Hi Ron,
I assume you are talking about the pics on my web pages. I just had a
look at the pics and agree its perhaps a bit difficult to make out how
it fits together. So I'll try and describe it. Please remember my A/C is
a 601HDS, I don't have any drawings of the XL but I assume its similar.
1. The servo fits in a tray between a doubler and the rear spar
immediately behind the pilots seat. This is seen in the second last picture.
2. The control rod from the servo heads towards the centre of the A/C
and its bolted to the steel piece that is welded to the end of the
torque tube for the aileron cable attachment. It is bolted between the
aileron connection (above the aileron pick-up) and the actual torque
tube proper. This is shown in the fourth and fifth last pictures. The
steel piece I am talking about is painted black.
There is no connection onto the actual aileron cables, only the torque
tube. There is absolutely no slop in the system.

the only thing that would cause me to question the hingeless hinge is if the hinge
protion were made from a heavier gage than designed. The forces climb and
the fatigue capacity goes down.
Great, this is just the kind of info I was hoping would show up.

Since we are talking about autopilots. I just noticed that Dynon has announced
the AP add-on for there line of EFIS.
At the low end of the line you can have a single servo unit for just $750

Now that sounds interesting. I've been wondering why this hasn't
happened in the past. I'm sort of surprised that the Enigma didn't get
there first with it's everything in one approach.
I'm a software engineer by profession and I've been thinking it would be
fun to write an AP, but I'm completely clueless about hardware
interfaces. No time while building anyway.

Hi Sabrina;
I did not forget your request - I just have not had the time to search adequately
for a useful response.
The Thorp T-18 and the Volksplane II both used antiservo tabs on the pitch control.
I have a set of VPII drawings somewhere but the tab is strictly anti-servo
and not combined trim and atni-servo. I believe that the T-18 was coupled.
The basic concept for coupling is that the sati servo is geared diagonally by
a horn from one face of the tab to the reference base on the other face of the
stabilizer of fuselage such that when the elevator/stabilator moves nose down/trailing
edge up, the tab is driven even further tin the same direction of deflection
thus providing a counter force attempting to drive the control surface
back towards zero deflection. To add trim tp this concept, the fixed reference
base for the tab pushrod is made movable so the the centering bias is affected.

Per the PILOTS HANDBOOK of Aeronautical Knowledge 2003, an antiservo tab moves
in the same direction as the trailing edge of the stabilator. The antiservo tab
also functions as a trim tab to relieve control pressures and helps maintain
the stabilator in the desired position.
There are computer modeling simulations for that application, but not for what
you are dreaming up, as far as I can find.

You know CATIA V5R18 does amazing things, you should try it. I had all the time
in the world the last 6 days (spring break) and NOW you want me to do it when
things get busy... :o Maybe sometime in June....
First gusty take offs and landings today for the Sabrina Mark 1... finally got
the Garmin to talk to the Dynon (firmware update)... and finally got the P
lead fed Dynon RPM to stabilize at idle. (200+ K in resistance versus the 30K
supplied by Dynon) (flown by test pilot/new owner, not me yet)
You guys are going to be credited with helping me come the August 2008 EAA Sport
Aviation issue (the credit I gave you in the March 2008 issue, page 91, did
not make it past the cutting room floor, so to speak.) (I did mention you guys
on the PBS video.) N5886Q is the airplane you all helped build.
Thanks again for everything... remember, there is no way Zenith would let a
12 year old kid start building their aircraft and continue supporting her if
they thought the sky was falling in around them... CH would let his grandkids
fly in the Sabrina, I am told. That alone should calm many fears about the wing
design. (I reminded the IA who rebuilt my C150's engine that I was going
to take my friend, his daughter, up in the airplane one day, that is the best
insurance one could ask for.)
