There is a better and well balanced article in the March/April issue of
      Zenair News.

It has less of the self puffery than Williams article

      Larry,

I recently had to replace one of these and I got it from ZAC ($118!). I had a
technical question, so I talked with Bob Green at APPH Wichita, Inc., phone 316-295-2502.
      They are the manufacturers.

      Hi Roger,

Sorry I was so incomprehensible on the phone last night. Had been sleeping
for about 30 minutes when you called.

There is one guy looking at the whole plane, so you are 2nd in line for the
radio/tray, T&B, VCC, sunshade and eyeball vents. Other guy has to let me
know by Monday morning. He's from Texas, so probably a long-shot on his
taking it.but he asked first. Long line of people wanting the engine.

Probably looking at $200 for radio/tray (worked great)

Turn & Bank $50 (older model, but runs well)

      VCC $50

Sunshade $50 (a little faded from sun, but still a necessity for 601
      drivers)

Eyeball vents (these are very nice metal vents) $75

I have a warning about getting a cheapo dial caliper from Harbor Freight or Enco..
I bought one (I think it was from Enco) and it measures in hundredths, not
thousandths of an inch. What a piece of junk! The brand was General.
Personally I like the digital ones.

Flew 4 kids for the young eagles program today. Took the time to make some observations.

Trim- with two people, plane trims out neutral on aileron trim.
On final- trim plane at 1700 rpm, 80 mph, 20 degrees flaps, yeilds 400 ft/min decent.
      like clockwork.
over the numbers with full flaps make it 1200 rpm, and 65 mph.
      Greatday over all.

After first posting the question I had to make a trip into town
before seeing any responses. Stopped at an Ace hardware coming back
and picked up a cheap 6" dial caliper. It apparently was the right
choice according to most recommendations. It does what I need it for
well enough, though it is cheaply made. It is also a General brand
but measures in thousands (though maybe only accurate to hundreds).
I also liked the disc style sheet and wire gage Raymond recommended
and will probably get one. I should have had one of these tools
years ago when doing electrical, plumbing and even carpentry. I
intend to invest in a higher quality dial or digital caliper for more
      exacting jobs.
Thanks to all the listers who posted suggestions and their own
      experiences. All good advice.

      fellow builder dudes;

Flew the 601 on a 500 mile business trip, hitting various locations to visi
t clients. First leg was St. Petersburg to Opalocka airport, to visit my
dad's factory and help some inner city kids build a 601 project through Ba
rington Irvings' program at George T. Baker in Miami INternational. cruise
d at 7500 ft at 140mph TAS. burning 4.5 gal per hour.

Next day due to afternoon showers, got up early and flew at 1500 over the b
eaches to visit a client in Melbourne. Melbourne is home of the Joint Star
s program. and the airport just won the Embraer 145 essembly contract. Aft
er breakfast in the airprot I took off to the north and was handed off to P
atrick AFB, to go to KTIX(titusville NASA). You could see the rockets on t
he launch pads to the east and flew at 105 mph to TIX to visit a great avia
tion museum they have on the north side of the field. Took a great tour of
their Grumman Avenger they are rebuilding and an A-6 Intruder.

Next stop Orlando International airport. Before departing TIX, i received
departure instructions and a squak code on the transponder. Cleared for a
west bound departure and handed off the Orlando control, a settled in at 3
000 ft. (500 below the clouds) at 110 Knots. I was cleared into Class B an
d instructed to overfly airfield at 3000 ft and enter right down wind for r
unway 18R on the Macguire AFB side of Orlando INTl. After crossing overt f
ield and began a 1000pm decent. "427JV you are cleared to land, number tw
o behind the 747. entering base, i watched to where the 747 touched down an
d aimed for 1000 feet past him to avert the heavy vortex it generates. I l
anded and switched to ground on .8. tied down and took a shower at Galaxy
Aviation. Needless to say everyone came out to check out the home built t
hat just landed and parked next to a private 737. Got to love it. Put on m
y suite and tie and got a ride to the Hyatt for a round of meetings with cl
ients and state legislators to discuss Florida's wonderfull Insurance envir
onment(wink, wink). dinner was up at 8-45pm, and took off home infront of
      a 757 and behind a 767. Night5 flying in a 601 is needless to say, the Bes
      t. flew home from Orlando to KSPG in 35 minutes.

A great general aviation trip burning less gas than traveling in a car. An
d I was able to hit more locations on a given day. Who said LSA planes wer
e for just around the patch! From a work stand point you cannot beat 5 gal
lons per hour in this high fuel cost environment.
