| Subject: | Zenith 601HD parts |

      Hi All,

For a number of personal reasons, I am selling my Zenith 601HD (completed in
1997, last flown in June 2006). Sale has absolutely nothing to do with
recent list chatter (this is an HD, not an XL). If anyone is interested in
acquiring a relatively complete (but non-flying) airplane or parts thereof
(wings, rudder, horizontal stab, gear, brakes or other parts), let me know
very soon...otherwise it'll go for metal scrap.

A list of various items I have for sale is available at:
http://users.wcvt.com/perkins/N1170Q.htm Specific photos are available upon
request. The entire list is available for $9k, as a NON-FLYING plane for
parts...data plate removed. Make an offer on any or all of it. On Monday I
start pulling it apart and listing things on EBay.

I also have a Rotax 912UL (80hp) with ~250 hrs on it. My instructor had a
landing incident resulting in a minor prop strike in June 2006. The plastic
insert of the GSC wood prop was knocked out, but the engine kept running
until I shut it down. Although several sources said it was unlikely there
was any damage, I had the engine torn down by a certified Rotax shop to
inspect the gearbox (no problems) and flange runout (in spec). Had the Bing
carbs serviced at the same time. It has been reinstalled on the plane and
run briefly since the incident and seems to operate fine. Asking $6,500
(firm) for engine, or $7,000 for engine/FWF/engine instruments (VDO).

There was scattered damage to the plane from the incident (mostly wingtip
and landing gear), nearly all of it has been repaired.

Buyers of large items will need to arrange pickup in Vermont. I'll ship
      smaller items for cost.

Email me OFF-LIST at vtootm@accessvt.com or call me at 802-434-4738 (leave a
message). Don't reply to the list as I only subscribe to the digest version
and only read it occasionally, and to avoid list clutter.

I'm more than happy with William's commentary on the 601XL. Granted, I generally
work on my plane in the winter when I have more downtime, and this past winter
I still got a lot done on it, but that nagging doubt about the design was in
the back of my mind while working on other parts instead of the wings themselves
while waiting for some sort of answer as to if there is or isn't an issue
with the design. Makes me feel a lot better about closing up the right wing now
and moving on to the left wing.

His explanation of rule of thumb on stall speed vs. manuevering speed was good.
You figure this thing can easily go 50% beyond a manuvering speed of 105 mph,
in level flight no less. The manuevering speed in this plane is roughly the same
as a Cessna 152, yet cruise speed in the 152 is about 110mph (95kts), yet
the 152 couldn't very easily be pushed much beyond that anyway without doing something
that would seem outright extreme, like going into a dive. The XL, all
you have to do is go from 65% power to 80% power and you're well over manuevering
      speed.

WILLY'S ARTICLE IS RIGHT ON THE MONEY. I SAID IT WAY BACK WHEN ON CAUTIONING MANAUVERING
SPEED VERSUS VNE, ITS NOT THE PLANE ITS THE PILOT, AND WITH THE WRITING
BY A MORE QUALIFIED EXPERT LIKE WILLIAM, IT PUT SOME TEETH TO THE STATEMENT.
THANKS WILLIAM FOR THE VERY GOOD ARTICLE.

I sought out WW and had a one-on-one, face-to-face conversation with him at Brodhead

As a First Time Builder, what really scared the bejeebers out of me was that I
heard that he'd sold his XL, and I was wondering "does he know something that
I don't?". That's why I talked to him. It sounds like some other builders talked
to him at SnF this year about the same thing.

Glad he did this. For every builder out there who is speaking up and asking questions,
there's probably another hundred who are just watching and listening.

I'm forging ahead with my XL project.....

Yeah, I'm glad he did it too. I trust his opinion and methodologies. Someone knowledgable
with credentials like his had to address this openly already. I enjoy
working on my plane when I have the time. The past year's been kind of up in
the air watching and waiting too much to make it as enjoyable as I'd like. Makes
me look forward to getting back to work on the thing.

I would like to say thanks to William for his perspective. I'm not sure where I
fit in, as far as type of builder, but I am a very inexperienced pilot--actually
I'm not a pilot, I just fly with friends. My experience level does not afford
me the luxury of shrugging off comments that may be obviously erroneous to
a more experienced person. I appreciate those who are more experienced than myself
offering a well tempered dose of learnin'.

      Hi!

      I have a piece of 6061-t6 0.090". I bent it ~20degrees in a brake, at least 3t
bend radius. The metal slipped in the brake while bending so I hammered it almost
flat with a few whacks of the 4# hammer. I then rebent it ~1" away. Will the
flatenning of the original bend case it to work harden enough to weaken it?
This is on one of two pieces of 090 that sandwich a 3.5# piece of lead for the
aileron counterweight. The other piece of 090 is fine.

      Thanks!

something that I don't?". That's why I talked to him. It sounds
like some other builders talked to him at SnF this year about the same thing.

Glad he did this. For every builder out there who is speaking up and asking
questions, there's probably another hundred who are just watching and
      listening.

I'm forging ahead with my XL project.....

Back in May of 2007 Bill posted this after someone else broke a switch:

"I just ran into the problem described below. After doing some research, I

discovered that Honeywell has replaced the discontinued micro switch V3L-3

with micro switch V3-1 and roller leaf assembly JV-5. I purchased them

online at www.gopherelectronics.com for $18.41 each plus shipping ($8.31 for

      V3-1 and $10.10 for JV-5).

Here is a link to the data sheet:

One of the micro switches on my flap actuator needs replaced. It is not
working at all. The insides rattle when you shake it. It has a part number
of VL3-3. It comes up as a Honeywell part, but I can not find one for the
life of me. Anyone had to buy one and where did you get it. Everything I
find says that it is an "obsolete" item.

      Hello Kevin:

When I was beginning my training  I was VERY lucky to have an "Old Timer"
instructor,  from them, we students receive the better and easy to
      follow advise:

Most of them I remember once in while,  but this are always in my mind
when flying (Hope I translate correct, yes they were in Spanish):

Understand (or Ask)  everything you do while flying.
Never get into something you are not trained to do.
Never stop learning about flying in your life.
Always practice as much as you can.

To boys or girls pilots to be, He said that your airplane is like your best
girl (boy) friend: Listen, be Firm but gentle and with loving care and will
      keep faithfull.
Airplanes are not jealous (you can fly other airplanes :-), But If you
loose control badly, will not leave you or divorce, but might
      kill you without mercy.

      Saludos
      Gary Gower.

I would like to say thanks to William for his perspective. I'm not sure
where I fit in, as far as type of builder, but I am a very inexperienced
pilot--actually I'm not a pilot, I just fly with friends. My experience
level does not afford me the luxury of shrugging off comments that may be
obviously erroneous to a more experienced person. I appreciate those who are
more experienced than myself offering a well tempered dose of learnin'.
