Subject: | Re: Rivet Stem jam in riveter??? |
Hi Andrew,
I have found many rivets that I installed with the head not perfectly
tight against the sheet metal. One standard I use to decide whether
to drill the rivet out is to try to slide a piece of paper under the
head of the rivet. If the paper goes under the head and reaches the
stem of the rivet then I drill it out and install another one.
I also made some riveter heads with large flat areas that contact the
sheet metal instead of the narrow ones commonly shipped with the
riveters. This large area helps position the riveter perpendicular
to the sheet metal. It also makes it difficult to install rivets
close to obstacles, so you can't use it all the time. I know this
sounds like a lot of effort, but I think it is worth it to make the
riveting process a little smoother since there are A LOT of RIVETS to
install in an airplane.

Subject: | XL fuselage bulkhead CAD plot files |
Good morning!
I'm going to be making up my fuselage bulkheads and instrument panel in the next
few days, but before I break out my trusty pencil and ruler, does anyone happen
to have CAD plots for the form blocks they wouldn't mind sharing? A PDF
file would be even better.
There are a few sources for wing rib plots, but fuselage bulkhead form blocks
seem to be a little harder to come by.
OK group. Thanks in advance.

Andy,
I had the same problem. I did not follow the instructions and only oiled the
air inlet. Seems to work ok.
The first one did not work though and I sent it back.

BUT, I am completely unable to get the bottom cover off, even after

Oh ,Andy I reread your post .Do nothing about adding oil before the
first use .These instructions should not be there ,the gun is ready for
use right out of the box.You can tell when oil is needed by how bad the
riveter is pulling the rivets .Again ready for use out of the box ,no
need for priming .The only oil you need to add is a few drops into the
air inlet before each use .

Subject: | Re: Help With Air Compressor Selection |
That looks like an updated version of my 30+ year old Sears that is still going
strong. I would highly recommend anyone else looking for a new compressor to
consider this one. The huge vertical tank units are overkill and lack of portability
is a limitation. Small compressors are really meant only for nail guns,
are noisy and do not last. One warning however. Do not use extension cords, buy
longer air hose instead. Also, consider wiring it for 240 volts. I used mine
in an old house with 60 amp service and fuses. I needed to convert the garage
fuse to a "fusetron" slow-blow type because of high starting current.

When I started building my airplane, I used a 5 gallon "pancake" compressor that
I already had. It ran all the time, and after a while it would get very hot.
And it was LOUD!
It was just too small for anything that I could use it for, so I threw it out before
it started a fire or blew up or something...
So I bought a good one from Sears: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00919541000P?vName=Tools&keyword=compressor
Much quieter, greater capacity, ordinary 110 volt current, and still portable.
I'm happy with it, and I'd buy the same one again.

Since engine is at TBO, we are seeking another engine from "0" time

Harbor Freight rivet gun maintenance .... Whazzat???
I've been using mine for two planes now .... I always assumed
maintenance was replacing it when it quit working ... Mine still hasn't
quit. Despite drop testing it, etc.
Ok, I do occasionally drop some oil in the air inlet.

Mine wouldn't come off ether. I used a vice and a large pipe wrench. When I got
it open, it had oil in it already! Well now it looks like I took a pipe wrench
to an aluminum cover! Try it, if it works use it. If you want put oil in the
air inlet, just to be sure of lubrication

Please provide links to Zenith Quarterly. THe plans show nothing on control surface
balancing. I'm extremely interested in this. This sounds exactly like what's
going on. I wouldn't say this is monday morning quarterbacking at all. This
is an age old problem, and one that's probably being overlooked by the new throngs

problem is. Thanks Gus!

FLutter and airleron balance has been covered in previous articles
in the Zenith quarterly Magazine. There are plans and schematics to place balance
rods on ailerons. Stick to the plans! If yu tension the cable correctly
there should be no issue with flutter.

Subject: | Compound curve at rear of outside canopy flashing? |
I'm working on the minefield which is the XL canopy. My current
problem/question is how to wrap the outside flashing around the last bit of
the canopy's curve. On the steel canopy frame supplied with my QBK the plate
the latch is welded to doesn't curve in from bottom to top to follow the
curve of the canopy. It isn't even flat - it curves out (two pictures
attached). The lip is most pronounced along the upper edge of the plate
between the rear of the actual latch mechanism and the tube that the rear
canopy bow inserts into.
So the flashing has to curve around this lip AND curve around to meet the
rear of the canopy. Unless I buy an English wheel and develop a new skill
quickly I don't see how to do this. I see a few possible fixes:
- grind/cut off the worst of the lip while still leaving enough of the plate
intact to support the bow.
- stop the flashing at the tube and use a second piece between the tube and
the rear edge of the canopy
- use a hammer to stretch the flashing around the lip.
I suspect I may have to use a combination of these ideas.

Craig,
If the material is 6061-T6 you can anneal it by heating it to 600 degrees and quenching
it in cold water. The material becomes very soft and will harden back
up with age. The part you refer to is not structural in that it is not weight
bearing and this methodology should work for making the metal easier to move
and relocate to the desired shape.
A welding supply house has TEMPERATURE INDICATING STICKS (tempilstick), get the
one you need (600f) and heat the metal slowly with an acetylene torch and using
the stick you mark the metal, when the temperature is met the stick makes
a wet dark mark on the metal, that is when you dunk it in the cold water.
Try some small test pieces first and get the feel of how it works. You should
work the metal immediately and will discover that the very next day it is quite
hard to move again.
No wheel training necessary.

So I went out to the airport today to get my biannual done on a beautiful spring
day (75/Sunny) in Aurora, IL and stumbled on to a little more than I expected.
While preflighting our clubs Cherokee 140 and rehearsing maneuvers in my head
(it's been 1 year since I last flew) I happened to glance across from me on
the east ramp and 25 ft away was this Zodiac 601XL. Does anyone know the owners???
Are they regulars on this board??? Anyway the Bi annual went great (the
only part I was rusty on was ADF navigation, that's right it has a functiong
ADF, go figure for an air traffic controller to be rusty navigating). Anyway
I had no idea anyone lived within even 50 miles of where I fly let alone was
based at the same airport so it was quite a surprise. If anyone has any info
I would appreciate it!!! Thanks

I just found this advisory on this ultralight website:

other than Jabiru engines. Does anyone have any more recent

ULTRALIGHT AIRCRAFT AIRWORTHINESS NOTICE-AIRWORTHINESS NOTICE
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER 1- 2001 Issue 2
WARP DRIVE PROPELLERS =EF=BD DIRECT DRIVE APPLICATIONS HUB CRACKING
(JABIRU ENGINE FITMENT IN PARTICULAR)
To:
Owners/Operators of all AUF Aircraft fitted direct drive engines
employing Warp Drive Propellers
Background:
The AUF has been advised by Thruster UK of cracking found in 6 hubs
and in the aluminium roots of two blades of Warp Drive propellers of
aircraft fitted with Jabiru engines.
Initially, Thruster in the UK raised a Mandatory Service Bulletin No
TAS/SB07 requiring that All Thruster aircraft fitted with Jabiru
2200A engines be visually checked before each flight and that they
should not be flown with that propeller if any cracking is found. The
matter was referred to The UK CAA who issued a Mandatory directive
requiring compliance with the Thruster UK Bulletin.
The latest advice (and reason for issue 2) is that the UK CAA has now
grounded all Jabiru/Warp Drive Vision aircraft until approved
corrective action has been incorporated because all cracks are not
visible to the unaided eye, their detection requiring non-destructive
techniques.
As at 19 Oct, the final solution is understood to be a replacement
hub based on the hub for O-200 Engines.
Because this appears to be an engine/propeller combination problem,
the AUF considers that all aircraft fitted with a Jabiru/Warp Drive
combination should be inspected. The problem reported by Thruster UK
is on 2 bladed propellers fitted to Jabiru Engines only, but a one
off inspection of two or three bladed warp drive propellers fitted to
other direct drive engines would appear to be prudent also. Records
show there are 4 Visions, a Carlson Sparrow and a Zenair STOL fitted
with the Warp Drive/Jabiru combination.
Note that the Jabiru Engine is only supported by the manufacturer
when fitted propellers manufactured by Jabiru itself.
Action Required:
Effective 19 October, upon receipt of this notice:
A. On aircraft fitted with Jabiru Engines incorporating Warp Drive
Propellers:
1. Propellers with a total time of 50 hours or more are to be
removed from service and are not to be reused without engineering
