      Hi Bob and all,

the tanks on the CH601.org pictures are most likely products from a company called
      AERO SERVICE Poland
      http://www.aero-service.com/contact_us.html

These tanks are made for HD wings only. I asked them for a quote and they said
they would also be able to do custom made stuff.

prices seem quite similar in Euro to what ZAC asks in US$

      I fly a 701 overweight and am registered at 1320# with a 30" wingspan.
I've talked to Chris about this on more than one occasion. (The Spar was
made stronger at initial construction) , His answer is a good one answer
      and is as follows:

You can do that but you need to de-rate the "G" factor accordingly-- IE
if you fly 20% overweight, then the "G" factor would be reduced by 20%
+6 would become +4.8 and -3 would become -2.4. Of course this is the
Ultimate rating and safe flying would be 2/3 of these ratings or +3.6
instead of +4 and -1.8 instead of -2.
Check out the Sonex "G" ratings at gross.

In other words don't do anything dumb at the overweight condition.
I have not yet taken up a passenger, More testing to do.

Does anybody know why the accident does not show up preliminary in the NTSB database?

I know (e.g. in Germany) that accidents with ultralight aircraft sometimes are
not covered by the official accident investigation office.

      List,

A non-aviation-related post. Delete before reading.

AT&T Labs has a demo site where you can type in text, choose a "voice" for readback,
and hear the result of your efforts.

Called "text-to-speech" in some circles, this is the process used by the U.S. National
Weather Service for automated weather on their NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts.

One of their transmitter techs told me they refer to the "voice" as "Igor".....he
has some difficulty with proper pronounciation of various placenames (cities,
towns, etc). Therefore they trick the conversion process by typing the text
version "phoenetically" for the benefit of Igor.

      http://public.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php

You can also download/save the voice file, rename it, etc, put it on your cellphone
      ringer.
Has other languages, but don't know if it will read English and then speak French,
      etc.

Fun to send gag greetings to your email friends.
You have to "experiment" with numerals....it will pronounce the telephone number
      555-1212 as "five hundred fifty-five hyphen one-thousand two-hundred twelve"......definitely
NOT what you may have intended. Works better with spaces between
      numerals, in this case.
An example of bad reading by Igor is the placename of Mexia, Texas. Igor says
      "MEX-e-ah".....the correct useage is "Maa-hay-ah".....phonics.

Not sure if you can sent the voice-file as an attachment to this List.
Wonder if Igor can say "Green ScotchBrite Pads"???

      Regards,

      Zed

It usually takes a while before it makes it to the NTSB database. It does already
show in the FAA database here.

Some interesting details that weren't reported in the press.

Congratulations, Linc! Way to go, welcome to the flying Zenvair club!

Fuel system venting OK? The only I ask is that inadequate tank venting bites a
large proportion of builders during first flights.

I have some 701 landing gear components for sale including the main
gear spring and a complete nose wheel assembly. These items are in
      excellent condition.

Not included are main wheels and brakes and master cylinders. Also
      bungee is not included.

I believe the new value from Zenith would be $984.00

Sure does, doesn't it. I never looked at the home page link. The entire page must
be generated nightly because there is no significant links to outside sites
      on the page.

Maybe someone who would like to host such a page for Zenith aircraft could contact
the webmaster and borrow the guts of the generator.

For the record, Darryl first posted on this list in June 1996, one
of the earliest subscribers, as the list had only been started in May 1996.

Back when there weren't all sorts of builders' websites out there, he
had written a document on his building experiences. There were only a
couple other documents available from builders at the time (Klaus T.
and George Pinneo come to mind). Darryl's building experiences were
the first I'd seen, so it was an important download when I was
starting to help my dad build his 601.

So Darryl, thanks, and I hope you've had some fun along the way!.

The ice has melted here in Wisconsin. So the "Odd Duck" is flying again. This winter I modified my brake linkage a lot like the photos shown on this link. http://www.ch601.org/resources/brake_mod/brake_mod.htm

The results are incredible! Before I stayed away from airports unless I really
needed to land at one. Did not need the brakes on the water! With free castering
nose wheels a pilot needs good brakes to steer. The original linkage with
the Matco cylinders was adequate at best on wheel gear.......poor- with the
amphibious floats. Now I can steer and stop with confidence. Love the info I
      pick up on this site...Thanks

| Subject: | 601XL - Wing Attach Uprights - 2 Questions |

What has worked well for others when match-drilling the holes in the Center Spar
through the Wing Attach Uprights? I want to avoid enlarging the center spar
bolt holes, while still drilling the holes in the Wing Attach Uprights as accurately
      as I can.

Has anyone added gussets at the top end of the Wing Attach Uprights similar to
the gussets on the main landing gear uprights? It seems to me that gussets here
would be a lot more solid than simply riveting the Wing Attach Uprights to
      the .025 fuselage skin.

      Thanks,

      Ladies and Gents,
Sun n Fun was great, made new friends and
      re-acquainted with old ones.

Thank you Pat Panzera for displaying my cut away
engine in your booth, and thank you William Wynne for
      introducing me during your forums.

The real reason for this post is to thank Larry
Macfarland of macsmachine.com for a fine bicycle
design. Ron Lendon built Larrys design from plans and
he and I drove to Sun n Fun together, with the bike in
      Ron's van.

For those folks unfamiliar, Larry calls his design the
"light sport recumbent". All I can say is that it is a
blast to ride and it certainly turns heads.

I knew nothing about recumbent bikes until last week.
Apparently what makes Larry's design unique is that it
has a short wheelbase and has front and rear
suspension, there are probably a few other trick
things that I failed to notice because I was having
      way to much fun.

I had to re-train my thinker a bit but once I got
going it was like riding........ a bike! I practiced
figure eights in front of the campsite and when Ron
signed me off I was solo and conquering terrain.

I have to have me one of these someday, maybe sooner
than later with the price of gas and having a bike
trail nearby that leads near my work 15 miles away.

Ron can testify to the satisfaction of building
Larry's design and I can testify for the sheer
enjoyment of riding the end result.

      Best wishes to all,
      Roy, CH701 plans, Corvair ect.

The photo guide shows two ways of marking the holes without enlarging those in
      the center spar attachment.

Paul Mulwitz used gussets in that area... perhaps he will chime it and share some
      photos.

But it is in the photo guide for 6-B-14, not 6-B-13 where you would expect
it. Basically use a 5/16th transfer punch or drill guide bushing through the
spar to one upright at a time.

The photo guide shows two ways of marking the holes without enlarging those
      in the center spar attachment.

Paul Mulwitz used gussets in that area... perhaps he will chime it and share
      some photos.

I took a bolt of the same size and ground a point on it to act as a punch
and with the spar alignment tool in about a quarter of an inch for the first
holes it worked better than any thing I have seen tried yet. After you make
your marks then just take it to the drill press and drill them to size.
As far as the gussets go I make sure they touch the upper longerons and
don't worry much about them touching the bottom because they each get 2 bolts

      thru them.

I hover on the list a lot, but don't generally say much... but wanted to
let everyone know that a new zenith was flying.

I haven't done that but the way you describe should work just fine. If you are
real careful, and just take the heads off, you can most likely use A4's again.
