Subject: | Re: canopy for 601XL? |
I looked into using an RV style canopy, but they are not compatible due to the
way
the 601 narrows towards the front. I had Todd at www.toddscanopies.com custom build a
longer and slightly higher canopy for me. It can be viewed on his website. It will
install
with the stock hardware, but I designed my own system with rear opening cantilever
hinges
so I could have a separate windshield. I'm not flying yet but hope to be this year.

Has anyone done any further exploration of canopy options such as this...?

I'm out.
I'm wondering just what is the expected result of this analysis.
There are two possibilities, the design is found to be sound, in
which case money has been spent to feel good. Or the design is found
to be deficient. In this case you can't expect he consultant to
redesign the wing, which would be a whole other level of effort and a
lot more money, not to mention liability issues for the engineer.
Regarding the static testing: The purpose of a test is to gather
information. That can best be done in a very controlled environment
and static testing is the most controlled you can get. All sorts of
structures are tested this way from bridge models to sky scrappers.
It's not perfect, but most things in life aren't. Perhaps more
information could have been gained thought testing to destruction,
but it's not really necessary in this case sense he design loads were
met.
I'm with Larry on this, work with ZAC. Build a wing and do the
destructive test yourself in whatever failure mode you are concerned
about.

Knowing there's a problem - or not, as is entirely possible - is half the
battle. If nothing else, if there is a problem, then we can, hopefully, get
Zenith/Zenair to fix it.

If it's a problem that only appears under certain conditions you can't
achieve in static testing, though, you'll never find it.
Aircraft have more ways to go wrong than bridges or skyscrapers, too.
I'm not saying that there is a problem. I just want to know for sure.

Peter, we have all been there at one time or another. Part of the fun and challenge
of homebuilding is how we deal with our screw-ups. I guarantee if you go
to a gathering like Oshkosh and look around you will not find a cosmetically
perfect plane. Perhaps it is a good thing that this happened early so that you
can get beyond it... like getting the first scratch on a new car :-)
Me, I'd fill the hole with spot putty or the like. If it makes you feel better
you can add an additional rivet to either side between the correct rivet and
it's intended neighbors. Structural integrity will not be compromised.
I agree that having a fast drill is important. I use a Sioux 3500 rpm palm drill
(air) which works great. It is also important to use sharp 135 split point
drill bits because they tend to hold their center and not wander. I know some
of the guys sharpen them but my advice is when the bit starts to get dull, toss
it and put in a new one. In the Yard store catalog #40 bits are only $0.70
each

This is my real interest in this. I can accept the inherent dangers in flying,
but no chance in taking any more risks than is necessary. If you can double check
this on the ground, why not. Be like assuming you have enough fuel on board
or the oil level is topped off. That's just stuff you check. If you experienced
an odd engine vibration on your last, you probably wouldn't just forget about
it and go ut flying the next day. You also check this out if it seems something
is amiss. Nothing chicken-hearted here at all.

Looks like you have gotten some good advice.=C2- If you decide to fill tha
t small hole with a
solid flush rivet, I might suggest that you not drill that hole through the
rib
flange since that would compound the problem of having holes too close
together.=C2- Rather, I would slightly
countersink the underside of the skin and install the rivet with the bucked
side out.=C2- After assembly, you can file
the bucked side flush with the skin and it becomes just a metal plug.=C2-
I have done this a time or two.

There are critical and non-critical stressed skin components. If it makes you
feel better, run your photo past Zenith. Attached is an example of where a mistake
should not be repaired as shown--the rear spar attach. This is where the
forward and rear skins meet, by adding a fourth layer of material for only part
of the joint, a stress point is created where the forward skin must stretch
over the patch and rejoin the rear skin. The builder has placed this "stress"
point just above the rear spar attach point. Not a good idea according to
the engineer who sent this photo to me.

Actually I received the file "3-View-TD.dwg" (217 KB) just fine. I get my
messages as individual e-mail messages.
But at this point I will make my usual pitch for using the Matronics "photo
and file share". Attachments don't get archived. So any files of lasting
value should be submitted to be shared. It is easy: just e-mail them to Matt
at the right address with some information:
(from http://www.matronics.com/photoshare/)
"If you wish to submit a Photo and File Share of your own, please include
the following information along with your email message and files:
1) Email List or Lists that they are related to:
2) Your Full Name:
3) Your Email Address:
4) One line Subject description:
5) Multi-line, multi-paragraph description of topic:
6) One-line Description of each photo or file:
Email pictures and files along with the information above to:
pictures@matronics.com
Please note that the adding of your files to the Photo and File Share
Directory is a semi-manual process and will take a few days to become
available. A message will be posted to the Email List(s) you indicated in #1
above with a link to the new Photo and File Share when it is available."

That brings up something I wanted to try and track. How many hours total
there are currently on modern Corvair conversions. I would suspect WW has the
most hours on them but I would like to make a list and total up the hours of all
combined.

Well the Yellow 601 on the web site _www.aeroliteproducts.com_
(http://www.aeroliteproducts.com) took to the air Thursday and made a flawless 30 Min
flight up to 3,000 feet and I am happy to report the new oil cooler, oil filter
adaptor and Alternator preformed as expected.
The plane flew straight and level and no (Tweaks) were needed. It flew again
today for 30 min's.
This was my second builders assist and Pat loves his new bird.

Can somebody tell me how to access these files? I looked all over the "Forums"
and can't figure out where these Zenith .dwg pictures are. Maybe I don't understand
how all of this stuff works. Or can they just be posted on here?

Subject: | Re: CorvAircraft> 200 Hour Milestone |
Congrats Mark on the 200 hrs. It sure is a lot of fun to take your kids up.
Caution on taking up the neighbor kids. I had one throw up spagetti on a flight...Yugh!
But such is the joy of flying. 41768 currently has 575 flight
hours on it, and about 370 on a nitrided crankshaft. I have about 630 hours in
various corvair aircraft from KRs to 601s. I am sure that Mark Langford is
at the 600 hour mark on his plane. I know that Gus had lots of corvair hours
since he did all the flying for WW. I know that WW is still woking on getting
his pilots license so that he too can join the ranks. Dave Goodman has over
100 hours on his KR, Steve Makish over 300, Bob Lester had a couple hundred,
Dan Weesman has about 100 I believe. Dont forget Joe Horton, Pete Bradigan and
more. I venture to guess that there are more KR/Corvair hours than 601/corvair
hours but since Peitenpols have been flying for years they may still be
king of the hill. I hope for many thousand of
safe flying hours to come.
