Just slightly butting in here but,,
I had a Rotax years ago. Got rid of the thing before anything happened and
thats a totally different story. I had the three to one (C) gear box and
the RPMs were in the 7200 to 7800 range. I pushed the engine hard because
of the aerobatic preformances that I was involved in...
Anyway, I dont get the 5800 max RPM statement. If its 5800 and your using
a 3/1 isnt that 1933 0n the prop ?
1933 doesnt seem to be efficient with most aircraft propellers.....
Educamate me please..

The Raven's Suzuki is being flown on a 701 with great performance and
it's lighter than most of the others.
I don't see any engine that matches the weight/power etc, especially in
water cooled engines.

Rick Roberts 701 page describes an extremely well done engine. He has a
youtube video with sound
of the 701 in flight etc. Definitely worth a serious look. This engine
is one of the best alternatives to the
expensive Rotax engines and lighter than most others. Water cooled
engines sound better and
generally cost less to run and maintain. For a 701 this is a good choice.

Dear fellow 601 Builders/Flyers, I may be hijacking this, but is anyone familiar
with some posts a couple years ago involving adjusting ailerons down a bit??
I seem to remember several flyers were experimenting with drooping them a tad
for better control or performance or some reason. Who out there did this and
what was the results? For the last year since I stretched my cables in a crosswind
balloon landing my XL seems more "twitchy" in climb to TOC. Maybe the ailerons
are too high or too tightly adjusted? Hope to hear from some builder/flyers.

Bill, are you sure you stretched your cables? As I recall, they have
about a 900 pounds-plus capability, which ought to bend structure before
breaking. Doesn't seem like a nasty landing ought to do that.

Good to know we have another engine man around. Thanks.
I have been struggling a little with this 5500WOT business but then I
struggle with most everything anymore. I setup my 701/912ULS like JG-for
5800 WOT, straight and level(I figure that's where it makes about 100
horses and since I paid for them I like to use them...or at least be
able to get to them if I need/want to) for maximim takeoff /climb
performance and minimum idle thrust, and I use firewall power for all
takeoffs and initial climb, honoring the 5 minute limit. I generally
cruise at 5000 rpm as you recommended. Since setting the prop for 5800
WOT s/l I have done some airframe cleanup and the thing will blow right
thru the very low airframe redline before getting wound out to 5800. I
have thought about putting some more pitch in the prop to slow the motor
down but the plane is already running too fast unless powered way down
which is my question for you...at what rpm should we consider the engine
to be lugged down?
Your premise of "balance"(compromise) I agree is normally what we strive
for. The 701 however is such a unique little beast that in my thinking
it doesn't really apply, as it would to a 601, for instance. I wouldn't
want to give up any short field capability for the sake of balance(or
engine life-as long as it'e operated IAW the manual) cause that's what
the 701 is all about.

Hi All,
I'm getting ready to order the 3003 aluminum tube for my fuel system in
the fuselage and have a question. I'm planning to leave the 1/4" ID
zenith supplied fuel line in the wings and then have an adapter at the
wing root to the aluminum tubing in the fuse.
I was planning to order 1/4" tubing but it seems like several folks
have gone with the 3/8" tubing. Why go with the 3/8" instead of the 1/4"
? Is it the thicker wall size of the tubing ?
If I go with the 3/8" al tubing then what have folks done for the
connection to the rubber tubing as I can only find AN807 fittings that
go from 1/4" hose to -4 or 3/8" hose to -6 size fittings it seems like I
would need the -6 fittings but with a 1/4" ID hose fitting and I don't
see those listed at aircraft spruce or wicks ?

Steve, I have a 912UL: Rotax Operator's Manual says 5800 RPM Red Line
for 5 minutes max at takeoff. 5500 max. continuous cruise. Gearbox is
2.273:1 or 5800 engine RPM equals 2552 prop RPM and 5500 engine RPM
equals 2420 prop RPM. (I have a 68" 2 blade electric in-flight
adjustable Ivoprop.)

John, I am kind of in a similar spot as you. I am
going to go with the 3/8 line right from the tanks to
the front of the firewall. At this point I need to
switch over to 1/4 hose to go to the Piersburg pump on
my 80 hp Rotax.
So far all I have been able to come up with is a
double male flared fitting to adapt hard pipe down
from 3/8 to 1/4. I might have to use a small section
of hard pipe on the front side of the firewall and
then switch over to flex line. This is not ideal.
Anyone have any better suggestions?

Bill, On my 601HDS, I placed a dial type level on top of the top
longeron on the side of the cockpit. I originally found I was flying 2
degrees nose high at level normal cruise. I started drooping both
ailerons a 1/2 turn at a time. ( I thought I had them neutral, eyeball
of course) At zero on the level, I picked up _4 MPH_ at cruise. At
negative angles, I again lost speed. I did not detect any change on
control sensitivity at any setting.

Don't get me wrong the Raven G13BB is an awesome engine, I have traded emails with
Rick, who seems tickled with it.
What I can't get, is an all up with accessories and extra FI and water cooling
paraphernalia weight for the Raven. Ricks plane is pretty heavy, but he is unsure
of the exact weight of his various parts. ( no offense Rick, love that plane
of yours, but I am wanting as much useful load as I can get. I have to admit
that it is a miserly engine with the gas consumption though). I also don't
care much for the idea of high pressure gas lines and return lines. I have the
system all drawn out, but I'd rather have a simple carb and gravity/low pressure
fuel pump, and air cooling. I just like air-cooled engines.
I guess its a nostalgia thing, and or the KISS approach.

It is with deep shock that I announce that we have lost our first Zenith Zodiac
XL with both Pilot and passenger.
It only happened yesterday afternoon. The pilot was Garry Sweetnam, the Australian
Zenith XL Distributer and he was on a VFR flight when it plunged into the
ocean off the Goldcoast of Queensland. There were 20 people on the beach who witnessed
this.
Garry was my friend he was also a LAME and the plane was built in the hanger along
side other pipers and cessna's that were being worked on. So this was not
a backyard outfit.
The plane was VH reg so the Civil Aviation people here (FAA) will investigate and
give reports. Garry loved the XL and sang its praises so much he became a distributer.
Happy Sky's my friend. Garry left behind a wife and kids.

I have been worrying this same item for the past couple of weeks.
I decided that I liked Joe Motis' suggestion (on ch601.org) of putting the
electric boost pump(s) in the wing(s), so I started working on that. The
nose ribs are different in my wing than in Joe's, so I had to redo the pump
channel. I had a few false starts before I came to a satisfactory solution.
Then I had to ponder the fuel lines. I wanted to use aluminum from the pump
to the firewall, but I couldn't see an efficient way to disconnect the fuel
line at the wing root in the event I needed to remove a wing. I considered
a rubber hose for the segment from the pump to the wing root. But I have
decided, instead, to make a ~2"x3" cutout in the fuselage wall with a cover
plate attached by screws and nut plates. Then, I'll put an AN833-6D 3/8"
tube x tube bulkhead ell through the cover plate. That way, I can break the
fuel line inside the fuselage and, by removing the screws to the nutplates
from the fuselage side, I can disconnect the fuel line and the wing from
the fuselage.
I was discussing this all with Clayton, my EAA technical counselor, and he
suggested that I also put the gascolator inside the wing. That is
apparently what he did with at least one of his RVs. I liked the idea. I
have never liked Zenith's design of the gascolator sticking out the bottom
of the fuselage. Back to the drawing board. There were significant problems
in designing a system that was maintainable. I've gone through my design
process in fair detail on my Kitlog Pro website (see URL below). Check out
the entries for the past week or two that relate to the fuel system.
Meanwhile, back to the tube diameter question. Bingelis' in Firewall
Forward, p. 146, says, "Fuel lines -- 3/8-inch x 0.035-inch for aircraft
engines (normally)." That was good enough for me. Also, my tech counselor
asked me the horsepower of my engine. I said 120 Hp. He said 3/8" aluminum.
I didn't ask why, since that was what I had already planned on--based on
Bingelis' book. Did I mention that, in addition to being a pilot and RV
builder, Clayton is an A&P, retired after a long career with the MT
National Guard.
When you get to the firewall all you need is a 3/8" tube x 1/4" or 1/8" NPT
bulkhead ell. Then screw a 1/4" or 1/8" NPT x hose adapter into that and
attach the hose and fire barrier.
Clayton was also worried about how I would implement the tank select valve
and pump power switch. My thought is, first of all, to have a pump and
gascolator in each wing. Then I plan to put a single pole-double
throw-center off switch immediately above the valve handle. So, valve left,
left tank. Switch left, left boost pump. And vice versa. And center for all
off.
I just ordered all the fittings, etc., from Wicks, with the exception of
the extra gascolator. I'll get that from Zenith.
All this plumbing is not cheap. Think 200 or 300 bucks. Is the peace of
mind worth the bucks and the extra 2 lbs of fuel system hardware? That's
obviously an individual decision. I suspect most 601 builders would judge
me crazy. But at least my tech counselor liked my direction. And, if it all
works OK, I'll be happy.

Hey guys: Can anyone tell me What the correct parts are to replace the
distributor caps and rotors on my Jabiru 3300? I think the proper parts might
involve a 1970's car, but I am not sure. I know the proper Jabiru part numbers
are PG 0190N (rotor) and PG 0180N for the cap. but I do not know what the *GB74
and *BH73 stand for.

Sportcruisers (LSA) dus Experimental in Europa. Gaat een beetje lopen, maar
CAW is er niet al te best aan toe. Jorgen zit nu in Tsjechie om te zien of

I have an 801 I just completed in December. The 4 seat belts have the
601/701 model number on the tags but it came with my 801 kit. They seem
to be too short for the front seats & that's before any upholstory is
in. I am sitting on 2" thick foam with 1" foam against my back. They
are ok for the rear seats.
Are there supposed to be seat belts specifically for the 801 for the
front seats?
Mine measure from the center of the bolt hole of the rear attach to the
end of the first metallic buckle at 805 mm.
I asked Zenith about this on Feb 1 & then agon about a week ;ater but
still waiting for a response.

Like you I am going to use the 1/4" line from the tanks to the fuselage
then go with 3/8" Al inside the cabin, and after the gascolator, which is
mounted in the engine compartment (on the firewall), go with 3/8" tubing
to the Rotax fuel pump.
My reasons for 3/8" are:
1. reduced (significantly) friction losses in the line which means lower
pressure drop from the tank to the pump so less chance of vapor lock
2. 3/8" is much stiffer then 1/4" so a more robust system
3. My last kit (Ultravia Pelican PL) used 3/8" from tank to engine (same
engine) and it just seems like a good idea to me to do the same on the XL.
I am using Swagelok Al fittings for all connections. We used Swagelok
fittings exclusively at the Nuclear Plant where I worked (good
reputation).
The Swagelok fittings come in any size combinations youn can imagine
including from 1/4 inch rubber to 3/8" Al. You can Google Swagelok to get
your nearest distributor.

The yearly renewal of my 601 HD insurance is now due and was stunned to
see my insurance premium jump over 30% this year.
When I asked my agent from SkySmith (underwriter is AIG) why my rate
climbed so much for this year I was shocked to hear their answer. I've
just converted over to flying as a Sport Pilot with my HD and they tell
me THAT is the reason my rates skyrocketed (see they explanation below).
" I have been unable to receive a quote from any other companies as they
will not provide coverage to pilots
flying in the Sport Category."
Apparently no one wants to insure Sport Pilots, and those that will see
a huge profit to be made with this new classification.
Has anyone else found this to be the case, and if so has anyone found a
reasonable Sport Pilot friendly company to insure with?

today.

Have you gotten a quote through the EAA's program?
There was a podcast about insurance for LSA on avweb on Feb 1st. It talks
about LSA but I don't know if they factored in Sport Pilot. FWIW here is the

Subject: | Dynon's OAT sensor |
Mine is mounted in the rearmost upper bulkhead. It is under the fiberglass
"saddle" between the aft end of the turtle deck and the rudder for
protection from the direct sun but outside of the airframe.

Did anybody mount their Dynon OAT sensor in the right wing? If so where?
If not, where did you mount the OAT sensor?

I have found that EAA and AOPA "programs" are no special advantage because they
are still agents that buy insurance on the open market from the same underwriters.
Avemco is different, and I find them much easier to deal with.

3003 tubing is sized by its outside diameter. I would not go with
anything less than 1/4" ID for any fuel supply lines. That means the
smallest 3003 line I would use is 3/8" OD tubing. The smaller the
tubing, the more restriction to flow and the more risk of vapor lock.
I used 3/8" aluminum tubing from the wing tanks to my fuel valves,
which had 1/4" female NPT ports using an AN 816-6D fitting. I did not
like the idea of needing to replace the rubber lines inside the wing
at some future date. The fuel line is one continuous piece from the
tank to the valve and passes through a grommet in the fuselage wall. I
used the rubber fuel lines from my fuel valves to the engine, these
lines are easier to access for replacement.

I mounted mine in the lower right wing skin, behind the main spar, as far
from the fuselage as was convenient for my arm to reach thru the flanged
holes of the ribs. I works fine here.

601/701 model number on the tags but it came with my 801 kit. They seem
to be too short for the front seats & that's before any upholstory is
in. I am sitting on 2" thick foam with 1" foam against my back. They
are ok for the rear seats.
Are there supposed to be seat belts specifically for the 801 for the
front seats?
Mine measure from the center of the bolt hole of the rear attach to the
end of the first metallic buckle at 805 mm.
I asked Zenith about this on Feb 1 & then agon about a week ;ater but
still waiting for a response.
