We had quite a spring teaser here a couple of weeks ago. last Monday ( Feb 25)
it made it all the way up to 40F, not bad for a NW WI in Feb. The thing is that
on week prior to that it had been -20F, 60 degrees in one week! Its zero right
now, going to make it up to 14F this after noon. I am defiantly ready for
spring

The engine on the site is 52 hp and 105ft-lbs (at) 2750 and 2550rpm. But they state

engine the might be be high enough to look into for a 701.
My question comes about, be cause the site was last updated in 2005 ,they don't
answer the phone and their email bounces. Google searches barley bring up anything.
I know it sound like belly up to me too, but its interesting enough to

Hey Ron, just think of it this way: we're on the downside of winter now. Hopefully,

mowing grass again too! I like your apron by the way.....it's quite "becoming"........(becoming

Be careful with Florida. We get nasty hurricanes that enjoy destroying anything
they found in GA airports.
Orlando is kind of a good compromise, good weather year round and little bit better
protected from hurricanes since it is not right at the coast.

If this was me and nobody even answers the phone, I would never consider using
any of their product. Look at it this way, if you needed parts or service, HOW
are you going to get it? I would look at another source of an engine like a
Corvair, Subaru, Aero V or any of the other engines available.
I'm personally doing the Corvair Conversion for my CH 601 XL. I chose this simply
because it's a conversion I can do myself and it will be an engine I can
maintain. It will help cut the costs considerably from that of a Rotax or Jabiru.
It's just a matter of personal choice I guess. There are a lot of options
out here and you'll just have to decide which one will fit yours needs.

Hi All,
If any of you need your gearbox done under the Rotax recall, I am in Tucson Az.
and based out of Ryan Airfield. No cost to you if you fly in and only shipping
if you send it to me. Shipping is cheap. If you fly in I have a 2.5 hr. turn
around and your on your way. If you ship it I have a 1 day turn around. I am
an authorized and newly certified Rotax service center under their new certification
program with 7 years of Rotax experience. Let me know. I have a number
of gearboxes coming in so let me know so I can make sure I have enough gearboxes
on hand.
By the end of May I will be a full blown one stop shop for all your needs. Inspections,
service (airframe and engine, dynamic prop balancing, ect..) I'm quick
and very thorough. I specialize in LSA's and Rotax 912's, but will do experimental,
too. I have a Flight Design CT myself and have many happy clients.
If you have never had your prop checked for blade pitch you should and I very highly
recommend a dynamic balance as most LSA are out of balance. If you prop
needs adjusting we can do that in short order. Hopefully your WOT rpm is around
5500rpm. You don't see many props from the MFG in balance or that has some time
on it and this can be attributed to a number of reasons. I started doing them
because I found my CT was out and have seen most other LSA's out of balance
and finding someone to do a good dynamic balance is a challange. It is good
to do for the health of your engine and components. If you can feel it in the
stick it is way out and most times you can't feel it at all, but it is still out
of balance.
You can always find me or my articles on the ctflyer.com website or on the Matronics
Rotax engine web site.

A standard 6.00x6 tube is 17x6. Just get the 6.00x6 tube and you are fine. My advise
is to spend the couple of extra dollars and get the Michellin AirStop tubes.
They are butyl, not rubber so they don't leak air like rubber and come with
either straight or 90 degree stems.
The 15x6 is a smaller tube size for a lesser used tire. You can get tubes and tires
very reasonably at Desser Tire or Tires Unlimited online.

Totally understandable Steve. I think every place you go, has it own set of problem
weather patterns. I couldn't handle your high temps. I'd rather put up
with 3 months of snow and have most all the rest of the year at least be bearable.
We do have temps over 100 in late August and September here (South Bend
Indiana area) but it only last for 3-4 weeks usually. The rest of the times
our temps gradually get cooler and then warms back up again during the rest of
the year. I can gage our temps around here and call them "cool, a bit colder,
then warm and sometimes hot". Your temps to me would be "nice, really warmer,
really hot, and then living HELL"..........lol... The nice and warm part I
could handle...not the really hot and the last one...

I'm thinking of going with a 0-200 engine and wanted to know.
What additional bracing or structure is needed when using a heavier
engine. I think some of you guys with the Corvair are about the same
weight. The plans say 195 I think but I know there are alot of installs
out there over this. I really would like to go with an aircraft engine
if possible, even though there are some really good conversions out
there.
I would greatly appreciate any advice

I have also a question regarding this:
What type of O-200 to use? Are there any edition that we should walk away from?
I always imagined going with a Rotax or Jabiru, but that's just going to be too
expensive.

Howdy folks. For that last couple years I have been working closely
with some people to achieve their goals of flight. Flying around the
US and getting to know many of you has led me to expand a bit more of
the parts and services that I am providing. I am currently working on
renewing my CFI for Light Sport to help with instruction and helping
pilots grow in their skills. I also have also included Prepurchase
inspection and Ferry capabilities to the services I provide. These
services will be added to my website (billclapp.com) shortly.
Since much of my time still has to be at home (single dad) I have
also increased my capabilities in servicing corvair engines and helping
builders with their installations. My Corvair services page will show
how I can help. New additions to the page are custom rebuilt
distributors, custom exhaust systems and parts, and my prop hub design
that is available. Call or email me for availability and use. Much of
my time is spent in helping individual builders with their individual
needs who have their aiplanes here at my shop so I am limited with the
quantity of service I can provide. However, you think that I can help
you pleas feel free to contact me and I'll be glad to see whether I can
help or direct you to a cource that can fill your needs.
Thank you...Bill Clapp

The recent discussions about the Corvair engine are very intriguing. I keep watching
the Flywithgus.com 701 test flight video from his site. The setup looks
good, sounds good and seems to fly well. He got off the ground in a very short
distance. To me the Corvair has a lot of potential. Plus, the price is
right.
The one big question is: The designer has designated a certain weight allowance
for the engine in the 701 and the Corvair is clearly over this. How do we reconcile
this fact? In other words, given what the designer has specified, can
the Corvair really be safely used in the 701? What are the issues that have
to be dealt with?
I'm no expert and would appreciate yr thoughts.

Hi JG,
You can run the Rotax 912uls between 5500-5800 rpm for 5 minutes. The 5 minutes
only part should tell you something. If you do not have to run it up over 5500
rpm for a specific reason then why would you want the extra wear and tear. If
you have to have the extra rpm/hp then it's there, but it's much better on the
system if you don't have to. That's why they give you the 5500 max continuous
spec. The majority of people I know use the 5500 rpm for their WOT. With a
ground adjustable prop or a fixed pitch you are trying to get it set for the best
balance of speed, climb, fuel and over all performance as you can. 5500rpm
pretty much meets this need. We're just trying to find a happy median for the
aircraft and engine combination.
I'm not saying you can't run it over 5500, but if you don't need to????
In all of my Rotax classes over the years 5500 WOT has been the benchmark and then
a nice cruise rpm of 4900-5100.

When I wrote Chris a letter about the fact that I WAS using the Corvair
and did I need to hire him or another aero engineer to look over the
front of the 701 for areas of concern, his written reply was "use the
Corvair, no modifications necessary".
It's in the archives. As you state, the weight of the Vair and 0-200
are identical,, if you want to get serious about weight on the certified
engines you might look into the C-90 , same displacement as the 0-200
but a few pounds lighter. Chased all that down a few yrs ago but memory
has faded.

There are a lot of reasons for not updating websites, heck mine has not been updated
for 3 years, OK its a personal/family one, but it is right up my alley...jobs
wise. As for the phone, my best guess is that they are a 1-5 guys place,
maybe out of a garage? As for parts they state that they have used industry standard
car parts for th wear items.
It IS a nice looking little engine, sorta like a continental 65, but new. This
is why I'm looking into it ( in 4 cylinder mode). My big picture still includes
the Raven G13BB, but I'd love an air cooled engine. I still have not ruled out
the Corvair, but it seems that by the time you put a 5th bearing on it, well
it then weighs even more.
I'll try the email trick.
Thanks

If this was me and nobody even answers the phone, I would never
consider using any of their product. Look at it this way, if you needed
parts or service, HOW are you going to get it? I would look at another
source of an engine like a Corvair, Subaru, Aero V or any of the other
engines available.
I'm personally doing the Corvair Conversion for my CH 601 XL. I chose
this simply because it's a conversion I can do myself and it will be an
engine I can maintain. It will help cut the costs considerably from
that of a Rotax or Jabiru. It's just a matter of personal choice I
guess. There are a lot of options out here and you'll just have to
decide which one will fit yours needs.

The engine on the site is 52 hp and 105ft-lbs (at) 2750 and 2550rpm.
But they state that they are working on a 4 cylinder 80 hp version.
Since its a low rpm engine the might be be high enough to look into for
a 701.
My question comes about, be cause the site was last updated in 2005
,they don't answer the phone and their email bounces. Google searches
barley bring up anything. I know it sound like belly up to me too, but
its interesting enough to ask around."

The engine in a car has a mechanical pump. In William Wynne's standard
conversion the mechanical pump is discarded and two specific identical Facet
electric pumps are plumbed in series. Only one pump is powered at a time.
The pump model is chosen such that fuel will flow when the pump is not
powered.
An all-electric fuel system sounds scary but the (dual) points/coil ignition
system used also requires power. But the auto conversions with an ECU
(Subaru I believe) is in the same boat. I believe that William has run tests
that show that if your alternator dies the battery can run the pumps and
ignition for an hour or so.

"Cooperation" may be too strong a word. Zenith knows the specifics of
William's Corvair/XL installation and the weight numbers and thinks it is
feasible. William cares very much what the factory thinks. As far as kit
builders go Zenith strikes me as the most open-minded. Their web site says
this about the 601XL (not the 701):
"While all aircraft are designed within certain power and engine weight
guidelines, Chris Heintz did not design the ZODIAC XL "around" a particular
engine - to maximize the customer's choice of installed powerplant.
Recommended power is 80 to 125 horsepower, up to 300 lbs. installed weight"
http://www.zenithair.com/zodiac/xl/xl-engine.html
This is quite a contrast with (for example) the RV-12 which looks like it
will be hard to adapt to an engine other than the Rotax (a fine but
expensive engine).

"In the above photo you can see the volt meter on the Dynomometer
<http://www.flycorvair.com/thrust.html> with Dr. Ray's engine running at
full power. Notice that it only reads 9.5 volts. This is because we
generally run engines without charging systems on the dyno. After dozens of
starts and hours of running, the voltage drops in the small battery. Because
our Dual Ignition <http://www.flycorvair.com/distributor.html> System is
based on points, it is not troubled by voltage this low. Measurement of the
torque output of the engine shows no effect."
http://www.flycorvair.com/hangar1007.html
"One of the most important aspects of the ignition system is that it's low
voltage tolerant and a low power consumer. There's a lot of theoretically
great electronic systems that work fantastically as long as there's more
than 11.5 volts available and a steady flow of 10 amps to power it. In the
world of flying, where you could have an alternator or voltage regulator
failure, and be reduced to the amount of electrical power stored in your
battery, these electronic systems are not acceptable. A Corvair engine
running one of my ignition systems will run for hours on the battery that
started it. The points system will work all the way down to the 9 volt
range. Electronic ignitions with computers on other alternative engines have
demonstrated as little as 20 minutes flight time with very serious
consequences after a charging system failure."
It is true that this doesn't factor in the electrical consumption of the
fuel pumps. On a 601XL (unless you want to buy the 601HD header tank I have
lying around) gravity feed isn't an option. For a 601XL Corvair I would lean
towards a larger battery than in (say) a Jabiru configuration.

Actually I'm recalling a test on a test stand on the ground where the
alternator was deliberately disconnected and the engine allowed to run till
it died. I'll see if I can find the entry on William's web site.

Craig - you are partially correct. We did have an airplane have an
emergency landing due to low battery voltage and the pumps shut down and
engine quit. That is why I like the gravity feed system. If you have the
sual pumps then insure that you have a constant 12v to run the system. Call
me for more info. 229-506 7741 Bill

Howdy folks. For that last couple years I have been working closely with
some people to achieve their goals of flight. Flying around the US and
getting to know many of you has led me to expand a bit more of the parts and
services that I am providing. I am currently working on renewing my CFI for
Light Sport to help with instruction and helping pilots grow in their
skills. I also have also included Prepurchase inspection and Ferry
capabilities to the services I provide. These services will be added to my
website (billclapp.com <http://billclapp.com/> ) shortly.
Since much of my time still has to be at home (single dad) I have also
increased my capabilities in servicing corvair engines and helping builders
with their installations. My Corvair services
<http://billclapp.com/corvairs.html> page will show how I can help. New
additions to the page are custom rebuilt distributors, custom exhaust
systems and parts, and my prop hub design that is available. Call or email
me for availability and use. Much of my time is spent in helping individual
builders with their individual needs who have their aiplanes here at my shop
so I am limited with the quantity of service I can provide. However, you
think that I can help you pleas feel free to contact me and I'll be glad to
see whether I can help or direct you to a cource that can fill your needs.
Thank you...Bill Clapp

I'm still a bit unsure about this engine loading... I've always set up
by the book for 5800 WOT, and cruise at around 5000. If the prop is
pitched for 5500 WOT then I can maintain the same cruise speed with
lower rpm. But of course the same cruise speed requires the same power
output, so the engine is running at a higher torque to produce that same
output. Nothing is for free here.....
5500 for max continuous only applies if WOT is 5800.
If WOT is 5500 then what should max continuous be??
For the same % of full power, that would be maybe 5200?? In which case
cruising at 5100 is getting pretty near max continuous..... I'm not
wanting to run anywhere near max continuous.
I know some who do prefer to pitch up courser so that they are able to
cruise at lower rpm, but thought that this was not advisable....
So do the Rotax classes indicate that it's preferable to set up for 5500
rather than 5800 WOT??

Hi JG,
You can run the Rotax 912uls between 5500-5800 rpm for 5 minutes. The
5 minutes only part should tell you something. If you do not have to run
it up over 5500 rpm for a specific reason then why would you want the
extra wear and tear. If you have to have the extra rpm/hp then it's
there, but it's much better on the system if you don't have to. That's
why they give you the 5500 max continuous spec. The majority of people I
know use the 5500 rpm for their WOT. With a ground adjustable prop or a
fixed pitch you are trying to get it set for the best balance of speed,
climb, fuel and over all performance as you can. 5500rpm pretty much
meets this need. We're just trying to find a happy median for the
aircraft and engine combination.
I'm not saying you can't run it over 5500, but if you don't need
to????
In all of my Rotax classes over the years 5500 WOT has been the
benchmark and then a nice cruise rpm of 4900-5100.

If you're not needing a bigger engine, the one I would want is the Aero-Conversions "Aero-V". Its a brand new conversion motor that YOU assemble. They supply all the parts and a video to follow along with. It's an 80 HP motor, brand new and the cost is $6495. This is the engine that the Sonex builders use. It weighs full complete at 161 pounds. Here is their website if you or anyone else is interested: http://www.aeroconversions.com/aero_vee_2002.html
If I was building a 701 and didn't need the extra power, this is the one I would
build....

Hans,
You might want to consider doing a WW Corvair Conversion. The cost will be about 1/3 that of a new Rotax or Jabiru (if not more) and it will be an engine you can maintain yourself. William Wynne is out of Orange Park Florida and has been helping quite a huge movement of builders to convert the Corvair engine into a 100 HP air cooled, 6 cylinder engine. He does offer to build an engine up for you if you don't want to do it yourself. Here is his website: www.flycorvair.com

I always imagined going with a Rotax or Jabiru, but that's just going to be too
expensive.

Larry,
FYI, William Wynne no longer builds engines for sale. I think that Kevin Fahy
(of the former WW "Hanger Gang") now offers that function. The only way I know
to contact him is through Gus Warren (flywithgus.com).

Thanks for the info, but I am build the 701 for its unique ability's, otherwise
I'd have built a Rans S7. I did initially look at it, but it does not develop
enough thrust, I really like the carb. And the redrive VWs run pretty high engine
RPMs to get the power. Great Planes had a water cooled engine, but it seems
to have disappeared.
There really is a huge hole in the market for this engine. [/i]

Subject: | Re: Gearbox recall |
Hi JG,
Just so you understand. 5800rpm is the max rpm for that engine anytime, period,
regardless of prop pitch. Everything is then figured from there. 5500 WOT is
the max continuous rpm anytime, period, regardless of prop pitch. These numbers
do not depend on the prop pitch, but are absolute per the engine specs. So no
matter what the prop pitch is set to 5800 is the absolute max and 5500 can be
run all day if you wanted to.
If you set the prop pitch to achieve 5500rpm WOT (wide open throttle) when flying
straight and level then you are good to go. With ground adjustable or fixed
pitched props we try to achieve a balance of our flight characteristics and engine
performance verses wear and tear.
Balance is the key here.
If you have your prop set to achieve 5800 rpm you will have killer climb, but suffer
in the fuel economy and cruise speed. At the 5800 prop pitch setting you
will have to fly higher rpms and more throttle (fuel) to keep the speed you want
because the prop pitch is set too flat. If you fly high altitude let's say
over 7k' all the time then you will be able to develop a little more rpm and
hp at high altitudes with a prop pitch set for 5800 verses 5500 WOT. If you have
your prop set for 5500 WOT then you will still climb well, but you can now
cruise at 5000rpm at a faster speed and at a reduced throttle setting which equates
into better fuel economy.
You can go the other way and have the prop pitch set for 5100 WOT and have poor
performance balance and you are lugging this engine, it is over propped. It was
set to run and is happier at 4800-5200 rpm cruise at with a WOT of 5500.
The manual gives the 912's low and high specs, but does a poor job of where it
should be set to be happy for its life span. They do teach these things in the
Rotax classes. While we are on the subject of rpm settings the idle setting for
the 912uls should be at 1800 give or take a few rpm. The 912 80hp only has
a 9:1 compression while our 912ULS engines are 10.5:1 and this higher rpm cause
real wear and tear at low idle rpms. It is better to also warm your engine up
at 2000-2400 rpm. It runs smoother there and while it warms up has less vibration
and gearbox wear. At this idle rpm setting you are not loading the engine
enough just sitting there to be of concern. Right out of the Rotax classes.
