airplane is just fine and it always happens to someone else.
Even though the plans I bought show +6 and _6 "G"s I don't think there are
any problems now that the designer has changed the -"G"s to -3 and reccomended
a limit to the elevator - travel which may be a problem if your CG is not quite
perfect.
Get the picture??? Think about it!!!!
This designer needs to step up to the plate and let those of us that are building

1. I'm not an aeronautical engineer, but I read alot about crashes in other types
of high speed, pressurized airplanes built 30 to fifty years ago and interpolate
from that to this airplane.
2. I change the thickness of the metal in one or more parts of the airplane without
consideration of the distribution of the stress loads to other parts of the
airplane.
3. I add doublers to various parts of the airframe also without structural
analysis.
4. I buy materials for construction, sometimes from foreign countries to save a
buck- without getting certifications that the materials meet the standards.
5. I change the materials from 6061 to 2024 or some other alloy without getting
information as to the appropriateness of that alloy in that part being verified.
6. I don't care what the airplane is designed for- I'm going to " yank and bank"
because I could have done what Chuck Yeager did if only I had the chance. My
only flight time was in a 152.
7. My medical expired 7-8 years ago.
8. My plane hasn't been finished although I've been working on it for 5+ years.
I just keep on making changes to make it better and keep me from ever having
to actually fly it.
9. I'm sure I "know" more than the designer, who is fat or lazy or incompetent
and is trying to hide his mistakes by refusing to help in the accident investigation
and nothing, including the facts is going to dissuade me from that
knowledge. Plus, I called them once and they didn't get back to me within 30

10. I'm sure the FAA and NTSB are fat, lazy and incompetent and really don't care

11. I intend to make significant changes to the control surfaces based on a book
I partially read once.
12. I never intend to go back and check the torque on bolts or cable tensions once
the airplane is completed.
13. Despite all this, I fully intend to blame the designer for any incident that

Double Check your charging circuit. The voltages are too low to maintain
your battery. Anything above 1100 rpm should read in the 13.0 - 14.2 range
depending on what you have turned on. (Assuming a JD Dynamo
) The numbers you show are what I would expect if your were running on
battery only. You might see 12.2 at slow idle.

on doing this? That is a) will I wish I'd added them if I didn't, or b) will
I wish I didn't add them, if I did?</DIV>

I am trying to install my firewall which includes drilling the holes for the
upper and lower engine mounting bolts.
the contruction manual calls for 5/16" holes but the bolts that were
provided by ZAC are actually 3/8"
Additionally the manual shows the mounting bolts welded to the mounts but
mine are loose.
Has anybody else found this to be true? Would I be OK to go the larger bolts
without untoward problems>???

Zenith has changed the mounts at least three times. In the last two
incarnations (integrated canopy pivot, triangular "BRS" mount) the bolts
have been separate so you can select the right bolts for a plate mount
(Jabiru) or a mount with spools (Corvair and others). If your mount will
have spools you will need to choose the bolt diameter that matches the
spools. What engine mount do you have?

Brad,
My drawings (08/05) show 3/8" bolts and 3/8" holes.
I installed the bolts that came with the kit. When I decided to go with a Corvair
engine, I discovered that the engine mount calls for much longer bolts. If
the original ones had been welded in place, I would have been a world of hurt.
I think they welded the bolts in place on the prototype for fear that they
would be too hard to hold when torquing the nuts. They are hard, but not impossible
to hold. Been there, done that.
Some say to hold off drilling the holes until you have your mount. I drilled them
where the drawings show and they worked out just fine.

Yes, you will be sorry if you don't add the wing stiffeners and bracing on the
sides too. If you don't the sides they will oil can, especially while sitting
on the runway while warming up with a quartering wind. Fellow pilots will give
you a hard time about it as they can see and hear it. I added my side bracing
later and will say, it's not easy getting in there to do it latter.
I don't care how careful you are skinning the wings with the 16thousands aluminum
it will buckle some between the normal ribs while sitting sitting on the runway,
especially with the sun shining on them. I put an L angle lengthwise on
the top and bottom of the ribs in my wings midway between the main and rear spar
and it works well. I called Nick H. and he said that is fine. It was much
easier that way as I didn't have to contour the L angles to the curvature of the
wing. Many planes have something similar and it is normally called a hat section.
Titan aircraft do it that way.

Subject: | Re: engine mounts |
Hi Brad,
I had a similar problem on my XL. It seems the fittings for the
longerons to firewall to engine mount had been changed from the time
my prints were done until the time I ordered the fuselage kit. The
change impacts not only the firewall attachment but also the hinge
for the canopy rail.
I didn't check with ZAC, but I am confident the larger bolts will be
just fine for the engine mount attachment. I figured out how to
drill the holes myself and even added a shim or two under the side of
the bolt head so I could tighten the nut from the engine compartment
side without holding the bolt head steady. I enlarged the holes to
final size after the longerons were in position against the firewall.
Good luck,
Paul

Buy the Canyon Surfing DVD, when you watch it you can hear the oil canning. And
there are wing cam shots of the fuselage, you can see it beating.

Subject: Zenith-List: Matco`s Wheel Bearings
As per previous report in archives Rays Matco Chinese wheel bearings have
also failed 1998/1999 Kit suggest if you have Matco wheels pre 2000 you
check the wheels run smoothly & if not fit a reputable make of bearing.
G CBDG CH601 HD Continental 0-200 170 Hrs
I received Matco wheels with my Gears and Wheels component kit. The wheels
are Model W80CC-Z Size 8 Weight 8.0 with a maximum Static Load Capability of
660 Pounds. Mine were made in May of 1999. At the time, Matco was owned by
an owner preparing to sell the company. I believe it was sold in 2000 to
the current owner(s). I checked the bearings in mine and sure enough one of
them was rough operating. I put off replacing them for a couple years, but
recently I bought 6 bearings to replace the bearings in all three wheels.
The bearing size is 1623DCTN in the NICE brand Inch Ball Bearings. Motion
Industries did suggest substituting Chinese made bearings number 1623RS.
These are INCH bearings meaning that the size is measured on the English
scale, not metric. While it was easy to remove the old bearings with
pressure from the opposite side, I found that simply pushing the new
bearings into place was not successful. An A&P on my field got the bearings
into the first wheel using heat on the wheel and a large drill press to push
the bearing in place, but it was not an easy task. He grimaced and
struggled with the drill press. I tried a homemade press using a threaded
rod, flat washers, and nuts to try to compress the bearings into place
without luck. The coarse threads on the only rod I could find were not a
help. Even with heat on the wheel to expand it, when I finally got the
bearing in place, it was damaged. Today I found the magic! Even though the
aluminum wheel should expand at a much greater rate than the steel bearing,
the answer was to freeze the bearing. Today was hot so the wheel was warm
from sitting in the car. The cold bearing from the freezer slipped into the
warm wheel with just a little persuasion from a wooden dowel and soft blows
from a hammer. Both bearings went in within just a few minutes. Tomorrow
the plane can stand on its tires again.
Thanks to Rick Herndon, Clive Richards, and several others not on this email
list.
I may be the last one to need to address these old wheels, but hopefully
this will tell the story for others.

I own two 601XL kits and a nearly done 701. I need time and space to finish
the 701. So the QBK is on the block with optional components like the new
Jabiru 3300, Jabiru USA FWF kit and Skyshop leather seats and interior. Take
a look.
