<<There are 4 flights on the Corvair powered 701 since its first flight on Feb. 2nd.>> See balance of comments below and at http://flywithgus.com/page4.html Congratulations Gus! I also want to take the opportunity to mention here that Gus provided extremely helpful support to me by traveling down to Palm Beach Gardens and helping me install the engine, cowling, electrical, fit the wings and cut the canopy for my 601XL. If it weren't for his expert advise and skills, I would have never been able to complete this project before the deadline of January 31, 2008 (at that time the imposed deadline was for E-LSA type aircraft--that requirement has now been extended 2 years if you were able to get it registered before the Jan 31 deadline). He would continue working even when I was completely exhausted and just sat staring at what he was doing! In addition, I am also planning on having Gus do the First Flight because of his depth of knowledge of the 601XL and the Corvair engine (an engine that was practically hand built by both William Wynne and Kevin Fahy -- thank you gentlemen for a really beautiful engine!). I feel extremely confident in both the aircraft and the engine because of the type of people that have been instrumental in helping me get it completed. I'm looking forward to the first flight around the 15th of this month. There are 4 flights on the Corvair powered 701 since its first flight on Feb. 2nd. All the flying is going well with only a few squawks to take care of. Real performance numbers will come as quickly as the weather will allow. For an example, if you look at Massey Ranch, Edgewater FL on google maps in satellite mode, know that it will be airborne from the taxiway at the end of 18 before it gets to the displaced threshold, with me and full fuel. Guys and gals, I am scratch building and last night I cut out my spar root fitting (I don't have the number right in front of me) for my 701. It is 3 /16" 2024 T4 aluminum, and I used an angle grinder with a cut-off wheel to make the rough cut, and then finished it with a disk sander, and finally a hand file. Turned out pretty nice if I must say so myself :) However, I'm now sitting here at work thinking about what I had done last night, and I am now wondering; could I have heated the bar stock up enough to change the temper? It never got extremely hot, but it was too hot to hold onto. It air cooled from that point. I'm not real familiar with the heat treatment of aluminum, so I thought I would post the question here. Any thoughts, or am I just being too worried?

I'm no expert on metallurgy, this is just information I've picked from my personal research: The "T4" means the metal has been solution heat treated and then allowed to naturally age harden. The heat treatment takes place at 300=BA-450=BAC. I don't think you'll effect the strength of the metal much unless you heat it above 300=BAC. A saw blade will generally work better than a grinding wheel for cutting aluminum. The grinder tends to load up with aluminum, which slows down the process and generates a lot of heat. A band saw is ideal but I've found that even a hack saw works better than a grinder in most cases. Some people say a circular saw with a laminate blade works well also but a face shield is mandatory equipment. Hi Ryan, Don't worry, you didn't hurt the 2024. It is common practice at Delta TechOps and Northrop Grumman to trim aluminum parts on-wing with a die grinder and thin cutoff wheel then final trim with a 90 degree die grinder and 50 then 120 grit sanding disk. I'm sure it is done elsewhere in industry. Even in this CNC era, a lot of jets have "trim to fit" in the drawing notes. At Delta, it was normal to leave aluminum fittings on composite parts that were being repaired with a hotbonder at 350F for several hours, as long as the fitting was not directly under the repair. 300F was considered a safe cutoff for the aluminum part. For metalbond repairs, 2024T3 is directly heated to 200F for several hours to cure the film adhesive. A metal cutting blade in a jigsaw works really well. I have a horizontal/vertical bandsaw and I still wind up using the jigsaw all the time. There is only one way to eliminate this type of problem in the future, but this List is not the proper place to comment further. Had this happened to me, I would have tried to handle it personally, rather then going to the cops, where nothing is going to be done about it anyway. I feel compelled to respond, so I will end my discussion, and thread with the following. Officer Husky, It was not my intention to insinuate that you, or any of our other " finest " were not doing everything possible, to get their jobs as best as they could. Simply, that there is so much serious, rampant, crime going on these days, ( check CNN, another half dozen shot today ) that sadly this type of crime could definitely not be one of the top priorities. That being said, even if the guilty party was found, and turned out to be an underage juvenile, the worst he can expect to get is a slap on the wrist anyway. I bet that would put a stop to these pranks of his, yeah what ever ! As for my Superman shirt, you can borrow it anytime, I'm too old, and weak to wear it anyway and to you Larry, as for your slap on Officers Husky's back, I don't think he really needed it, and neither did I. back to building planes... I put the David Navone Noise Supressor circuit on My Becker radio and to my suprise, I still have radio noise. I have surmised it is ignition noise probably from the spark plugs or the cables. Has any one had noise in the radio due to ignition noise and did you get insulated cables? Any thoughts ladies? Am sorry to hear it didn't work for you. The noise filter totally cured my noise problem. If I would have thought about it, I would have had you try your radio with a separate motorcycle battery like I did to affirm the noise was coming thru my power line. Your noise must be coming from an "airborne" source. I didn't have any noise when i used the MC battery so new it was coming thru the power line. You find them on E-Bay at reasonable prices/bids. > I just checked E-bay and the cheapest new is $199. Used fans with questionable reliability are $35 to $65. A new fan from Radio Shack would be $17.99. 'Nuf said. Dan Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=162940#162940

While I also question the need, an alternative fan that would move a fair amount of air would be a marine bilge blower fan, had from West Marine for about $30. Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=162942#162942
