I bought the Harbor Freight powder coating system and a used oven. The used

I plan to make my instrument panel from carbon fiber. Doing that should save
a little weight but the main reason is it just looks "cool". My son made an
instrument panel for his Weedhopper using the material and it really good
looking. He laid up the cf on a sheet of glass. It required no finishing and is
really smooth.
I also made the fuel tanks for my XL and his Weedhopper from the same
material. My XL is not flying yet but the Weedhopper tank has 18 months and about
60 hours service with no problems. I can get a picture of the Weedhopper panel
today and send it to you if you would like.

Zenith Listers,
While flying from Zephyrhills, FL to Goldsboro, NC, my CFI abandoned me
and my CH701 near Folkston, GA. I had the good fortune of finding Bill
who lives near by in Valdosta, GA.
The Rotax 912 ULS developed a problem with the fuel pump. Lockwood made
an overnight delivery with new pump. Thanks Lockwood! I returned home
to NC and left the plane in Folkston.
I quickly determined that Bill would be a great asset. Bill is a
licensed A & P and also a CFI. Great combination. He drove over to
Folkston with gas for the CH701, installed the new fuel pump and flew
the plane to Goldsboro.
During the flight, he confirmed some numbers for landing and Vx/Vy
speeds. He also monitored temperatures and instrument performance. A
great job.
I highly recommend Bill. He did a great job bringing my CH701 home.
Again, many thanks Bill.

Dear Carroll,
If it was my powder coat gun that had quit, you can take it to the bank, I WOULD be getting it either replaced, OR repaired. You always have options. If your local Harbor Freight is ignoring you, I suggest you call their main office Customer Service at 800-444-3353 or you can go on line and chat "live" with a representative. State your case and see what they do to help you get back to powder coating. You probably just got that "one in a million" lemon gun. They should take care of it for you Here is their website for the live chat: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/cs.taf
Let us all know how you make out with your resolution and thanks for your input.
Its greatly appreciated!

The requirement for the shorter phase 1 test period is
a certified engine and prop combination. I don't know if
the consensus standard for SLSA would allow using the same
prop AMD uses with their 0-200 to qualify for the shorter
test period.

I dunno Stan. For me...the door vents are plenty. I would think hard about giving
up that valuable real estate on the panel. My 701 is not that air tight
anyhow thus I get plenty of fresh air. That's just my two cents...

Subject: | Re: Firewall Forward fuel and oil lines |
Hi Doug,
I thought you would get more feed-back on your request. When I got my 701/912S
it had standard auto fuel lines with screw clamps and fire sleeve. It looked nice
but I was not comfortable with it. The Oil lines were what the factory supplied
with the kit. The oil lines looked and Im sure were very acceptable as compared
to the fuel line. At annual this year it was time to replace all the hoses,
fuel, oil and water. I spent a little time searching for a solution that
met what I thought was aircraft quality but did not want to spend the money (and
I thought was an overkill) for a complete certified aircraft system. So here
is what Ive decided to do.
Fuel: I went with MIL-DTL-6000(old MIL-H-6000B) from Genuine Aircraft Hardware
Co. (www-gen-aircraft-hardware.com/888-247-2738). Its a push-on/screw clamp system
that dose not require any special or expensive hose ends. Its has a working
pressure of 500PSI and a burst pressure of 1000PSI, it is also compatible with
oil, coolant, alcohol, fuel and water. I think its much better than the original
NAPA fuel hose. I then added fire sleeve and I dont worry about a cracked
line leaking fuel anymore.
Oil: I went with the Parker HI-Temp Push-Lok #836-8 P.N 181411 oil line from California Power systems (www.800-airwolf.com/800-247-9653). Its not an aircraft part per-say but after reading through the parker (www.parker.com) web site I was comfortable that it was a good industrial hose that would do the job. Again its a push-on/screw clamp system just like the factory system requiring no new expensive fittings.
Water: I went with Flexfab (www.flexfab.com) Silicone Hose P.N. 5526-100 for the Radiator hoses and 5526-075 for the cyl-head to tank/water pump hoses on the engine. It has a burst pressure of 175 to 200PSI. I got the 55-26-100 from Zenith and the other from a local supplies in Bakersfield.
I hope this is of some help to you.

Subject: | 601 HDS where to position the pitot and aileron trim |
Hello fellow Listers
I'm about to finish the left outer wing panel of my HDS.
Does any of the gents here know where to position my pitot tube?
I intended to place it just outboard of rib #7 behind the main spar. Does that
sound reasonable?
Same question with the aileron trim tab. I intend to place it between rib #8 and#9.
Is there any advantage/disadvantage between a recessed style Trim tab and
a board (like on Larry Mc's website) ?

Hello Stan,
Here we have some heat in the summer, mainly when we fly to the coast... but
once you are a few 1,000s ft up the temperature outside always get a little
cooler, this is all over the world. When taxi, I open de door, once flying the
little round vents can provide enough air I need to feel confortable, summer
or winter (yes, we need a little opening in winter).
No need for extra vents (weight). every weight saved in construction will later
convert to gasoline, a little luggage or some snacks...

Hi Peter,
The things I considered for the trim tab were, is it easy to repair or
resize. The one I have is very effective, so
it's hardly noticed when you begin flying and or have people walking the
plane. Simple.
The pitot was mounted on a disk and attached just forward of the spar,
first spar hole outside the leading edge tanks.

http://www.macsmachine.com/images/wing/pilelerouting/full/pitot-&-electrical-standoff.gif
Seems steady enough and is easily inspected. Added access port Tees
within the wing joint for checking the
transponder and altimeter.

Thanks Craig. I DO have WW Conversion Manual and have been reading it. I did
buy walnut shells to clean the aluminum with but do realize I need to stay away
from all mating surfaces where the two halves of the block come together and
the bores where the cylinders go in. Is there any place else I should be aware
of?
I wasn't sure if the walnut shells could be used as a general purpose blasting
media or not. I already had a local transmission shop clean up my block parts
and they do look great. I need to take the carb cleaner and stiff brush to
the crevices yet and then I will blast the aluminum to bring out the brightness.
I am learning a ton of things about the Corvair Conversion and finding it
not only interesting but fun.
I've never powder coated before either so this is all new for me also. I do
have an electric stove located, I just need to wire up the 220 for it in the garage.
I'm afraid to go out and buy the wire needed for it because I'm afraid
I will lose my first born child with the high costs of wire these days....LOL.
I do have one question that maybe you could answer for me though. Just before
powder coating, what is the "conversion" that Mark L was talking about just
prior to painting the parts? I assume its either some form of cleaner or an acid
etch, correct? Hopefully in a couple of weeks here, I'll have freshly powder
coated parts to show off. From what I can understand of it, this process
has the potential to make me look like I really know what I'm doing!
Thanks for the help everyone - I'm learning!

Thanks for the info Ken. I wasn't sure if walnut shells would do the steel
parts or not. Until I decided to do the Corvair Conversion, I honestly
never heard of using walnut shells before so this part is all new to me. I
DID buy the fine walnut shells, thinking if nothing else, I can use it as a
"finishing blast". I'll go down tomorrow and get a bag of silica sand for
the steel parts.
I'm going to try something I've never done before and that is powder
coating. I bought a powder coating gun and powder paint at Harbor Freight.
It was a fraction of the cost there, compared to Sears. I'm looking for a
used gas stove to bake the parts in. I was looking for a primer to apply to
the parts prior to powder coating. My brother in law told me he didn't
think I needed a primer, just only an acid etch to lock up the rust. I have
that already, just not sure if I should or shouldn't use some type of primer
first. Any ideas on that one?
I'll be the first to admit here, I am a newbie. I have a lot to learn and
hopefully, I can get some really good information just from asking the right
questions.
Any and all help is of course, GREATLY appreciated!

Hey Guys & Gals: I have decided to sell my Jabiru powered (3300) 601 HD. It
first flew in 2004 and now has just short of 150 hrs. Annual will be this
month, and it goes to the paint shop on the 15th. So if you know anyone looking
for a great airplane (Sport Pilot elegible) if they act now, they can pick
the final colors and paint scheme.
I am still working on a price, but it will be in the 50K range.
Email me off list if you know of someone who may be interested.

Well certainly avoid the whole block and anything with an oil passage. I
can't see any reason why you can't blast the sheet metal parts like the
valve covers, baffles and shrouds. If you look at the bottom of William's
home page the is a box for searching. A search on "sandblasting" pulled up
this from the 2003 Q&A:
"The 2002 Conversion Manual contains an extensive section on cleaning
techniques. In short, never sandblast anything on the motor. This
restriction includes glass beading. The only acceptable blast media would be
Walnut shells or plastic. Glass or sand will upraise and destroy the fit
under the bearing shells, in the lifter bores and on the mating surfaces.
Gunk engine cleaner, pressure washing and carb cleaner and brushes are a
much better way to clean the aluminum parts on your Corvair motor."
> Just before powder coating, what is the "conversion" that Mark L was
talking about just prior to painting the parts?
I don't know. Mark is fairly active on the Corvair list. Ask there.
Collectively they will also have better answers to Corvair-specific
questions.

about just prior to painting the parts? I assume its either some form of
cleaner or an acid etch, correct? Hopefully in a couple of weeks here, I'll
have freshly powder coated parts to show off. From what I can understand of
it, this process has the potential to make me look like I really know what
I'm doing!
Thanks for the help everyone - I'm learning!
Best Regards,
Larry Hursh

I'm assuming you have William Wynne's conversion manual and also subscribe
to the Corvair e-mail list. Just make sure you don't sand-blast the Corvair
block itself.
If you are out looking for a used oven to bake your powder coated parts to
keep from contaminating your kitchen oven then you may have also already
read Mark Langford KR-2/Corvair site. If not go here and search for
"powder":

I'm looking for

Pitot installation location is on page 33 of the old manual. Picture
attached. Hope there isn't a date stamp on it!

Subject: | More Corvair stuff and aviation services available..... |
Howdy folks. For that last couple years I have been working closely with some
people to achieve their goals of flight. Flying around the US and getting to
know many of you has led me to expand a bit more of the parts and services that
I am providing. I am currently working on renewing my CFI for Light Sport
to help with instruction and helping pilots grow in their skills. I also have
also included Prepurchase inspection and Ferry capabilities to the services
I provide. These services will be added to my website (billclapp.com) shortly.
Since much of my time still has to be at home (single dad) I have also increased
my capabilities in servicing corvair engines and helping builders with
their installations. My Corvair services page will show how I can help. New
additions to the page are custom rebuilt distributors, custom exhaust systems
and parts, and my prop hub design that is available. Call or email me for availability
and use. Much of my time is spent in helping individual builders
with their individual needs who have their aiplanes here at my shop so I am limited
with the quantity of service I can provide. However, you think that I
can help you pleas feel free to contact me and I'll be glad to see whether I can
help or direct you to a cource that can fill your needs.
Thank you...Bill Clapp
