into a 601XL since that was my
plan before my life took a dump.
(I have not totally given up - I am keeping my other core - for now, until I must
sell it as well)
Thanks.

as you described. That whole general area of the build was a real pain-in-the-backside
as I recall. Added a whole new layer on the aluminum scrap heap
before I finally got through it.

Hey Larry:
Glad the dies have worked ok with you. I think I remember you were
building a 601, is that right? Was there a hole that required flanging
in the 601 that my dies wouldn't work in? One that would require
"trimming" of the dies to fit between flanges or something. Builder
Larry Husky in Oregon advised me there is such a hole.
Anyway, for the moment, hang onto the dies. there were some other
builders looking for them, but I can't remember who they were. I don't
require them at the moment.
If one of my dies does require trimming to accomplish a hole, I need
input and measurements so I or someone can do the alteration. I already
trimmed the smallest die to do a hole in the 701, but I don't have the
info for the 601.
Anyway, please hold onto the dies for the time being until we receive
further orders.
Best regards,
Randy, Las Vegas

Hi Randy,
I haven't seen or heard much from you recently on the Zenith list. I
hope you are doing well.
Unless I mess up a part (which could always happen!), I think I'm done
using your flanging dies. They have been a great help, and worked so
well. Thanks for the extended use.
I'll be glad to ship them back to you, or I can also hold on to them
until another builder contacts you for their use. Then I could ship
them direct, saving you the postage. It is your call.
Just let me know.
Thank you, again.

Hey Larry:
If you don't get a better offer, my "iron" dies are available.
They are
currently in the "custody" of Builder John Bolding in Texas who is
finished
with them and awaiting shipping instructions. It is the three die
set that
needs to stay together, but it is my understanding that the three
dies will
fit in a postal flat rate box and ship for under ten bucks.
Let me know if you want them.

Hello Terry:
I have sent you a photo of the dies in use by private message. Let me
know if they look like something you can use.
Regards,
Randy, Las Vegas

I could definitely use them for a week or so. I just need to make up
two parts to mount my landing & taxi lights. I haven't designed the part
yet, but each will have a lightening hole. I was about to make some
wooden ones, but I would be happy to pay shipping to borrow yours.

Wow! When I started this I knew they wanted things to be exact. I was
cutting out the template for the firewall and one of the measurement was
243.8. Now that's tough to do when the lead on my pencil measures .7

I had the same question when I started plotting my form blocks. Here is what Nick
from Zenith had to say:
"Please refer to the CS for tolerances. Please understand that we had to increase
the precision on some parts in the drawings to meet the diligent expectation
of builder who have access to CAD software. It is not necessary that parts
be cut on a CNC machine."
The tightest tolerance is 0.5mm on wing rib heights, everything else is 1 to 2
mm as I recall.
Glenn.

Thanks Kevin!
What is interesting from the photos is that the seat backs are not supported
by the baggage area like in the 701. In fact, it looks almost like there
could be room for a baby seat back there.
