I'm currently wiring my panel (601 XL), and temporarily
connected my elevator trim switch and indicator to the servo to check
operation before making final connections. I tested with a 9 volt radio
battery as suggested in the instructions. The results were different
than expected. I wired the servo leads so that pushing the top of the
rocker will raise the nose by lowering the trim tab. This results in the
indicator needle dropping below center. The indicator is showing the
position of the tab rather than the resultant position of the elevator.
This seems backwards to me. What is correct?

I bought mine from Sears. It is a vertical one with the compresson on top,
runs on 115 VAC and maintains about 100 pounds of pressure. I think it has
a 20 to 30 gallon tank. Got it on sale for a bit under $200.

Would probably be easiest to simply swap the indicator leads to reverse the
direction the meter moves. Not recommended that you mount the meter upside
down.

Hello Mike:
Small, direct drive compressors tend to be very LOUD; belt drive turn slower
and are somewhat quieter. For many builders this is an important concern.
Any compressor will be adequate for the rivet puller. Take a good look at
the CFM demands of the other two tools and get the MOST EFFICENT tools (lowest
CFM at rated RPM) you can afford - especially the drill. The cutoff tool is
nice but, in my opinion, as a kit builder, rarely used. ( Comes in handy
for cutting off an old muffler off the old Buick though !)
That drill will be in your hands a lot - get a good one.
I am using a belt-drive 230 VAC compressor delivering 120 PSI regulated down
to 65 PSI for a drill and 45 PSI for the riveter. I can't give you a CFM
rating because all the specs are metric (it's a salvaged Japanese oilless
piston-type compressor) but I can tell you it will drive an ARO 1/4" air drill
(
my most efficient)continuously. The other two 'junk' drills are air hogs and
I use them for opening up pilot holes to #30 and #20 holes - always drill a
#40 pilot hole !!! An in-line oiler is a good investment as well providing
you are not using those lines for an air spray gun.
Email if you have questions - Happy Building

Mike,
I bought a Kobalt air compressor from the local Lowes. It's 30 gal, 5 HP (peak)
1.6 HP (running), and delivers 5.3 SCFM@90psi or 6.2 SCFM@40psi with a max pressure
of 155 psi. It even has a "Made in USA" sticker on it. The pump is cast
iron and uses oil so it's pretty quiet. I paid about $350. It has never
tripped the 15 amp circuit (knock on wood...) and handles drills, nibblers, etc
with no trouble. But, I've only done my elevator so far and don't have many
hours of use yet.
Just checked the Lowes web site and could not find the compressor but I'm certain
I saw it on the shelf when I was in the store about 1 month ago. Check this
RV builder for a review and pictures:
http://www.nippaero.com/compressor.php
There is a similar model made by Husky sold at Home Depot for about the same cost
- that unit (or was it the Husky 60 gal?) comes highly recommended from the
Van's crowd.

Ben

Please. What is good about the reports from NTSB is they are efficient.
If they need to be more in detail, they are. The NTSB reports produced are
fine. We are all just pissed that they have'nt found the determining factor
in a few Zenith accidents.
Or are we pissed that the NTSB has not found the results of the accidents we want?

I bought mine at Sears also..
The one I got is a 33 gal that was returned never
used. I was able to talk them into knocking $200 off
the price. Works great, although it is pretty noisy.

Subject: | Re: Help With Air Compressor Selection |
When I started building my airplane, I used a 5 gallon "pancake" compressor that
I already had. It ran all the time, and after a while it would get very hot.
And it was LOUD!
It was just too small for anything that I could use it for, so I threw it out before
it started a fire or blew up or something...
So I bought a good one from Sears: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00919541000P?vName=Tools&keyword=compressor
Much quieter, greater capacity, ordinary 110 volt current, and still portable.
I'm happy with it, and I'd buy the same one again.

Check out craigslist. I got a 45 gallon Kobalt vertical compressor for $250, I
LOVE IT. I have used the craftsmtan oilless and they work and from my experiences
seem to be durable ( Though I have heard reports to the contrary). I am
personally a fan of the belt drive "oiled" compressors since they are quieter
and run at a less annoying frequency (much deeper in pitch). I can run my compressor
at night with my wife asleep and I cant even hear it in our bedroom this
is a BIG plus. She sleeps, I work on the plane, it all works out..... Seriously
though, take the noise into consideration. I had to run a 30 (220 Volt)
amp circuit, but hey... I'm building my own plane so running another cirucuit
isn't a big deal

Subject: | Rivet Stem jam in riveter??? |
Hey everyone, I finally got my rudder ready for riveting and was pulling rivets
when my Zenith pneumatic riveter jammed! It jammed on the first A5 I pulled
after changing heads from the A4's. The stem broke fine from the rivet but it
logged in the clamps inside the riveter. After many attempts to pull it out
it snapped and I now have about a 1/4 ' piece of it jammed in the clamps. I have
been unsuccessful in my attempts to remove the black nose piece from the green
face as well. Please help me, I am extremely frusterated and don't want
to do something stupid like run my semi riveted rudder through a saw! On a side
note the plans allow for a tolerance of .3mm rivet head spacing how might one
measure this I have 2 rivets in question that I can see light through one side
when looking at it slightly. It looks tiny but then again .3mm is in fact
tiny.

Subject: | Re: Rivet Stem jam in riveter??? |
Andrew,
I'm not familiar with the riveter that ZAC sells but I have had stems jam up before
- On mine you add a little air tool oil in the air hose inlet before you
use it, and that helps prevent jams. You might try holding the trigger in (with
the air connected) while pointing the nose down and tapping the back with
a piece of wood or mallet to see if the stem drops out. You might also try pushing
it out with another rivet. Surely one of the guys with a ZAC riveter will
jump in with better advice.
If you can actually see daylight around a installed rivet then the rivet needs
to be replaced with a larger size. The hole must be filled (when the rivet is
pulled) and flush to the surface. If you see daylight around a rivet that you
haven't pulled and are curious as to whether the hole is the proper size, check
the Construction Standards and see what the maximum hole size is for the thickness
of aluminum you are riveting and get a drill bit that is equal or slightly
smaller than that size. If the stem of the bit won't go in the hole then
you should be OK. If you want more info contact me off list and I'll dig out
my book and tell you what I use.
BTW - A high speed drill does a better job on aluminum than your typical rechargeable
model. I use a 3600 rpm air drill. In addition, get aircraft grade 135
split point bits and throw them away when they get dull. They make a clean
hole and tend to start without wandering off the mark.

Andrew--
It sounds like your rivet gun needs a drop of oil in it. First, however,
you'll need to remove the piece of broken rivet stem. You will probably ne
ed to disassemble the gun. At the back end of the gun(oppisite end from whe
re the rivet is pulled) you should be able to unscrew the parts of the rive
ting head. Once these parts are removed it should relieve the pressure on t
he gripping heads and the stem piece should be removed. Add a few drops of
light oil as you reassemble the gun and allshould be well. Periodiaclly add
a drop of oil and you should be able to avoid any more jams.

lling rivets when my Zenith pneumatic riveter jammed! It jammed on the firs
t A5 I pulled after changing heads from the A4's. The stem broke fine from
the rivet but it logged in the clamps inside the riveter. After many attemp
ts to pull it out it snapped and I now have about a 1/4 ' piece of it jamme
d in the clamps. I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to remove the blac
k nose piece from the green face as well. Please help me, I am extremely fr
usterated and don't want to do something stupid like run my semi riveted ru
dder through a saw! On a side note the plans allow for a tolerance of .3mm
rivet head spacing how might one measure this I have 2 rivets in question t
hat I can see light through one side when looking at it slightly. It looks
tiny but then again .3mm is in fact tiny.> > yours truely,> perplexed> > [L

Let me clarify the rivet spacing statement because I just re read it and it is
a bit confusing. The edge of the rivet head does fill the hole completely, it
is only when looking from the side and checking to see the rivet head flush against
the aluminum that I see a very minute gap only on one side of the rivet
between the aluminum and the rivet head. It looks like the rivet gun head may
have not quite 90 degrees to the aluminum. I'm not sure there even .3mm but
I don't know how to measure that small. Thanks for the suggestions I will give
em a try and let you know.
Thanks,

Well, that will be Spanish tax Euros. In any case, I'm not pissed at the NTSB not
finding the reason for these accidents, in time they will find it, whatever
the reason is, since this thinks keeps happening.
As to their 26 pages report, they are not the only one, the Brits and the Aussies
produce very similar accidents reports. The irony is that they do it beside
having lower salaries and working less hours than their American NTSB counterparts.
So it is not because they pay more taxes.
But never mind that their reports are more thorough than our NTSB ones, ours have
to be better because.... well its ours.

SO the Spanish tax dollars are spent making a 26 page report that reults in a conclusion,
plane stalled, then fell out of the sky. What is it about the report,
all the fun read or the fact that their reporting is 26 pages of micro analysis?
Lets stick to apples and apples. the VANS RV4 was pretty cut and dry. The Zenith
ones are'nt.

>Gig, that is a preliminary report. If you are looking for consolation for NTSB's
anemic reports you are looking in the wrong place. how useless are their final
reports? well judge for yourself, here is the final report of an RV4 accident.

Subject: | Help with Harbor Freight riveter? |
I just purchased a Central Pneumatic brand air/hydraulic riveter,
#93458, from Harbor Freight. According to the instructions, it needs to
be serviced with hydraulic fluid before use. The same instructions
explain how to removed the bottom cover and add the fluid.
BUT, I am completely unable to get the bottom cover off, even after
using some PB Blaster and my 1/2" breaker bar on the 15/16" hex part
provided. Does anyone know if there is some trick to this? I can see
any locking pin or similar problem in the drawing.
Is there a different way to add the fluid? Any other ideas?
Thanks,

Hi Andy
I have the same tool, and, for me, the instructions were not very helpful.
I used it without a proper priming for a year before I got it working
right. Now, it's great.
The cylinder cap for the pneumatic cylinder is sealed with an O-ring, and
does not need to be very tight. I am able to loosen mine with the supplied
spanner, with a counterclockwise turn. Once you remove the cylinder cap and
the piston assembly, the important thing (I now realize ;-) ) is to fill
the central cylinder of the handle with oil (I used pneumatic oil from
Lowes). I misunderstood the instructions and thought they were talking
about filling the top of the pneumatic cylinder with oil, up to the top of
the "frame." So I failed to fill the cylinder in the handle. As a result
the rivet gun required 2 or 3 cycles to pop a rivet. Now, with the proper
oil fill, it pops on the first pull. Ah, wisdom. Once it's properly
primmed, I believe that just putting 4 or 5 drops of oil into the air inlet
a the start of a work session will keep the oil level up. It's a good tool.
The instructions were not very helpful.
I don't know what to advise if the spanner will not loosen the cylinder
cap. Mine comes off easily.

I got a riveter from harbor freight 5 years ago, and have pulled 20,000 rivets
with very few problems. Did not add any oil, except a few drops in the air hole
every once in a while. Perhaps they have changed, but why not try it as is?????...................Fred.........N9701.....N9601......Ca
